Double Reed Camp June 11-14, 2013 Arlington, Texas University of Texas Arlington MG Double Reeds Oboe and Bassoon Reed Making And Chamber Music Michael Gathings and Scott Pool, Bassoon instructors Kara Giangiulio and Rogene Russell, Oboe instructors Open to Grades 9-12 Reduced rates for college students and adults

Come learn the art of reed making for oboe and bassoon in a friendly summer camp environment. Reed making is an essential component of playing the oboe or bassoon. Learning how to make reeds will give you the insight and freedom to advance on your instrument by handcrafting your very own playable reeds. Over the four days of camp, attendees will learn to take cane that is already gouged, shaped and profiled and learn the secrets to excellent reed making. Hand made reeds, which are controlled by the student at every step, will perform better than most any retail purchased reeds at a fraction of the cost. Our camp is designed to show students every step of the way, including finishing techniques to adjust the reeds after they have been prepared. Students may bring their own reed making tools, or basic tool kits can be pre-purchased through the registration form. Kits can be reserved at a camp discount and will be available on the first day of camp. Once registered, students will receive a list of materials they may need for the camp. Individual tools will also be available for purchase. Daily Schedule 9:00AM Morning Reed Making Sessions 12:00PM Lunch 1:00PM Chamber Music Rehearsals 2:30PM Chamber concert (Friday Only) 4:00PM Camp ends Reed making sessions will be held in the morning and chamber music ensembles will rehearse after lunch. Students will be placed in appropriate levels of chamber groups once the camp enrollment is finalized. Music will be provided, but students are welcome to bring their favorite pieces for consideration. 2

Why attend our Reed Making Camp? When it comes to the oboe and bassoon, 90% of performance issues come from playing on a reed that will not respond. This problem is unique to the double reeds and is why we spend so much time perfecting the process of making good reeds. This is also why commercial reeds can be so expensive. However, even the best commercial reeds cannot compare to a good hand made reed. Most commercial reed makers have to skip steps in the process in order to make reeds affordable; otherwise, they would be $50-60 each! At our camp, you will learn ALL the important steps to making great reeds. With good reeds, you will have a significant edge above other oboists and bassoonists for school and region auditions. Our camp is held in a serious university setting, with professional reed makers as teachers. The skills taught will be on par with university study over an intensive four days with the interest in learning held at the highest priority. Though attendees will have loads of fun, the goal is to immerse students in the art of reed making and chamber music as artistic endeavors.!!! SPECIAL PRICING FOR UT-ARLINGTON BAND CAMP STUDENTS!!! As a special incentive for students who may want to attend both UT-Arlington s Double Reed Camp and Band Camp the following week, students may take $120 off the fee of the Reed Camp AND $50 off the fee of the Summer Concert Band Camp.
