Green still predominates, accentuated by the bright red of the dogwoods. After these last few days of chilly weather, the trees will take on their fullness of color soon. The changing of the leaves, bright leaves becoming brown and then dropping to the ground to become a part of the earth, is a reminder of that part of the cycle of life that we prefer not to reflect on much: death. Fall is a time of dormancy, nature taking on the appearance of death for the winter months ahead. And so even as we enjoy the beautiful colors, we are aware of the fragility, even the brevity of life. But then spring comes, and before we know it, the buds are bursting forth on those same trees, the sign of new life, fresh and clean. A tree reveals in its yearly cycle the way of nature, new growth leading to dormancy and then brought again to vibrant life. But for Christians, the tree and its life pattern are constant reminders of something much more profound: not an ongoing cycle, but the definitive, singular action of God the Father in Jesus Christ his Son, who was nailed to a tree for us. The wood of the cross bore the body of Jesus, who lived to teach us the way of God, died for our sins, and is raised that we might have everlasting life. On Good Friday each year we venerate the wood of the cross, which has come to symbolize the profound love of Christ for each one of us. And so also, as we watch the trees in each given season, through nature God reminds us of that tree upon which Christ died, and thereby gave us life. In the Liturgy of the Hours, the first antiphon for the Office of Readings in the first week of the Psalter reads: "See how the cross of the Lord stands revealed as the tree of life." The cross is not a sign of the finality of death, but on the contrary, the sign that death itself has died, and that we have been raised to new life through the resurrected Lord. We take up Christ's own cross as our own, walk with him, and through faith in all he has done and does, find ourselves participating ever more deeply in resurrection life. As we observe the life cycle of the tree, we experience over the course of the year a reminder of all that Jesus has done for us. But the Tree of Life will never die, because by dying on a tree and being raised to new life, Christ has made all things new, and invites us to be one with him in that life, forever. ~ Fr John David Bulletin notices and advertising: All information must be sent to the parish office no later than 8AM on Mondays.
