Page 2 THE VOICE April 2010 Volume 1, Issue 2 PRESIDENT S CORNER Spring is finally here, and so is the energy and enthusiasm of your new Board of Directors. For the first time, three generations are represented. Incoming and outgoing BOD members met in March to review our mission and goals and develop strategies for a successful future. From that dialogue, a plethora of ideas emerged. Be prepared to be tapped as we begin new work groups for our future and the future of our community. Two of our service projects include a health clinic at St. Malachi s on Monday evenings and working with the Cleveland City Schools to improve the health of our kids. We need nurses and nurse practitioners to staff an additional 4 th Monday clinic at St. Malachi s. Contact Jeff Groth or Harriet Coeling if you can regularly attend the St. Malachi clinic. News about the Cleveland schools project will be forthcoming. Once again, we have the privilege of working with Cleveland Magazine (Great Lakes Publishing) for the Faces of Nursing supplement to June 2010 issue. In addition to recognizing the best graduating seniors from area colleges, the issue will focus on diversity within advanced practice nursing. Later in the year, we will participate in a celebratory event for nurses in the Cleveland area. In the meantime, I hope to see you on May 7 th at Windows on the River, for the annual Nurses Week luncheon. Best wishes, Carol Sams President June District Meeting ATTENTION 25+ YEAR MEMBERS The June GCNA District Meeting will be held on Tuesday June 8, 2010. This meeting traditionally recognizes and honors members with 25 years or more of membership. Any member that has 25 years or more of membership and has not been contacted by the GCNA office by May 22, 2010 should contact the office at 216-771-6922 or email us at gcna@clevelandnurse.org. GCNA MEMBERS JOIN CLEVELAND SCIENCE CENTER IN STUDENT CAREER DAY On February 23, 2010 GCNA participated in the Student Career Day at the Cleveland Science Center. Along with a number of area colleges and employers GCNA members shared experiences about how they became nurses and opportunities and rewards a career in nursing can provide. A number of area schools from Cuyahoga County attended. Topics discussed with students including area nursing schools, the diversity if opportunities available to nurses and the satisfaction of helping others. We would like to thank GCNA members Susan Cobb, Benitha Garrett and Kathryn Reinhardt for taking time out of their schedule and volunteering for this event. And a special thanks to Carlton Daniel, one of the featured nurses in the 2009 Cleveland Magazine Faces of Nursing supplement.

GCNA members Benitha Garrett and Susan Cobb explain the rewards of a nursing career to high school students at the Great Lakes Science Center on February 23, 2010 GCNA President Carol Sams leads the discussion with Board GCNA members Judy Beeler, Geri Pangrac, Meghan Zona, Jennifer Davis and Shirley Hemminger at the Board retreat on March 20, 2010

THE VOICE April 2010 Volume 1, Issue 2 Page 4 SAVE THE DATES JOIN GCNA IN THE DIGITAL AGE We all live very busy lives and find that we have to plan far ahead. In order to help you plan those events important to you we are providing a calendar of upcoming GCNA events for 2010: May 7 Nurses Day Luncheon June 8 GCNA Spring/Summer District Meeting October 13 GCNA Nursing Careers Unlimited Job Fair December 7 GCNA Fall/Winter District Meeting We will be providing an event calendar in every issue of the VOICE to keep you updated on upcoming events in the NE Ohio nursing community. If you would like an event listed please con- During the GCNA retreat in March one of the major topics discussed was our continued effort to move GCNA into the digital age. This includes a revision of our website, the construction of a GCNA Facebook page and probably most importantly expanded electronic distribution of the VOICE. Distributing the VOICE electronically via email has several major benefits. For the organization one of the big benefits is cost. If every member were able to receive an electronic copy we would have an additional $2,500-3,000 in our annual budget. In addition to cost savings an electronic VOICE allows us to communicate with members on a more frequent and timely basis. And an electronic version allows the inclusion of more color, graphics, internet links and photographs. We realize that at this time every member may not have access to a computer to receive the VOICE electronically but we are asking all members who are able to take advantage of an electronic VOICE to provide us with a current email address so you can start receiving the VOICE and VOICE updates immediately. Are you a Facebook fan? We are currently in the process of developing a Facebook page for GCNA but unfortunately some of us older folks are not well versed in this area. If you are a Facebook fan and would like to help out we could use your assistance in getting started. To help out just contact us via email or by calling 216-771-6922.
