3 About the Course: The course on Research Methodology in Social Sciences is designed to impart knowledge for scientific research to integrate qualitative and quantitative approaches in research and orient the young researchers to new advanced techniques for precise, rational and scientific research. It also aims to train the scholars with advance statistical packages including SPSS for using in various fields and sub fields of social sciences. It is particularly meant for those who are engaged in survey research and have some basic knowledge of data processing, analysis and interpretation. One purpose of the course is to make aware & help the concern scholars with basic features of computerized database management system and simultaneously concentrating on the usage of computers in data analysis and data interpretation. The course would include a combination of theoretical lectures and respective practical on computers and a few commonly available and need based computer applications for quantitative and qualitative analysis of the data both. The delegates would be given some research project and the data generated would be used for application of various statistical concepts and techniques. It will be from simple univariate to more complex multi-variate techniques of data interpretation. Excel and SPSS both would be used for data processing and analysis. Methodology of the Course: The course will be operated through theoretical lectures and practical applications of different research modules and statistical techniques. The participants will be provided with some data generated and computers for application of discussed research methodology. Group participation, field survey as well as research paper writing techniques would also be executed as per the itinerary of the event. Objectives of the Course: 1. Philosophy of enquiry and scientific knowledge. 2. Social science research designs and techniques. 3. Data collection and data analysis 4. Use the Statistical Package in Social Science research. 5. Developing and Presenting Academic Writings.
4 About Shivaji University: Shivaji University, established on 18 th November, 1962 by Hon. Dr. Radhakrishnan, the then President of India. The major objective behind foundation of this University was to cater knowledge to the regional needs of Southern/Western Maharashtra. The jurisdiction of the University is spread over three districts viz. Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara. This region of Maharashtra boasts of rich and varied socio-cultural heritage. Under the innovative and socially reformed leadership of Hon. Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, the princely ruler of Kolhapur, the city had established at the initial phase of this century, a focal point of educational opportunities for all classes and communities of South-Western Maharashtra, and northern parts of neighbouring state Karnataka. This city belongs to legend Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil, who struggled for spreading awareness of education to the masses by his innovative scheme of 'Earn and Learn'. When the University was founded by the Shivaji University Act of 1962, the objectives set before the University included making opportunities of higher education accessible to rural youth, conducting fundamental and applied research in the field of science and humanities to ensure regional growth and development. In the year 1962, the University, practically started functioning with 34 affiliated colleges and about 14000 students with 5 Postgraduate Departments on campus. Today the number of affiliated colleges has reached the number to 280 and students strength to 3, 00,000 with 34 Postgraduate Departments on campus. The University imparts education in 10 major faculties of Arts, Social Science, Science, Commerce, Education, Fine Arts, Law, Medicine, Ayurvedic Medicine, Engineering and Technology. The University consolidated its base in initial two decades by 'taking education to the people'. 1980s saw major expansion, especially the growth of professional faculties like Engineering, Education, Management and Medicine. The recent phase of the University can be termed as "a pursuit of academic excellence". Last 4 5 years several attempts are being made to overcome the image of University as a regional University. Recently the Shivaji University, Kolhapur has been re-accredited for A Grade in the third cycle of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NACC with CGPA-3.16).
5 About Department of Sociology: The Department of Sociology was established in the Shivaji University, during the academic year 1970-71.The courses run by department are M.A., M.Phil and Ph.D. The major thrust area is emerging patterns in the wake of Globalisation having the sub-themes of Environment culture and society, Poverty and Social Inqualities, Gender and Society and Mass Communication and information society. The department has well-qualified and experienced faculty and it has well furnished seminar hall and library and well developed computer lab with internet and SPSS data processing facility for research students. In 2004, UGC-SAP-DRS-Phase-I sanctioned by UGC, New Delhi is a great achievement for the University and Department also. Now, UGC-SAP-DRS-Phase-III is going on. Under the present phase Rs. 72 Lakh grants + Project Fellow fellowship have been sanctioned by UGC. There are more than 2000 books of social sciences in Department library. Dr. Pralhad Mane, Assistant Professor How to Reach: Rail: Kolhapur has its own railway station and it's just an 11-hour journey from Mumbai or Bangalore both to Kolhapur. Road: Kolhapur is about 450-km to south of Mumbai and it's a 10 to 11 hour journey from Mumbai or Banglore to Kolhapur by road. Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has a regular service to this route with semi luxury and regular buses. Even private bus service is available to reach here from Mumbai, Pune, Goa, Solapur (also spelt as Sholapur) and Bangalore. Local Transport: Auto-rickshaws are the most common mode of transport along with the bus service run by the municipal corporation. Taxis are also available.
6 About Kolhapur: The Kolhapur is famous for being a centre of Art, education, industry and sports particularly wrestling. Kolhapur comes under sugarcane belt and because of this people are very rich and live prosperous life. Kolhapuri chappals are renowned for their durability and beauty of make. Kolhapuri Saaj is a special type of necklace which is very popular especially for the Maharastrian Women and their looks. Although there are different 'saaj' designed in all over Maharashtra but the Kolhapuri Saaj has its uniqueness. Recently Maharahstra Government declared Kolhapur is National Heritage because of Marathi film industry. Selection Criteria: Only 30 seats are available for the course. Registered Ph. D. students of any recognized Indian university/research institute from any branch of Social Sciences would be invited for this training workshop. The candidates with its basic knowledge of statistics and computer application and belonging to Scheduled Caste community from the nearby states e.g. Karnataka, Goa, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh will be given its priority.
