DURABILITY OF SEGMENTAL PAVEMENTS INTERLOCKING PAVERS, SUBJECTED TO VEHICULAR LOADS RELY ON SEVERAL KEY DETAILS: Paver shape - should be L or rectangular shape - w/ dentated sides are strongest for best long term lock up Paver laying pattern - herringbone pattern best - then running bond, brick pattern - least desirable is stack bond (try to avoid) Aspect ratio of paver - 4:1 aspect ratio, longest length to thickness, light duty vehicular ie. 80mm thickness x 4 = 320mm longest length - 3:1 aspect ratio, longest length to thickness, light duty vehicular i.e.. 80mm thickness x 3 = 240mm longest length
THE SOLUTION: WATER BALANCE CONTROL
PERMEABLE PAVEMENTS
PERMEABLE PAVEMENTS THE EVOLUTION. Stormwater Management Control -- Past emphasis was on flood control, today s emphasis is also on pollution Can Reduce Development Costs Eliminate Stormwater Fees / Reducing stress on sewer systems Increase Land Use Combining detention / retention of stormwater and can act as parking. Meet Municipal Pervious / Impervious Ratio Green and Sustainable Market Appeal Reduce Burden on Watersheds Reduce Stormwater utility fees Recharges Water Table and Ground Water Reduce downstream eroision, Filters Oils, Metals and other Nutrients Reduce Burden on Municipal Water Quality Reduce runoff temperatures Durable Material/ Lifecycle Cost Meets or exceeds ASTM C-936 High Strength - 8500+ psi Low Absorption - Maximum 5% Skid Resistance Acceptable for Plowing Low Maintenance & Ease of Repair High Quality & Exceptional Durability LEED Consideration Responsible Construction Practices & Cooler Cities TRIED, TESTED AND PROVEN THAT IT WORKS
Unilock Permeable Interlocking Concrete Paver Various aesthetically pleasing colors and textures, creative choices are not compromised by function. PICPs are the most durable of any porous pavement material and do so without changing the product composite. Unilock s minimum 8,500 psi, high-strength, no-slump concrete allows water to infiltrate between paver units instead of through the material. Open space between the various paver options range from 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch, not only meeting Americans with Disabilities Act recommendations for permeable pavements but also allowing a minimum of 100 inches per hour of surface infiltration SETTING Bed Aggregate ASTM No. 8 1/4 inch (2-5 mm) crushed, angular, chip stone, not sand Provides a smooth leveling course for placing pavers and additional structural interlock of the PICPs. Setting bed aggregate allows for rapid water infiltration with over 500 inches per hour through the 40 percent void-space. Sand must be avoided as a setting bed in a PICP application. BASE Aggregate ASTM No. 57 (3/4 Clear) can be used without ASTM No. 2 subbase aggregate Minimum thickness must be determined by sufficiently supporting anticipated loads & accommodating stormwater detention in the 40 percent void-space of the material. A minimum thickness of 4 inches, serves as a transition material between the ASTM No. 8 setting bed and the ASTM No. 2 subbase aggregate. T infiltration rate of the ASTM No. 57 is over 500 inches per hour. SUBBASE Aggregate ASTM No. 2 Subsoil conditions will dictate the necessity of this larger ASTM No. 2 Installation of such material will provide increased structural stability on sites with poor soil conditions. A minimum thickness of 8 inches is required for effective performance. ASTM No. 2 subbase aggregate temporarily detains stormwater runoff in the 40 percent void-space of the material. Has an infiltration rate of over 500 inches per hour.
JOINT Aggregate ASTM No. 8 As the initial filtering layer, the 1/4 inch (2-5 mm) crushed, angular, chip stone captures approximately 80 percent of debris in the first 1 to 2 inches. The secondary function of the joint aggregate is to increase the positive interlock between the paver units that is essential to the structural stability of the PICPs. The joint aggregate must always remain filled to the lip of the PICP units to reduce unnecessary clogging.

LARGE PERMEABLE PARKING Traditional parking lot design 44 inlets/cb over 3,000 linear feet of RCP 73,100 cubic feet underground storage tank approx. $2 million in underground infrastructure Courtesy of Site Design Group/EDI
LARGE PERMEABLE PARKING Permeable paver parking lot design no inlets no RCP or underdrain no underground storage tank up to 7 per hour of infiltration into subgrade 15% savings vs. traditional Courtesy of Site Design Group
LARGE PERMEABLE PARKING Storage capacity: 265,000 sf of paving x 14 of base aggregate x 40% aggregate void space = 123,667 cu.ft. storage ~ 73,100 cu.ft. required +50,567 cu.ft. surplus storage
MAINTENANCE Customized features allowing for configuration to equipment for unique applications Suited for Municipalities, Contractors and General Maintenance Will evacuate joint material and can also replenish removed joint material to lip of paver
PERMEABLE PAVEMENT MAINTENANCE GUIDE & PROGRAM. **COMING SOON** How to address:
Additional TRCA comments on winter performance There was some concern that ice formation within the permeable pavement base course layer would inhibit or delay infiltration when the first rain occurred after an extended cold spell, potentially causing excessive buildup of water in the base course, eventually leading to flow over the surface. This did not occur. The permeable pavement continued to function normally during winter rain events, with minor amounts of infiltrate measured even during very cold periods. Winter data show permeable pavement functioning well during the winter. The base course layer remained 8EC warmer than the air temperature on average, and continued to function as an effective storage unit even during sub-freezing temperatures. The first rainfall event after an extended cold period infiltrated well through the subsoils.
