September 2015 SOLLERS POINT TECHNICAL Message from the Principal Welcome to the September edition of our school newsletter. I hope everyone had an opportunity to relax and enjoy the wonderful weather this summer. As we begin our first quarter of instruction, I would like to bring you up-to-date on some recent changes at Sollers Point Technical High. Ms. Angela Cassano is our new Baking and Pastry instructor. She is a BCPS graduate from the culinary program at Eastern Technical High and the Baltimore International College (BIC) and most recently worked for Bon Appetit Management and Goucher College. Ms. Amanda Coburn is our new mathematics chair joining us from Franklin High. Ms. Coburn is 1 of 121 National Board Certified instructors in BCPS. To achieve National Board Certification she submitted a four-entry portfolio, comprised of three in-class video recordings and one out-of-class accomplishment documentation, and completed six certificate area-based exercises. Once Ms. Coburn fulfilled these requirements, a panel of 12 board-trained teachers reviewed and assessed the submitted materials before awarding certification. She will be teaching Algebra 1 and Geometry. Mr. Bryan Harris returns to Sollers Point after a two year hiatus at Eastern Tech. Mr. Harris will join our Career Connections department in order to teach Introduction to Career and Research Development (CRD) through Dundalk/Sollers. Mr. John Klug joins Sollers Point from Dundalk High. Mr. Klug is replacing Ms. Gay as the coordinator for our magnet programs. He will also be teaching the 9th grade Effective Learning for College and Careers course as well as coordinating our monthly school newsletter and testing program. Mr. Ralph Olson is our new engineering Instructor. Mr. Olson has worked for TEAM BCPS for 12 years most recently at the Carver Center for the Arts as a technology and engineering instructor. Mr. Olson has taught technology, business, Cisco Networking, and PLTW engineering during his tenure with our school system. Mr. William Plantholt returns to Sollers Point Tech after a two year hiatus at Franklin High. Mr. Plantholt is certified master electrician who will oversee our automotive and construction programs as well as our 12th grade career connections program.
Message from the Principal (Cont.) Ms. Regan Roth is our new mathematics instructor. Ms. Roth earned her degree from Towson University in May. She completed her teaching internship experiences at Lansdowne High and the Catonsville Alternative Center. She will be teaching geometry. Mr. Justin Rowlands is our new automotive instructor. He is a graduate of Penn Technical College and holds numerous industry certifications in the automotive industry. Mr. Rowlands was also a volunteer instructor for the Skills USA automotive program in PA. Ms. Rebecca Stackhouse joins our science department where she will teaching biology and chemistry. Ms. Stackhouse earned a Master s degree in teaching from UMBC and a Bachelor of Science degree from Duke University. Ms. Stackhouse interned at Sollers Point during the 2014-15 school year. Student parking passes are $10.00 this year. Please hang the permit from your mirror. Students should always park in front of the football stadium. Students are not permitted to park in the faculty parking lot closest to the building or in any of the reserved or visitor parking spots. Baltimore County will continue to use BCPS One for teacher, class, and grade information in 2015-16. Teachers are required to update their BCPS One gradebook a minimum of 1 time every 2 weeks. BCPS ONE is located at http://bcpsone.bcps.org/. Students will use their home school username and password to access courses and grades for both schools they attend. Parents/guardians will receive their access code information from the home school. Sollers Point will not be distributing access codes for BCPS ONE as we are not a home school. All students in the district PreK-12 must have a BCPS ONE identification card. This card will be used for period attendance during the 2015-16 school year. BCPS has created Policy and Rule 3710- http:// www.bcps.org/system/policies_rules/rules/3000series/rule3710.pdf that outlines when and where the ID must be worn. A student will be charged $1 for a temporary card and $5 for a replacement card per Rule 3710. Back to School night will occur Wednesday, September 9, 2015. Parents and guardians of our afternoon session students may visit with teachers from 5:15-6:15 p.m. Parents and guardians of our morning session students may visit with teachers from 6:45 7:45 p.m. (See page 5 for more Information) GO STALLIONS! Cosmetology Salon and Spa News We would like to invite you to spend the morning or afternoon with us at Sollers Point Tech Salon & Spa. Our Cosmetology Program is a learning environment and provides a variety of services for a minimal fee. Kindly notice that our students are working very hard to become confident young ladies and are very excited that you allow them the experience to work with you. Appointments are required so please stop by or call at 410-887- 7075 to schedule your service. The morning clinic will open on September 28 th. Guests must be signed in by 7:30 AM in the front office in order to receive morning services with Level II students on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The afternoon clinic will open September 15th. Guests must be signed in by 11:40 AM in the front office in order to receive afternoon services with Level III students on Monday, Tuesday, and Fridays. Message from the School Nurse Your child s safety is our concern. On the first day of school students were given a yellow discretionary medication form to be completed and signed by parents/guardians. The form must be returned to the health suite and kept on file. Please note your child will receive a discretionary medication form for each school that he/she attends. Please complete the form for each school. The discretionary medication form includes: The medications that may be given to your child on an as needed basis should you choose to allow. Medications include ibuprofen, acetaminophen, Benadryl, cough drops, and antacids. The most up to date contact information for your child which is needed in case of an emergency. An opportunity for you to disclose any health concerns that we may need to know. Students may not carry medications in school including inhalers unless they have doctor s orders on file in the health suite. Academy of Health Professions Level I students in the AHP magnet are learning about the various career opportunities in the healthcare field and the levels of education required for each. Students in Level II take three different courses: Anatomy/Physiology, Pharmacy Tech, and Certified Nursing Assistant. In A&P students are reviewing the basic structures and functions of the major organ systems. In Pharmacy Tech students are learning about roles and responsibilities of a Certified Pharmacy Technician and what tasks are considered out of their scope of practice. In CNA, students are learning about the nursing hierarchy, members of the nursing team, and nursing care patterns. Students collaborate to create visual presentations.

Turn right onto Holabird Avenue and proceed to Delvale Avenue. Turn left on Delvale Avenue and follow to the parking lot or bus loop entrance at 1901 Delvale Avenue. Parents may park in either lot. Parking spaces in the bus loop are marked with blue lines. Our Vision Sollers Point Technical High will provide every student with rigorous, relevant, and culturally responsive instruction in order to provide a 21 st century academic and career-technical education resulting in globally competitive students who are career and college ready. Every student who attends Sollers Point will complete a technical program and earn an industry certification as a result of deliberate and exemplar teaching.
