Products Solutions Services CompEx training From the process safety experts

1 CompEx Training The process safety experts Endress+Hauser is a global leader in measurement instrumentation, services and solutions for industrial process engineering. We provide sensors, instruments, systems and services for level, flow, pressure, temperature and analytical measurement as well as devices for data acquisition. We work closely with a range of industries including petrochemical, oil & gas, power & energy, food & beverage and life sciences to support customers in optimising their processes in terms of reliability, safety, economic efficiency and environmental impact. With over 60 years experience in the design and manufacture of field instrumentation, Endress+Hauser is a process safety expert. We have more than 250 certified product lines, complete with a SIL instrument and intrinsically safe device portfolio for safety critical applications and hazardous areas. We know that process safety depends on having the right measurement technology applied to the right application and used in the right way. To support this, we also offer a range of training to pass on our expertise to managers, engineers and technical operatives working in the process industries. Endress+Hauser s dedicated CompEx centre incorporates traditional classroom and hands-on learning at our state-of-the-art training centre in Manchester, including eight dedicated training bays for practical training and assessment. The CompEx sceme is accredited by JT Limited (JTL).

What is CompEx? 2 What is CompEx? CompEx is a training, validation, assessment and certification scheme for managers, engineers and technical operatives working in potentially hazardous or explosive atmospheres. Potentially explosive atmospheres are not only found in onshore and offshore petrochemical plants and refining plants, they are also found in a wide range of industries including chemical, life sciences and food & beverage. Failure to ensure safe working practices in these environments could result in the ignition of explosive gases or dust clouds leading to injury or fatalities. As a result, CompEx is fast becoming a mandatory requirement for technicians and engineers on many plants, both on and offshore. Companies have a responsibility to their staff to ensure their safety and the safety of the public and to encourage health and safety best practice in the workplace. Jointly developed by the Engineering Equipment and Materials Users Association (EEMUA) and the training provider JTL, the scheme is nationally recognised as the industry standard and supported by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). The CompEx scheme is now recognised as a global solution for validating core competency of employees and contract staff working on equipment for use in potentially hazardous environments. Competency award CompEx combines practical training and assessment. Successful candidates will be awarded a credit cardstyle proof of competency, evidencing their ability to work safely in explosive atmospheres.

3 CompEx Training

The course 4 Who is the course aimed at? Electrical and instrumentation personnel working in the process and control industries within a hazardous area, who need to develop and demonstrate their competence in the selection, installation, inspection and maintenance of electrical equipment and instrumentation for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. The competency assessment is based on the following four modules: EX01: Preparation and installation of ATEX rated systems for gas environments. EX02: Inspection and maintenance of ATEX rated systems for gas environments. EX03: Preparation and installation of ATEX intrinsically safe systems. EX04: Inspection and maintenance of ATEX intrinsically safe systems. This is based upon IEC standards - primarily IEC 60079 parts 10, 14 and 17 - competency, validation and certification for candidates who work in explosive atmospheres. All CompEx course candidates will receive a copy of the CompEx Tool Box Guide Publication 214 Electrical Installation and Maintenance in Potentially Explosive Atmosphere.

5 CompEx Training Am I eligible to take the course? All candidates must have a recognised electrical or instrumentation background with practical experience of flammable atmosphere installations. Candidates must sign a self-declaration of eligibility for training on the application form to confirm they are electrically competent. It is strongly recommended that candidates are familiar Anwendung in with Ex cable glanding using steel wire armoured cable. Broschüren Candidates should be experienced with on-site permitry and electrical testing for continuity and insulation. Proof of electrical qualifications (e.g. apprenticeship certificate, Level 3 NVQ/SVQ or ECS/EJIB card) is required on the first day of the course. If you are not sure whether you are eligible for the course, please contact us before registering. How long does the training take? The training and assessment typically takes place over five days, Monday to Friday. Anwendung in Magazinen How will I be assessed? The assessments are both practical and written. Each candidate is required to demonstrate competence through a series of practical tests, followed by an online multiple choice exam. What certification will I receive? On completion of the course, successful candidates will receive a CompEx Certificate of Core Competence, that is valid for five years. Please register your interest by email at compex@uk.endress.com or phone 0161 286 5000

Course candidates 6 ExF foundation course A nationally recognised certificate in the basic theory of hazardous areas. The CompEx foundation training module runs over two days and has been developed to provide a broad understanding of the IEC standards for working in explosive atmospheres. Aimed at supervisors, technical and maintenance levels, this module forms part of the CompEx scheme and will demonstrate a measurable level of competency. What do I need to bring with me? You should bring safety footwear. All other relevant PPE will be provided. I.D and evidence of relevant vocational qualifications (see Am I eligible to take the course? ). Where does the training take place? At Endress+Hauser s Application, Training and Engineering Centre in Manchester. Address: Floats Road, Manchester, M23 9NF. This course does not offer practical training and there is no hands-on assessment. It is therefore more suited to anyone involved in hazardous area work who does not actually conduct installation or inspection. No prior knowledge of the requirements for working in Ex atmospheres is needed.
