Transportation: The university is more or less integrated in the train station of Slagelse. This means that once you leave the train at Slagelse train station it takes about 1 minute to reach the main entrance. Said differently: It is very difficult not to find the yellow university building, once you get out of the train! Trains normally depart every half an hour from Copenhagen Central Station. It takes you about one hour by train to travel between Copenhagen and Slagelse. If you arrive from Kastrup (Copenhagen) Airport you will most likely have to change train at Copenhagen Central Station. All in all, this will take you 1½ hour travel time. If you arrive from the opposite direction, it takes you approximately 35 minutes from Odense to Slagelse.
Via this link http://www.rejseplanen.dk/ you can check out the train schedules yourself. Please notice that the train departure and arrivals will be revised over the summer so check out the schedules in late august just to be sure. Once you are in Slagelse a lot of things can be done by walking. Perhaps you must hire a taxi in front of the train station the first time you arrive and want to go to the hostel/hotel if you bring heavy luggage. Slagelse town, local sports and the university campus: Slagelse is one of the oldest towns in Denmark and it is the 8 th largest town of the island Zealand. Its roots can be dated back before the year 1000 AC. The city center is still dominated by the medieval legacy. Just outside the town the old viking fortress Trelleborg is situated. The city is placed approximately 90 km from Copenhagen and has always been the commercial and trading center of western Zealand rather than an industrial site. In addition, today the city hosts several educational institutions, including the university campus. For centuries, the surroundings of the city have been the location of large military barracks which influence the urban landscape. In 2007 as part of a municipal reform four minor municipalities were integrated into Slagelse municipality. Today, the female major is the social democrat Lis Tribler. Slagelse is one of seven `Sport for all-municipalities in Denmark. The focus of this national project is to strengthen sport commitment of the whole population (children and adolescents in particular) and provide
the opportunities for all to participate and exercise, e.g. by focusing on facilities useful for all not only inhabitants engaged in elite sports. From the past: Slagelse Dream Team When it comes to elite sports Slagelse was in the 2000s home of the successful female handball `Slagelse Dream Team who three times managed to win the Champions League, but from 2008 faced huge financial and sportive difficulties. Today the team has managed to return to the best female national handball league, but without the major success of the past. The best football team (Team VestSjælland FC) plays the second best league with ambitions to make it into the best division, but also with a modest (let s say scarce) administrative apparatus to support the professional structures. In badminton - which is a very popular sport in Denmark Team Skælskør-Slagelse won the Danish championship for the season 2011/12. Furthermore there is a swim club that manages to produce lot of young talents, and the hilly forest and country side around Slagelse provides good opportunities for people engaged in MTB and road cycling. The University of Southern Denmark (SDU) has its main location in Odense, but in additional campuses are found in Esbjerg, Kolding, Sønderborg and Slagelse. The Campus of Slagelse is the only location of SDU to be situated in what is normally perceived as the eastern part of Denmark. The campus is relatively new. In 2007 a Business School Center became part of SDU. The campus hosts the Department of Leadership & Corporate Strategy (ILV) as well as a branch of a language- and communication department. In January 2011 we moved into new and modern buildings close to the train station a strategic choice because close to 50% of our students come from the area of greater Copenhagen. ILV offers a BA-degree in Economics - & Business administration and a Master in Change Management. A part of the BA-program contains a BA Economics - & Business administration with a focus on Sport and Event Management. This sport management education was initially introduced at the SDU campus in Esbjerg, but in 2009 this education was `exported to Slagelse as well. Recently - by the mid of 2011 - a new
sport management research group populated by young scholars named `Sport, Business, Politics and Mass Media was created with the purpose of filling out a cap in Danish research. So far, sport management has only gained marginal attention in Danish sport science (opposed to the sociology, history and education of sport), but it is our intention to change this over the next coming years.
