How can Universities lead in Sustainable Consumption and Production? Dr Geoffrey Williams International Conference on Business and Sustainability Universiti Malaya 22-23 April 2015

SCP in Malaysia by 2030 By 2030 Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) will be fully established in Malaysia. Businesses and consumers, as well as government and other organisations will be following sustainable practices across all areas of their day-to-day activities. To support this momentum and to create and implement new innovations a large community of SCP professionals will be in place. By 2030, there will be a well-connected market of training providers and trainees on all relevant aspects of SCP and sustainable development to ensure that knowledge and skills transfer is organized efficiently and is oriented effectively towards the relevant areas of demand.

SCP in Malaysia by 2030 The MALAYSIAN SCP ACADEMY will provide a new focal point for training and capacity building as well as a community of professional practice in SCP. A new focal point for SCP training and capability building bringing together existing SCP trainers and training programmes, as well as creating new courses; A community of professional practice in SCP connecting practitioners from government, business, universities and civil society organisations in sharing and development activities and; Opportunities for collaboration with SCP related organisations in Malaysia and around the world through direct engagement and activity match-making. It will be open to everyone working in government, business, universities and civil society organisations.

This will include the following key features: An up-to-date inventory of existing SCP trainers and training courses A needs assessment for SCP related training for government, businesses, universities and civil society groups A regular gap analysis of needs and available courses based on the needs of stakeholders Innovative and creative strategies to fill the gaps by identifying local and international providers and creating new courses An expert advisory panel of SCP professionals and stakeholders with clear terms of reference to ensure high quality standards Use of web-based and social media to update training courses, trainer lists and new networking events and activities

A Community of Professional Practice The MALAYSIAN SCP ACADEMY will create a community of professional practice in SCP connecting practitioners from government, business, universities and civil society organisations in sharing and development activities. This should include the following activities: An inventory of professional certification and pathway routes to certification credits for higher qualifications and degrees Regular workshops on the MALAYSIAN SCP ACADEMY and its strategy Subject-specific workshops such as government green procurement, energy efficiency, green buildings, consumer issues Networking events, expert talks and sharing activities Communications and Engagement Strategy including a web-portal, email alerts, social media presence and news-alerts A registry of SCP related professionals based on membership of the Malaysian SCP Academy and recognition of qualifications, experience and expertise

Opportunities for collaboration The MALAYSIAN SCP ACADEMY will create opportunities for collaboration with SCP related organisations in Malaysia with counterparts around the world through direct engagement and activity match-making. This would include: An inventory of SCP-related organisations in the ASEAN region and around the world A continuous communications and engagement strategy using an up-to-date web-portal, email alerts, social media presence and news-alerts for international organisations Match-making opportunities, information exchange, sharing activities and engagement with Malaysian SCP organisations and other SCP organisations around the world

Economic Impacts The MALAYSIAN SCP ACADEMY will create important economic impacts. New employment opportunities will be available for many people in higher skilled and higher paid jobs. Companies will be able to develop new business opportunities leading to higher sales and revenues. More efficient production methods will lead to cost savings, higher profits and greater investment. By developing specialist SCP skills Malaysia will improve its competitiveness and find new export opportunities. Within the training industry new jobs for trainers and opportunities for new companies to provide the training will help the training industry to growth and contribute to the aim of making Malaysia an international education hub especially in TVET (technical, vocational education and training) areas.

Social Impacts Social impacts will also follow the creation of the MALAYSIAN SCP ACADEMY by creating professionals able to transfer cleaner, environmentally-friendly production processes into the workplace. A greater understanding of SCP will promote healthier consumption behaviour. New jobs and higher incomes from the expansion of SCP in businesses will contribute to raising living standards and promoting safer and more sustainable communities.

Environmental Impacts The environmental impact of the MALAYSIAN SCP ACADEMY will also be seen through cleaner production methods and greater availability of cleaner products and services. Better use of scarce resources, more efficient energy use, water conservation methods, waste reduction and recycling will also improve as more and more employees become familiar with SCP in their workplace training. For consumers, access to cleaner products and services will help them to develop cleaner consumption patterns The MALAYSIAN SCP ACADEMY will also raise awareness in the wider marketplace by promoting healthier products and educating consumers on better SCP practices in purchasing, using and disposing of the many things they buy.
