About the Program Wesleyan men s soccer has long been one regarded as one of the top teams both regionally and nationally, a reputation earned through 87 seasons of excellence. Three Cardinal squads have posted undefeated regular seasons, most recently the 2009 squad that opened the season 11-0-4 before falling in a NESCAC semifinal. Wesleyan also holds the record for largest victory in a NESCAC tournament contest with its 5-0 victory over Colby in the 2009 quarterfinals and stands as one of only three conference schools that has defeated six-time champion Williams in the conference tournament. Wesleyan s postseason triumphs over its Little Three rival are not limited to NESCAC postseason play, as the 1991 Cardinal squad defeated the Ephs to win the ECAC championship and cap a 15-1-1 season. In addition to a tradition of excellence on the pitch that few schools can match, Wesleyan soccer players receive a first-rate education at one of the nation s preeminent liberal arts institutions. Wesleyan is among the most selective institutions in the country, having admitted just 20 percent of applicants for the class of 2016. The Wesleyan curriculum features no course requirements, a rarity among both large universitities and liberal arts colleges. The student-faculty ratio is 9:1, and Wesleyan s faculty includes a Nobel laureate, Pulitzer Prize winner, MacArthur ( genius grant ) fellow, and numerous recipients of Rockefeller, Guggenheim, and other national prizes for teaching and research. The Wesleyan science faculty rank first among liberal arts colleges in federal grants received, receiving more than twice as much funding as the next highest school, and also rank first in H-index, which measures both number of publications and the number of times those publications are cited. Wesleyan is committed to meeting 100 percent of demonstrated financial need of admitted students. Over 40 percent of Wesleyan students received grant financial aid during the 2011-12 academic year. 2012 Outlook Equaling the best start through 13 games in Wesleyan men s soccer history with a 10-0-3 record in 2011, the Cardinals cracked the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) top-25 rankings Sept. 27 and held as high as the #9 spot for three weeks (Oct. 11-25). Despite losses to Trinity to end the regular season and Middlebury in the first round of NESCAC tournament play, Wesleyan was rewarded for its great campaign with an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. It was the Cardinals fourth NCAA appearance in the last seven seasons. Wesleyan remained unbeaten in first-round NCAA action with a 1-0 decision over Misercordia before falling to regional host Rutgers-Camden, 2-1, in the next round, finishing the year 11-3-3. Under the leadership of 2012 team tri-captains Rory O Neill 13, Adam Purdy 13 and Cabell Maddux 13, Wesleyan has the makings of another NCAA qualifier with 14 lettermen and eight starters returning from the capable 2011 squad. Five of the other six lettermen started at least one game a year ago while the other played in 14 contests without a start. On paper, this is one of the deepest and most talented squads I ve had in my 14 years at Wesleyan, said Head Coach Geoff Wheeler. In addition, he described the incoming freshman group of 11 players as eager and in a position to help. O Neill was the most decorated Cardinal in 2011, capping his year with a second-team All-America nod from the NSCAA as well as a D3Soccer.com All-America honor. Earlier he had garnered first-team all-nescac and NSCAA first-team all-new England laurels. He led Wesleyan with seven goals and two assists for 16 points from his midfield spot. Evan Hazelett 13, one of the 11 seniors listed on the preseason roster, ranked second in scoring with five goals and three assists for 13 points. Walter Rodriguez 13 had 10 points with four goals and two assists. Wesleyan netted 23 goals a year ago and players who accounted for 20 of them are back for 2012. Defense was the key to the Cardinals success in 2011 and that centered around four-year starting keeper Purdy. Purdy was first-team all-nescac for the second time in his career, the first time coming in 2009 when he also earned All-America honors. In addition, Purdy was a second-team NSCAA all-new England choice in 2011 (he was first team in 2009). Playing every minute in net and yielding just 11 goals with 11 shutouts behind a 0.62 GAA and a.867 save percentage, Purdy was near-perfect through the opening 13 games as he was beaten just four times, two of those coming in the opening-day 3-2 overtime victory against Bowdoin, the team Wesleyan faces Sat., Sept. 8 in Brunswick, Me. to inaugurate the 2012 slate. Purdy has started all possible 52 games over the last three years with a career 0.74 GAA and a.843 save percentage. His 24 career shutouts is already a Wesleyan standard. Starters back on defense for the Cardinals in 2012 include Maddux, Ben Bratt 15 and Spencer Tanaka 15. Additional support will come from returnee Greg Shaheen 15. Joining O Neill in the midfield will be the returning talents of Ian Waldron 13, Chris Kuehn 13, Brock Barritt 15, Matt Hertgen 15, and Dan Issroff 15. Up front, Hazelett and Rodriguez will be aided by Noah Schlesinger 13 and Omar Bravo 15.

Wesleyan s Soccer Facilities Jackson Field Located across Wyllys Avenue from Andrus Field, Jackson Field has been the primary varsity playing field for men s and women s soccer as well as men s and women s lacrosse since the late 1970s. Women s lacrosse, however, relocated to Smith Field, the University s artificial-turf facility, in 2007. A picturesque setting for any athletic contest, Jackson Field is bordered by the 11-building Center for the Arts and is adjacent to the Stewart M. Reid House, which houses the college s admissions office. Called North Field for many years, the field was renamed Jackson Field at a dedication ceremony Oct. 21, 2006, to honor longtime men s soccer and lacrosse coach Terry Jackson, who retired in 1998 after more than 30 years at the University. Jackson is a member of Wesleyan s fourth induction class for its Athletics Hall of Fame. Smith Field Smith Field officially debuted with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 29, 2006. The lighted Polytan turf field is lined for lacrosse, field hockey and soccer and is used mainly for women s lacrosse during the spring and field hockey during the fall. Men s lacrosse also plays a number of its early-season games on the turf and both soccer teams have occasion to play on the turf during inclement weather situations. It is also occasionally used for football practice during inclement weather. In Smith Field has played host to numerous NESCAC and NCAA postseason contests, most recently a second-round NCAA men s soccer tournament game between Wesleyan and Western New England in 2009. The field is named in honor of major benefactor Warren Renney Smith 78 and his wife, Tiina. Andersen Fitness Center Part of the $13 million addition to the Freeman Athletic Center completed in January 2005, the Andersen Fitness Center occupies 7,500 square feet. With more than 100 state-of-the-art machines, including 10 elliptical trainers, 10 computerized bikes, six treadmills, six stairmasters, two ergs, one UBE, two Schwinn Airdyne Bikes, and 31 strength-training machines, the fitness center has a large stretching area, numerous free weight apparatuses, and a great TV and audio entertainment setup.

Coaching Staff Geoff Wheeler - Head Coach Seasons at Wesleyan: 14 (1999-pres.) Record at Wesleyan: 114-75-20 (.593) Career record: 114-75-20 (.593) Alma mater: Dartmouth 93 gwheeler@wesleyan.edu ~ (860) 685-2898 Geoff Wheeler joined the Wesleyan staff in 1999 and moves into his 14th season at the helm in 2012. His teams have developed into a conference, regional and national power, culminating in 2009 with an undefeated regular-season mark (10-0-4) and a third NCAA tournament bid in a five-year period. In 2011, the Cardinals nearly equaled that effort, going 10-0-3 over the first 13 contests before finishing up 11-3-3 with a fourth ever NCAA playoff spot. His teams made two consecutive appearances in the NESCAC tournament semi-finals in 2003 and 2004, then won the NESCAC title in 2005, leading to two straight NCAA tournament bids in 2005 and 2006. His 2007 troops set school marks for consecutive victories (10) and consecutive shutouts (5) while the 2009 squad established the school record for longest unbeaten streak (15 games) and most shutouts in a season (12). The 2010 Cardinals returned to the NESCAC semi-finals after upsetting Williams in the first round. Before arriving in Middletown, Geoff, who holds the rank of adjunct professor of physical education, spent two years as a Stanford University assistant coach in 1997 and 1998. He also enjoyed coaching stints at his alma mater, Dartmouth, as well as Middlesex School in Concord, Mass. A 1993 graduate of Dartmouth, Geoff was a four-year letterwinner in soccer, helping the squad qualify for the NCAA tournament twice as well as capture two Ivy League titles. A team captain in 1992, he earned all-ivy honors and led the team to the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament. Geoff continued his playing career in Zimbabwe before returning to the states to play for the Cape Cod Crusaders of the USISL. After he returned East from Stanford, he had times suiting up for both the Connecticut Wolves and the Boston Bulldogs of the A-League. Geoff currently holds his USSF A license, received an advanced national diploma from the NSCAA in 1998 and attended an NSCAA refresher course in 2006. He also is the director of the East Coast Soccer Academy, an overnight summer camp at Wesleyan aimed to attract top student-athletes interested in playing at NESCAC or Ivy League colleges. Geoff added regional U-17 ODP coaching to his repertoire in the summer of 2009. In addition to his soccer coaching duties, Geoff was an assistant men s squash coach at Wesleyan from 1999 through 2010, including one season as interim head coach, and earned a master s degree in liberal studies at Wesleyan in 2007. Coaching Staff Rob Stone - Asst. Coach (9th season) Joining the Wesleyan staff in 2004, Rob Stone, now in his ninth season, brings a wealth of coaching experience to the Cardinals. His 20 years at the Nichols School in Buffalo, N.Y., combined with a short stint at St. Lawrence University, make him an invaluable asset to the program. Rob played at St. Lawrence from 1972 to 1975, captaining the team in his senior year. In addition to earning his undergraduate degree from St. Lawrence, Rob also received an M.Ed. there in 1978. He then followed his passion for teaching and coaching by grooming high-school students for the college rigors in the classroom and on the field before joining the Wesleyan staff. He helped mold former two-year captain Padraig Hughes 03, a Nichols School graduate, into an all-nescac student-athlete. Rob holds an advanced national diploma from the NSCAA and a C License from the USSF. He started a youth soccer program in Lake George, N.Y., and has been involved with the Empire State games. In addition to his soccer duties at Wesleyan in the fall, Rob has assisted with the women s lacrosse squad during the spring the last six years and also assisted with Wesleyan s women s ice hockey team during the 2008-09 campaign. Joe Buckley - Assistant Coach (1st season) Distinguishing himself as a first-team all-nescac, first-team all-new England and all-ecac soccer standout at in-state rival Trinity College before graduating in 2012 with a degree in economics, Joe Buckley comes aboard the Cardinal coaching staff for the first time this fall. He also was a two-year soccer team captain for the Bantams. Joe gained his first coaching experience during the summer of 2012, assisting at the East Coast Soccer Academy at Wesleyan. Also a tremendous student at Trinity, Joe was named an National Soccer Coaches Association of America scholar All-American and was twice named academic all-nescac. Joe was a student worker in the registrar s office at Trinity throughout his undergraduate career and also served as a teaching assistant in an upper-level economics class. For three summers during his college years, Joe was a data analyst for Metso Automation in Shrewsbury, Mass. Mark Woodworth 94 - Asst. Coach (11th season) Mark Woodworth, a 1994 graduate of Wesleyan University, enters his tenth season as Wesleyan s head baseball coach and sub-varsity head coach for the men s soccer program. He is a part of a unique tradition as he is only the third baseball coach at the school in the last 70 years. Mark holds the rank of adjunct associate professor at the University. Mark is a native of Norwell, Mass., and a 1990 graduate of Norwell High School. He was a three-sport captain, earned All-South Shore League honors in baseball, soccer and basketball, and was named the South Shore League Small Athlete of the Year in 1990. Mark is married to the former Robin McLellan, a 1997 graduate of Wesleyan University. They have a four-year-old daughter, Lily Grace Woodworth, and a two-year-old son, Dylan Samuel Stiles Woodworth.

Recent All-Americans Jared Ashe 07 A two-sport standout (soccer and basketball) during his years in Middletown, Jared Ashe made an immediate impact as a freshman, tying for the team scoring lead with 13 points (five goals, three assists). He again tied for the team scoring lead in 2004 with 11 points (three goals, five assists) as Wesleyan posted a 9-6-1 season. As a junior, Ashe helped lead Wesleyan to its first NESCAC title and NCAA tournament appearance; following the season, he received second-team all-nescac honors for the second straight year. Ashe captained the 2006 squad that rolled to an 11-3-3 mark and returned to the NCAA tournament; his 90th-minute goal helped the Cardinals topple previously undefeated Middlebury 2-1 on the road. He was a first-team all-nescac honoree that season and received NSCAA second-team All-America laurels that year as well. Ashe was a member of the U.S. team that won the gold medal at the 2007 Pan American Maccabi Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina; incidentally, the team was coached by fellow Cardinal Amos Magee 93. Ashe is currently employed by Lazard Asset Management and had the opportunity to play at Chelsea s famed stadium, Stamford Bridge, during a May 2011 tournament in London. Adam Purdy 13 After a banner 2009 season, Adam Purdy became the first freshman ever to receive first-team all-nescac accolades; he was also named NESCAC Rookie of the Year. Purdy played all but 34 minutes in goal for the Cardinals that season, helping the Cardinals shatter the program record with 12 shutouts. Purdy allowed more than one goal in only three of the team s 19 games, one of which was a double-overtime affair. After surrendering a pair of goals in a 3-2 Cardinal victory at Western Connecticut, Purdy pitched five straight shutouts, blanking Bates, Middlebury, Amherst, Conn. College and Colby and playing over 560 minutes without allowing a score. He shut out St. Joseph s (Maine) in the Cardinals opening NCAA contest that year and saved a pair of penalty kicks against Western New England as the Cardinals advanced to the Round of 16 for the first time in program history. Purdy finished the year ranked first in the NESCAC in goals-against average (0.50), save percentage (.886) and shutouts (10); he received third-team All-America honors after the season, one of three Cardinals to be named All-America that season. He added first-team all-nescac honors in 2011 as well after posting a.867 save percentage and 0.62 GAA with 11 shutouts, bringing his career total of shutouts to a school-record 24. Woody Redpath 10 Also an ice hockey standout, Woody Redpath, who currently serves as an assistant coach, helped lead the men s soccer Cardinals to a cumulative 38-18-10 record and two trips to the NCAA tournament over his four years in Middletown. Redpath appeared in 46 of a possible 49 games over his final three years and started all 19 games in his senior season as the Cardinals enjoyed a 12-2-5 campaign and first-ever trip to the NCAA Round of 16. Redpath s efforts from his midfield spot were acknowledged in 2009, as he earned first-team all-nescac, firstteam all-new England, and second-team All-America laurels following the Cardinals banner year. Redpath was also selected to play in the annual New England Intercollegiate Soccer League senior all-star game, which was held in April 2010. On the ice, Redpath helped lead the 2006-07 Cardinals to their first-ever home NESCAC tournament contest, playing in 16 of 24 games that season, and later helped the 2008-09 squad defeat Colby for the first time in program history. For the 2010-11 and 2011-12 academic years, Redpath served as a intern in the athletic department and was an assistant coach in men s soccer.

Alumni Spotlight Kofi Appenteng 81 A native of Ghana who attended school in England, Kofi Appenteng started every game over four years for the men s soccer team, earning all-new England and All-America honors. In his senior season of 1980, he helped the Cardinals capture an ECAC New England Division III title with a 12-2 record. He also stood out on the track, specializing in the 440-yard dash, and was part of Wesleyan s New England Division III champion mile relay in 1981. Following Wesleyan, Kofi attended Columbia Law School and earned his law degree in 1984. He is a partner in the New York City law firm of Thacher Proffitt & Word and is a member of its Corporate and Financial Institutions Practice Group. He is the chairman of the board of the Africa-America Institute, which promotes enlightened engagement between Africa and America through education, training and dialogue. Consistent with that interest, Kofi is the co-founder of the West Africa Fund, a private equity fund focused on investing in the West African region. He also serves on the Ford Foundation Board of Trustees and has numerous civic commitments including the Council on Foreign Relations, the Community Service Society of New York and the University of Cape Town Fund. Kofi served on Wesleyan s Board of Trustees for the better part of 15 years between 1990 and 2006 and is now a Trustee Emeritus. He chaired the search committee that recommended Michael S. Roth as Wesleyan s 16th president in 2007. For that and many other contributions, he was awarded the Baldwin Medal, the highest honor bestowed by the Wesleyan Alumni Association for service to the University and to society. He was inducted into the Wesleyan Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009 as a member of its third class. Amos Magee 93 Amos Magee competed in professional soccer for 12 years (1993 2004), making him the Wesleyan graduate with the longest-standing playing career in professional sports. Spending a majority of his time with the Minnesota Thunder of the USL 1st Division (also known as the A-League), Amos racked up 64 goals and 39 assists to retire as the team s all-time leading scorer. He also had playing stints in major league soccer in 2000-01 with the Tampa Bay Mutiny and in 2001-02 with the Chicago Fire. Amos was twice honored during his Minnesota Thunder playing days, receiving first-team all-league recognition in 1998 and A-League Championship MVP laurels in 1999. He was inducted into the Minnesota Thunder Hall of Fame in 2005 and into the Wesleyan Athletics Hall of Fame in fall 2008 as part of its second class. A National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III All-American in 1992 and a four-time all-new England choice, Amos is Wesleyan s all-time scoring leader for both goals (35) and points (87). With his help, Wesleyan posted its finest record in team history: a 15-1-1 mark in 1991 and an ECAC New England Division III title. He played in the Maccabiah Games in Israel the year after his graduation as a member of the U.S. bronze-medal winning team. He returned to that venue as an assistant coach in 2005 when the U.S. captured a silver medal, then served as head coach of the U.S. Pan American Maccabi squad in 2007, leading his team to a gold medal in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Amos coached the Minnesota Thunder for two years (2006 08) after serving as a player/assistant coach in 2003-04 and then as assistant coach from 2004-06.
