JOB DESCRIPTION & PERSON SPECIFICATION Joint MBA Course Leader (Birkbeck, University of London and UAL) Accountable to Course Committee (50:50 at each institution) Contract Length: Permanent Hours/ FTE: 1.0 (2x0.5 roles) Weeks per year: 52 Salary: ca. 50,000 60,000 per annum inclusive of London Allowance College/ Service: Central Saint Martins, Culture and Enterprise Programme. Birkbeck, School of Business, Economics and informatics Grade: Individual contract commensurate with salary scale at each institution Location: CSM Granary Square King s Cross BBK - Malet Street, Bloomsbury Purpose of the role To be responsible for the vision and academic leadership of an innovative joint degree MBA course, reporting to the Programme Director (CSM) or Assistant Dean Management (BBK) including: the design, development and delivery of the curriculum Marketing of the joint programme to deliver to a niche market while growing the demand the maintenance and enhancement of standards the day to day management of the joint course and its delivery and development across both institutions all areas of learning, teaching and assessment of students course resource management observing and implementing the policies and procedures of both institutions in line within the terms of the joint course MOU Duties and Responsibilities In close consultation with key academic managers from CSM and Birkbeck, including Heads of Departments, Programme Director(s), Learning Technologist, Programme Lead Administrator, and Assistant and Associate Deans (key managers), as appropriate to: Academic Lead the vision for the joint course, set the agenda for its development and maintain and enhance the quality of its delivery Lead on the academic mission of the joint course, ensuring clarity of its collaborative identity, currency of subject agendas, relevance of learning methods and the fulfilment of appropriate standards at each level of study.
Build the relationship between CSM and Birkbeck and with relevant subject areas and courses across both institutions in consultation with Heads of Departments at both Colleges. Contribute to the academic mission of the CSM/Birkbeck collaboration and its implementation as a member of the relevant programme/department teams within which the MBA is situated. Quality Management and Enhancement Undertake the effective monitoring of the course, and lead enhancement activities in liaison with the key academic quality coordinators and managers at CSM and Birkbeck Lead on the process of joint course development, minor modifications, major changes, validation, revalidation and review (as defined in the MOU agreement) by CSM / Birkbeck, external agencies and professional bodies in liaison with the relevant key managers. Analyse data on student progression and achievement with a view to identifying issues and trends and formulating appropriate action in response. Chair the relevant Course Academic Forums in accordance with agreed policies and procedures. Contribute to the work of the academic committees of the College/s and Universities Curriculum Design, Content and Organisation Ensure that the curriculum is relevant, current and consistent with the mission of the CSM / Birkbeck collaboration and the vision for the course and the requirements of the award, including those of any professional accreditation bodies. Ensure that the delivery of the curriculum is organised in such a way as to be appropriate to the resources available and to the learning styles and developmental stages of the students concerned. Learning Teaching and Assessment Ensure that the learning, teaching and assessment methods employed on the Course are appropriate to the academic award, resources allocated, the demands of the subject, and the learning styles and developmental stages of the students in the context of the joint course structure. To develop and apply innovative and appropriate teaching techniques and materials that create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students To transfer knowledge including practical skills, methods and techniques To challenge thinking, foster debate, and develop the ability of students to engage in critical discourse and rational thinking Plan and manage the assessment process for the Degree, to comply with University policies and to ensure students are given constructive and timely feedback that helps them improve. Plan and manage Assessment Panels, Boards of Examiners and their subboards as appropriate in accordance with the joint Degree award requirements. Ensure prompt and effective responses are provided to assessment appeals by students within the Degree To ensure that the teaching content and methods of delivery are in accordance with equal opportunities; and respond to issues relating to staff and student needs
Undertake such teaching duties as are appropriate to the requirements of the course and consistent with your areas of expertise. Student Support and Guidance Ensure that students enrolled on the Degree are appropriately supported and provided with timely and constructive guidance for their academic development and pastoral care, fulfilling the policies and procedures of CSM and Birkbeck (as defined by the MOU) utilising appropriate channels and media. In Liaison with the Programme Lead Administrator and learning technologist ensure that information provided to students enrolled on the Degree is current, accessible and consistent, including: o Course promotional materials; o Course Handbooks; o Student timetables; o Unit, Project, assignment briefs; o Learning materials o Tutorial and consultation records; o Feedback on assessment (formative and summative) Contribute to information provided to students by CSM and Birkbeck (as defined by the MOU). Ensure effective liaison with, and organisation of student representatives for the course. Student Progression and Achievement In liaison with the Programme Lead Administrator and Programme Quality Coordinator, ensure that student records are maintained which are current, accurate and constructive, including: o Entry profiles o Attendance records o Achievement and progression o Support needs Be responsible for and lead the recruitment and selection processes applicable to the Course, ensuring the correct delivery of the both College Admissions Policy/ies. Management To lead and develop internal networks for example by chairing and participating in Colleges committees. To lead and develop external networks for example with external examiners and assessors. To develop links with external contacts such as other educational bodies, employers, and professional bodies to foster collaboration. To collaborate with others, in both Colleges, in marketing of the joint programme to deliver to a niche market while growing the demand Regular contact and liaison with students to teach and provide support. To provide academic leadership to those working within programme areas, as course leader or equivalent, coordinating the work of others to ensure that courses are delivered effectively, and/or organising the work of a team by agreeing objectives and work plans. To act as a line manager, supervising the work of others. To contribute to the development of teams and individuals through the appraisal system and providing advice on personal development. To act as a personal mentor to peers and colleagues.
To lead teams within specific areas of responsibility. To ensure that teams within the departments/colleges work together effectively. To act to resolve conflicts within and between teams. Student and staff counselling To be responsible for dealing with referred issues for students within own educational programmes. To act as personal tutor, giving first line support. To provide first line support for colleagues, referring them to sources of further help if required. Work with colleagues across CSM and Birkbeck to ensure the highest possible standards of student experience in terms of: Degree promotion (provision of material, contribution to open days and other recruitment activities on and off-site) Student progression Student recruitment Student induction Academic support Disability support (only in respect of signposting to students and staff how appropriate professional support can be accessed) Produce reports and management information as required Undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the role and in accordance with University policies and procedure. Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Promote a culture of enterprise within the Degree Team and amongst the student community In liaison with the Programme Director, Director of Innovation, Business & External Relations (IBER) and other stakeholders, lead on the development of business-related sponsorship and income generating opportunities and activities connected with the course/subject and research activities. Contribute to the income generating activities of CSM and Birkbeck, including the development of and active participation in fundraising activities. (as defined by the MOU). Research Undertake research and demonstrate an academic record, including an internationally excellent research standing, which gains and retains academic credibility within the partners academic communities. Demonstrable evidence of a clear publication plan for submission to future Research Excellence Framework. Professional Maintain your subject currency as part of own continuing professional development to ensure you maintain your position as a leader in your field, actively promoting and contributing to the professional and research profile of the Degree and Programme, as an individual and through research groups and / or consultancy projects. Lead on the maintenance and enhancement of the national and international
profile of the Degree and support and contribute to the Programme, College and University s external profile. Contribute positively to the development of the broader academic and cultural direction of CSM and Birkbeck as required.
