Box Okemos, MI Greetings: August 5, 2015 The Meridian Community Band will be hosting the 21 st Annual Red Cedar Festival of Community Bands on Saturday, March 5, 2016, at Okemos High School, Okemos, Michigan. Eleven community bands will each present a thirty-minute public concert followed by a thirty-minute educational performance clinic conducted by one of three clinicians. Each clinician is highly regarded and is an enthusiastic supporter of the adult band movement. Instrumental master classes will be offered to members of participating bands free of charge. The classes will be presented by university-level specialists and are designed to be participatory. Participants are urged to "make a day of it" in order to enjoy the fine performances of bands from across the state. Organizational networking, camaraderie, and archival recordings are among the other activities and benefits of the festival. Enrollment in the festival is limited to eleven bands for The registration fee is $200 per organization. Registration forms and payment must be received by October 1, A prompt response is encouraged to meet the registration deadline. New this year in the registration material is a request that you provide information regarding the legislative district of your organization. Also new is a request that you provide us with the name of your local newspaper and public radio station (for marketing purposes). 2 Performance Clinicians: Dr. David Thornton Michigan State University Dr. David Thornton is a faculty member of the Michigan State University College of Music in East Lansing. He is serving as the assistant director of bands. He received a Bachelor of Music Education degree and a Bachelor of Music in Clarinet Performance from Florida State University. He earned a Master of Music degree and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Wind Conducting Michigan State University. Dr. Thornton served as assistant director of bands at Eau Gallie High School in Melbourne, Florida and more recently as director of bands at Leon High School in Tallahassee, Florida, before accepting is current position at MSU. He is a member of the Florida Music Educators Association, the Florida Bandmasters Association, and the College Band Directors National Association. Patricia Brumbaugh Northwest Michigan College Patricia Brumbaugh is a faculty member of Northwest Michigan College in Traverse City, Michigan. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Olivet College, a Master of Music Education degree from the University of Michigan and is ABD in a doctoral program in French horn performance at the University of Memphis. Ms. Brumbaugh recently retired from a teaching career which spanned thirty-seven years, She served as Director of Bands at Arkansas State University and several Michigan high schools including Ann Arbor Huron, Jackson Northwestern Central Montcalm, and Traverse City West. She was voted Outstanding Band Teacher of the Year in 2006 and became a member of the American Bandmasters Association in She is highly sought as a clinician, adjudicator, and guest conductor. Paul F. DeRubeis Rochester College Paul F. DeRubeis is currently the conductor of the Rochester College Concert Band and an adjunct faculty member of Rochester College. In 2014 Mr. DeRubeis retired from Bloomfield Hills Schools after 38 years of teaching band. From he was Director of Bands and head of the Music Department Lahser High School. During his tenure the band program developed a reputation of excellence receiving consistent 1st Division ratings at MSBOA Festivals and first place honors at Festival of Music in Orlando and St. Louis, and superior ratings in festivals in New York, Ottawa and Washington D.C. After leaving

3 the high school, he taught 4th - 8th grade band at the elementary and middle school level where the bands continued to perform at exemplary levels. Mr. DeRubeis, a graduate of Wayne State University, was MSBOA District IV Band Teacher of the Year in 2003 and In 2010 he was a finalist for MSBOA State Band Teacher of the Year. Mr. DeRubeis is an active clinician and adjudicator for MSBOA, and SMB festivals, has been a guest lecturer at Oakland University. He was elected to membership in the American School Band Directors Association (ASBDA) in Mr. DeRubeis has presented clinic sessions for the Midwestern Music Conference in Ann Arbor, MSBOA District XVI, and the Michigan Music Conference in Grand Rapids. Mr. DeRubeis maintains an active private lesson studio and is a performer on trombone and euphonium and currently performs in the St. Mary of the Hills Brass Choir. He and his wife Darlene reside in Rochester Hills, and have three adult children, all of whom are brass players. Festival Soloist: Dr. Robert Spring Arizona State University Dr. Robert Spring, a native of Jackson, Michigan, earned a Doctoral of Music Arts degree from the University of Michigan, He currently teaches clarinet at Arizona State University. He is a renowned soloist who has performed with symphony orchestras and wind ensembles throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, and South America. His services as an adjudicator, clinician, and lecturer are in high demand. He has authored many articles dealing with both contemporary clarinet techniques, and multiple articulation methods.
