General Information Our summer school offers Elementary, Middle School and High School students the opportunity to enhance their academic backgrounds, develop practical skills and receive intervention. A variety of course offerings have been developed to meet the individual needs and interests of students. As part of the course selection and scheduling process, your guidance counselor plays a key role in helping you plan your academic career and beyond. It is our desire that summer school becomes a most enjoyable and rewarding educational experience. Summer School slots will be filled on a priority basis. The priority is: 1. North Ridgeville students 2. Students from other school districts Registration Important: Mail-in registration for in-district students only need to be in prior to May 22, 2015. Out-of-district registration will only be accepted during Open Registration. The summer school open registration will be in the High School Media Center. Signs will be posted around the school. Forms must be signed by the building principal or guidance counselor before a student will be enrolled in a class. Forms may be obtained online, or at the Principal/Guidance Offices and sent to: Summer School Office North Ridgeville Education Center 5490 Mills Creek Lane North Ridgeville, OH 44039 Open registration will be at the High School on Thursday, June 11 and Friday, June 12 from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Registration is complete only when an application form has been submitted with medical form, signature of the guidance counselor/building principal and parent, and tuition has been paid in full. This may occur up to the first day of Summer School. Unless notified, all classes will be held as scheduled. Session Length The summer school week is Monday Thursday, no Fridays. Classes are offered on a 3 or 6-week basis. Refer to course description for length of individual courses. Semester length courses are 3-weeks in length. Yearlong courses are 6- weeks in length. Students may earn up to two credits, BUT can only register for one class at a time. Students must be completed with their first credit by the end of the first session, July 2, 2015, in order to register for another class. If a student takes a second course and does not complete the work, there is no reimbursement for the class. *OGT Study Group will be held Tuesday, June 9-Friday, June 12 in the Middle School. Notes Parents will be notified before a student is dropped from the Summer School Program. Grades will be sent home upon completion of the course and to the home school, if other than North Ridgeville City Schools. Payment Payment for Summer School courses must be received prior to the first day of Summer School June 15, 2015. Payment may be made to the Summer School Office by cash, personal check, or credit card. A late fee of $25.00 will be applied to any registration (Elementary, Middle and High School) after 12:00 p.m. June 15, 2015. Special payment arrangements must be approved in advance by the Summer School Coordinator. In the event a payment plan has been established, please note that all Summer School fees must be paid no later than the last Monday of Summer School July 20, 2015. If payment is not received by this date, credit will not be given for the class that was taken. 1

Regulations Fees and Refunds Fees must be paid on or before the first day of summer school. A student who arrives on the first day without having paid will not be enrolled. Payment should accompany all registrations. A late fee of $25.00 will be applied to any registration (Elementary, Middle and High School) after 12:00 p.m. June 15, 2015. Please make checks payable to: NORTH RIDGEVILLE BOARD OF EDUCATION No refunds will be given except in the event a class is cancelled due to lack of enrollment. No refunds are given to students who are expelled from summer school due to disorderly conduct or serious violation of the student code of conduct or violation of attendance policy. No Bus Transportation is provided Student may ride bicycles, but they are to be kept outside and locked. The school is not responsible for lost or stolen bicycles. Students may drive to summer school. They are required to park in the south side of the Middle School parking lot near the Ranger Stadium. This also includes the gravel parking lot. No cars are to be entered or moved during school hours. The west side parking lot is reserved for Staff only. Code of Conduct The complete Code of Conduct will be given to each student on the first day of school. The Code of Conduct for Summer School is the same set of guidelines followed during the regular school year. Discipline procedures are the same as used during the regular school year. These include parent conference, detention, and suspension. Attending Summer School is a privilege and not a requirement. Students are expected, therefore, to assume the responsibility of appropriate behavior. Summer School Attendance Policy Summer School provides a yearlong program in six weeks at the secondary level. Therefore, regular attendance is extremely important. One day missed is worth four days of instruction, as it takes 60 hours to earn one credit. When a student is absent from Summer School, the parent or guardian must notify the school of the student s absence. This may be done in advance of the day of absence through written communication or by telephone. Parents are required to call the school (440-327-3981) if the student will be absent for any reason. Students are expected to make up work missed. During Summer School, the 4 th absence will result in the removal from the class and a failure for a 6-week course being taken. (1½ days for a 3-week course). Each time a student is tardy to school or class, it is recorded as a quarter day absence from the course. A ½ day absence is recorded for the student who is an hour late to class. A full day is recorded after two hours. If the student s absence is not cleared in advance, the parent or guardian must notify the school on the day of absence. When calling the school the parent must have a reason for the absence. If the school is not notified of the student s absence, the school will attempt to notify the parent(s) by telephone or written communication. In cases where there has been no parent contact, the student must present, immediately upon his/her return to school, a dated note from the parent. The note should contain the student s name, reason for the absence, date of absence, and the parent s signature. If you are absent or sign out during the day, you are expected to have a parent/doctor note upon returning to school. You will have one day to turn in a doctor s note. (Example: If you were absent on Monday and returned to school on Tuesday, you would have until Wednesday morning to bring a note.) The Ohio Revised Code lists the following as legal reasons for absences: 1. Personal or family illness or injury 2. Quarantine 3. Death in family 4. Emergency or set circumstances judged as sufficient causes by school administrators Students who have been absent from a class more than 3 times will not receive credit for the course and will not be refunded for the course. All absences after the initial 3 days must be due to doctor certified illness, suspension, approved activity, certified court appearance, or death in the immediate family. FAMILY VACATIONS ARE NOT EXCEPTIONS. 2

Grades 7/8 Math Intervention - **APEX COURSE Math Foundations: This course is designed to expedite student math skills through grades 6-8. The program simultaneously builds the computational skills and the conceptual understanding needed to undertake high school level math courses with confidence. The course s carefully paced guided instruction is accompanied by interactive practice that is engaging and accessible. Formative assessments help students to understand areas of weakness and improve performance, while summative assessments chart progress and skill development. 10:00 11:45 North Ridgeville Residents: Materials Fee $15.00 Non-Resident: $125.00 Grades 7/8 Language Arts Intervention - **APEX COURSE English Foundations: This course offers skill building and strategy development in reading and writing. It is a reading program designed to help struggling readers develop mastery in the areas of reading comprehension, vocabulary building, study skills, and media literacy. The course stresses high interest, engaging use of technology, relevant topics, and robustly scaffolds practice. Students learn to use different types of graphic organizers as they develop and internalize reading and writing process strategies. They build confidence as they develop skills and experience success on numerous low stakes assessments that encourage growth and reinforce learning. 8:00 9:45 North Ridgeville Residents: Materials Fee $15.00 Non-Resident: $125.00 **APEX courses are online courses that are completed in a North Ridgeville computer lab and are accessible at home. Students are expected to do class work on a computer for a minimum of 5 hours a week in addition to the scheduled summer school hours. 10 th Grade OGT Study Group (Ohio Graduation Test) - Grades 10, 11, and 12 Students who have completed grade 10 or above (or repeating 9 th Graders) may participate if they have not passed all required tests. OGT Testing will take place the following week in the Middle School. 1-week course: Tuesday, June 9 - Friday, June 12 8:00-10:30 North Ridgeville Residents: no charge (OGT Study Group is offered to only North Ridgeville Residents) II. High School Courses All courses being offered are APEX courses with an additional Textbook based Algebra course. APEX courses are online courses that are completed in a North Ridgeville computer lab and are accessible at home. In addition to the scheduled summer school hours, students are expected to work on APEX course work outside of summer school for a minimum of 5 hours a week. Students may earn up to two credits, BUT can only register for one class at a time. Students must be completed with their first credit by the end of the first session, July 2, 2015, in order to register for a second credit. If a student takes a second credit and does not successfully complete the course by Thursday, July 23, 2015, there is no reimbursement for the class. Students who do not complete the entire course with a 70% pass on the midterm/final and keep a notebook will NOT be given credit and will be given an F for the class. Courses will begin Monday, June 15, 2015 from 8:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m., depending on availability. Enrollment is contingent upon number of seats available for the APEX courses. There will be a MANDATORY orientation for both parents and students taking high school APEX coursework on Monday, June 15 at 6PM in the new cafeteria of the North Ridgeville Middle School. Students and parents must sign and return the additional APEX Rules & Regulations form verifying they have read and understand the expectations of the program. English I - Grade 9 Open to all students with average or below average skills. This study of English will include a study of World Literature, Composition, and Speech. English II - Grade 10 Open to all students with average or below average skills. This course will continue the study of World Literature, Composition, and Speech. Prerequisite: Completion of English I English III (American Literature) - Grade 11 Open to students with average or below average skills. This course contains the study of American Literature. Prerequisite: Completion of English II English IV- Grade 12 Open to all students with average or below average skills. This course will contain the study of British Literature and Composition. Prerequisite: Completion of English III World History - Grade 9 This course offers the study of the influences of geographic settings, cultural perspectives, economic systems, political developments, and military developments in the period from 1750 through the present. American History - Grade 10 This course is a survey of the development of our country from the beginning as a British Colony through to the contemporary world. Primary attention is on the political, industrial, social and military development of the United States. American Government - Grades 11 & 12 This course discusses the three branches of the Federal Government with comparisons of state and local political units. Students will learn the basic concepts of government and how each can and should influence decisions. 3-week course Economics - Grades 11 & 12 This course will focus on how individuals, corporations and nations make economic decisions. 3-week course 5

Algebra I - Grades 9-12 This course studies the language and ideas of Algebra, formulas, equations, graphs, fundamental principles and processes, and problem solving. The purpose is to master the fundamentals and applications of elementary Algebra. Textbook Based Algebra I- Grades 9-12 This course will not be an APEX online based class. A licensed Math teacher will instruct students through lectures, activities, worksheet practice, etc. This course studies the language and ideas of Algebra, formulas, equations, graphs, fundamental principles and processes, and problem solving. The purpose is to master the fundamentals and applications of elementary Algebra. This class has limited seats and will be filled on a first come basis. 6-week course 1 Credit Cost: $285.00 Non-Resident: $365.00 Algebra II - Grades 10-11 This course is designed to immediately follow Plane Geometry. Students recommended for Plane Geometry should not sign up for this course. The course covers in much greater detail and depth the concepts from Algebra I. Also covered are topics on matrices, radicals, exponents, the binomial theorem and quadratic equations. Each student is required to have a graphing calculator. (Preferred model TI 83 Plus or TI 84) Prerequisite: Algebra I and Geometry Geometry - Grades 9-12 This course studies two-dimensional Euclidean Geometry. This emphasis is on the correct thinking and includes a study of rectangular figures, circles, area, proportions, special formulas, regular polygons, loci, and irregularities. Prerequisite: Algebra I Physical Science - Grade 9 This course includes the following topics: scientific method, laws of motion, energy, nature of waves, sound, earth s crust, periodic table, chemical bonds, acids and bases and nuclear energy. Biology - Grades 9-12 This course will include the concept of life and life processes with emphasis on the human and everyday experiences related to life science. Chemistry - Grades 9-12 This course will cover atoms, molecules, elements, compounds, states of matter, solutions, basic chemical reactions, chemical safety, and practical applications of chemical knowledge. A calculator will be used occasionally. Personal Finance - Grades 10-12 Personal finance helps students recognize and develop vital skills that connect life and career goals with personalized strategies and milestone-based action plans. Students explore concepts and work toward a mastery of personal finance skills, deepening their conceptual understanding of key ideas and extending their knowledge in a variety of problemsolving applications. 3-week course 6

High School Enhancement Physical Education - Grades 9-12 Also open to incoming 9 th graders The student will participate in team sports and individual life-time recreational activities with a licensed teacher. Tuition includes the cost of field trips and transportation.
