Apple Configurator Settings for Deploying ios Devices

Apple Configurator Settings for Deploying ios Devices

1. Preference Settings Preferences in Configurator can be used to manage what happens when supervised devices are connected and customizations for your Lock Screen. Managing Supervised Devices Automatically refresh - This sets up Configurator so devices are automatically updated when plugged into the computer managing the cart or devices. Remove apps and profiles Configurator did not install - Do not check this for a layered deployment. It will remove apps that the users have purchased. If this is checked in a Supervised setting the devices should be returned to their desired condition when connected.

Lock Screen These settings are fairly self explanatory. You can add an image of your own choosing if you would like.

2. Creating Profiles Profiles are used to push and manage settings for your devices. You can set up multiple profiles that manage different sets of devices. Creating a Profile Click on the plus sign at the bottom of the Configurator window. In the pop up window select Create a New Profile.

The first screen to set up is the General Panel. You must at a minimum fill out the first box and name the profile. It s best to name the profile so you know the purpose of the profile. In this case the profile will be for WiFi Settings. The organization and description are optional, but filling both out can be helpful. The description box can be used for notes to keep track of specifics unique to the profile. Security settings will keep users from removing the Profiles from the device. This can be a problem. You should leave it on Never.

3. Setting Up a Profile for WiFi Select the Wi Fi tab and click on Configure.

On the Wi Fi screen make the following selections: Service Set Identifier - Your Wi Fi network Check Auto Join. Proxy Setup should be Manual. Set the district Proxy settings. Security type for CCSD is WPA/WPA2. Password- Put in your Wi Fi password.

4. Setting Up Restrictions You might consider creating a separate profile for restrictions. If you are deploying in a 1 to 1 you probably won t put any restrictions on the devices. Click on Restrictions and then on Functionality. There are a lot of choices here. Most have to be site decisions with a couple exceptions. If you are in a layered model you must allow Installing Apps, otherwise turn it off. Uncheck Send diagnostic and usage data to Apple. This feature uses up bandwidth and has an adverse effect on battery life. 3rd generation ipads with ios 6 include Siri, so you need to make a decision on Siri.

Select the Applications tab. Uncheck Allow use of the Apple Store. This will prevent students from downloading apps and the YouTube app might be problematic since most of YouTube is blocked by the filter.

Click on the Media Content Tab. These settings should match district standards. You need to allow TV and Movies if you are going to use Podcasts.

5. Adding Apps In Configurator Select the Apps Button at the Top of the window to see the apps you have loaded from itunes into Configurator. To add an app select the plus (+) button on the bottom of the page.

Now go to Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Mobile Applications to choose the app or apps you want to import. You will be prompted to log in to the App Store. If you ve imported a paid app you will be reminded to import your redemption codes.

To import redemption codes begin by clicking on the 0. Select Import Redemption Codes, and select the spreadsheet downloaded from the Apple VPP program.

Open the spreadsheet and you will see the codes available to you. Select Import Redemption Codes and you will see the available codes in the Apps tab.

6. Building Your Base Image Once you have all the Profiles built, Preferences set and Apps added you are ready to build your base device and image all your devices. To begin Plug in your base ipad to the machine you are using for Configurator and you will see a number 1 on the Prepare screen. 1 2 3 1. Set supervision to ON. (You must supervise to add Apps.) 2. Select the profiles you want enabled on this device. 3. Click on Prepare.

You will now get a Pop-Up Asking if you are sure you want to apply the settings. Select Apply. Your screen will split and you will see your device being prepared.

When the device is finished you will see a green check (1) and the device will show up as Supervised (2). 2 1 3 At this point you can stop the process by clicking the Stop button (3). Select the Supervise 2 panel to proceed.

You now will see your device on the supervision panel. Unplug the Device and run through the activation process. Language - English Country- United States The device should connect to your network. Enable Location Services Set Up as a new Device Skip setting up the icloud Agree to the Terms and Conditions. Don t Send Diagnostics and Usage Reconnect to your Sync station.

When your device is connected, go to the menu bar and select Devices and Back Up. You will see a drop down menu to name the back up. Select Create Backup when you ve named the backup and wait for the backup to finish. When the backup is completed you can begin to image your devices.

7. Imaging Your Devices Once you have set up Apple Configurator and created a backup of your Base Image, you are ready to proceed with imaging your cart or devices. First decide if you are going to name your devices(1) or number them (2). Numbering them sequentially requires plugging them into the cart in order after beginning the Prepare sequence. Make sure the toggle is set to Supervise (3) and you have selected the profiles you want installed. Select to restore from your backup (5) and click on the prepare (6) button at the bottom of the screen. 1 2 3 5 4 6 You will get the warning insuring you really want to apply your setting to all the connected devices. Go ahead and click Apply and if you are numbering your devices through Configurator, begin attaching them. As the devices compete the process, they will get a green check and show up in the Supervise Panel.

8.Organizing Your Devices In the Supervise Panel you can organize and manage your supervised devices. Clicking on the + on the lower left corner of the window (1) will create groups to sort your devices. When you have your groups created drag the devices into the appropriate group. ( A device can only be in one group.) 1 Now you can update Apps, and change or update profiles for each group, by plugging the devices into Configurator and clicking on Refresh.
