4 University of Southern Denmark Founded in 1966, the University of Southern Denmark is a modern, state-funded university with close links with business, industry and institutions in Denmark and across the world. It offers education and research at the highest level, with five faculties: Health Sciences, Science, Engineering, Social Sciences and Humanities. Every day more than 1,400 researchers and 19,000 students build on the University s reputation as a centre of academic excellence. health, biotechnology, robotics, political science, management, literature and history. The number of degrees taught in English is increasing constantly. DEGREES The University offers degrees at bachelor, master and Ph.D. level (i.e. 3 (3.5) years). The University has grown significantly in recent years offering several new degrees, particularly in information technology and communication. The University is also Scandinavia s only university to offer a degree in chiropractics. RESEARCH The University offers research opportunities at a high academic level and first-class resources. The University s growing worldwide reputation is built on expertise in areas such as public INTERNATIONAL PROFILE Each year more than 800 international students choose to study at the University, which has more than 400 exchange agreements with partner institutions across the world. Agreements are made through the EU Erasmus, the Nordic Nordplus programmes and across the world. The number of international students choosing to study at the University has increased steadily over recent years, making students part of an active and dynamic international community. At the same time, the number and range of exchange agreements for Danish students wishing to study abroad has also grown. The University is firmly committed to thinking and acting internationally at all levels. This global approach enables international students and researchers to participate equally alongside their Danish counterparts.

7 Exchange Programmes The University s exchange programmes offer flexibility and choice. You can study for one semester or a full academic year. Whether you are an undergraduate eager to experience university life abroad or a graduate wanting to broaden your expertise, our exchange programmes can give you what you are looking for. You can choose courses from all of the degree programmes offered in English and more. To ensure exchange students have the widest range of study options, the University offers tailored package programmes to exchange students and individual courses taught in English besides those in the degree programmes. Not only can you choose from hundreds of courses at bachelor and master level, you can also combine courses to suit your own needs. Just make sure your choices are relevant to your degree at your home institution. In addition, the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Social Sciences offer a programme especially designed for international students. Unique in Denmark, Scandinavian Area Studies combines beginner s Danish language with Danish and Scandinavian culture, economy, history and marketing. The Faculty of Humanities also offers courses taught in Arabic, French, German and Spanish at bachelor and master level. If there is no existing exchange agreement with your University, you can arrange your own stay. This means you are a guest student rather than an exchange student. While the application process is different, your study options remain the same. To make sure you get the most out of your stay, either the University s Erasmus Student Network or the International Office arranges buddies for exchange students in Odense. You are paired up with a student who helps you settle in. 8 Information on Becoming an Exchange Student university of southern denmark > exchange programmes > 8 Student definition Exchange student: a student, sent from a partner institution, who studies one or two semesters at the University of Southern Denmark. The course credits are to be transferred back to the degree studied in the home country. Guest student: a student who studies a semester or two at the University of Southern Denmark. The course credits are to be transferred back to the degree studied in the home country. The student is not from a partner institution. Degree student: a student who comes to take an entire degree at the University of Southern Denmark. Study possibilities As an exchange student, you can study at one of our five campuses that offer courses in English i.e. Odense, Kolding, Esbjerg, Sønderborg and Slagelse. The University offers programmes especially tailored to exchange students taught in English and 39 entire degrees also taught in English. In addition the Faculty of Humanities offers courses taught in English, German, French and Spanish at bachelor and master level. Just choose which suits you. Academic system Bachelor level = undergraduate (3 years or 3.5 years) = 180 or 210 ECTS credits Master level = graduate (2 years) = 120 ECTS credits on top of the 180/210 ECTS credits from the bachelor level Academic calendar Autumn semester: Classes start September 1 and run to mid December. Exams take place in December and/or January. Autumn break is October At the Faculty of Science classes start August 25. Spring semester: Classes start February 2 and run to mid May. Exams take place in May/June. Easter break is April At the Faculty of Science classes start August January 26. Application deadlines Autumn semester: May 1 Spring semester: November 1. You can download application forms at: Admission requirements You must meet the entry requirements (including the language requirement) for the courses you wish to take, meet the application deadline and enclose all relevant documents. To follow courses at master level, you must have completed what compares to 180 ECTS credits.

9 Language requirement A good standard of English is required because teaching at the University typically involves student participation, class discussion, project work and student presentations. This means that you must have a command of the English language equivalent of the IELTS score of 6.5 or the TOEFL score of 575/239/88. We ask your home university to document your English skills through our language requirement form. Residence permit Any student studying for more than three months in Denmark must apply for residence permit. If you are a citizen of the EU or the EEA countries, you must apply for residence permit once you have arrived in Denmark. If you hold a non EU/EEA citizenship, you must apply for residence permit through the Danish Embassy or Consulate in your country before you go to Denmark. You must apply at least three months before the semester starts to get your residence permit in time. For more information visit: Arrival You must arrive in time for our orientation day(s) which takes place a few days before the semester starts. In rare circumstances we accept late arrival on request. Accommodation All five campuses guarantee accommodation for students from partner universities if we have recieved a complete application by our application deadline. Orientation day A few days before classes start i.e. August 28 and/or 29 and January 29 and/or 30, each campus has an orientation programme for new exchange students. ECTS credits A full semester workload equals 30 ECTS credits. Two semesters equal 60 ECTS credits. Master courses often count as 10 ECTS credits, i.e. a third of one semester. Master students typically have teaching hours per week. You are expected to take a full workload during your stay at the University, including exams. ECTS = European Credit Transfer System. Danish language courses You can sign up for Danish language courses at language schools in town for a small fee. These take place during the semester. Living expenses on a monthly basis in DKK Rent: ( ) Food: ( ) Transport (monthly bus card): 200 ( 27) Books: ( 67-80) Living expenses vary according to personal requirements and standards. Prices to expect when you go out: a meal costs approx. DKK 120 ( 16), a beer about DKK 30 ( 4) and a bottle of wine between DKK 100 ( 13.5) and 200 ( 27) - again according to standard. In total a person studying in Denmark should expect to need about DKK 5000 ( 675) on a monthly basis. This does not include the deposit for a room. One euro is approx. DKK Tuition Exchange students do not pay tuition. If the assessment is successful, you receive our enrolment pack containing your letter of enrolment, and information on various practical matters in the course of May/June or November/December. 14 Scandinavian Area Studies (SAS) The Scandinavian Area Studies programme is a bachelor level programme tailored to exchange students, uniquely combining beginner s Danish with Danish and Scandinavian culture, marketing, economy and history. It is a joint programme offered by the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Social Sciences at Odense campus. It is primarily for exchange students with enrolment on a first come, first serve basis. Guest students can be admitted, if there are places available after the deadline May 1. university of southern denmark > exchange programmes > 14 The programme runs for 15 weeks each autumn semester (September 1-mid December) and is usually finished by December 19. 22 The Faculty of health sciences You can tap into expertise from across the world thanks to the Faculty s commitment to internationalisation. Teachers come from countries as diverse as the US, Germany, Estonia and the Netherlands. The Faculty s global network of private and public institutions enables staff and students to engage in international work with leading health organisations. university of southern denmark > exchange programmes > 22 PUBLIC HEALTH The Faculty of Health Sciences offers courses in public health at master level taught in English at Esbjerg campus. SPORTS SCIENCE At the Institute of Sports Science and Clinical Biomechanics courses are generally offered in Danish. A good command of Danish is therefore required. Exchange stays with courses in English may be arranged on request for students at master level. MEDICINE The study of medicine is entirely taught in Danish. It is therefore a prerequisite that medicine exchange students have a good command of Danish to follow courses. Medicine Internship As a student of medicine, you can apply for 3-4 months of internships. You rotate between 3-4 sections, spending up to 4 weeks in each. It is not possible to do 3-4 months in only one section. The number of internships is limited. Students get placed on a first come, first serve principle. A command of Danish is not required. Please note that medical students in Denmark complete compulsory hospital service after their master exam. The details of this service are arranged by the National Board of Health and not by the universities. Thus, we are not able to help in this matter.
