Pervious Pavers By: Rich Lahren Hebron Brick & Block Supply
Stormwater Management and Control Issues Past emphasis was on flood control Today s emphasis is also on pollution More impermeable areas are increasing stormwater runoff Increased runoff is significantly degrading water quality
Stormwater Management and Control Issues EPA stormwater and runoff mandates Governing agencies are using a variety of regulatory requirements to control problems associated with runoff and meet EPA standards
Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan Required by EPA.s Construction General Permit. Main Components: Erosion and Sediment Control (during construction) Good Housekeeping (during construction) Stormwater Controls (during & after construction)
Stormwater Management and Control Issues For runoff control, one of four management objectives is generally required: Capture or infiltrate the entire stormwater volume so there is zero discharge from the drainage area Infiltrate a fixed volume of runoff from every storm Infiltrate the increased runoff generated by development and impervious surfaces Infiltrate sufficient water to control peak rate of discharge
Traditional On-Site Retention The traditional requirement of on-site retention, such as holding ponds, weirs, or basins, cover large areas of valuable property, are costly to maintain, and can be potentially dangerous Critics of uniform on-site detention emphasize the importance of infiltration as a natural way to handle stormwater runoff
Traditional Pavements Virtually Impervious Asphalt, Portland Cement Concrete and Solid Concrete Pavers Contribute to Increased Stormwater Runoff Negative Contribution to Water Quality Limited Ability to Assimilate Contaminants

The New Alternative to impermeable pavements
What are Pervious or Permeable Pavers? Permeable Pavers are a paving alternative to more traditional types of hardscape flooring materials, where water is allowed to filtrate through the surface to the underlying soils. Permeable pavers permit rain water to be absorbed by the ground underneath, while still managing to provide a stable enough surface for vehicles.
Benefits of Permeable Pavers Increase in water quality Increase in quantity of quality water Reduce installation costs of drainage system Reduces stormwater runoff Reduces flooding Reduces erosion caused by flooding Preserves our stream beds and river banks
Commercial Parking Lots
Residential Driveways
Features of the Permeable Paving System Uses natural infiltration of rainwater to reduce or eliminate runoff Maximizes groundwater recharge Reduces potential for downstream flooding and mitigates pollution impact on surrounding surface waters Reduces runoff temperatures
Features of the Permeable Paving System Reduces or eliminates peak flows and runoff volumes Treats.first flush. of stormwater runoff Addresses both water quality and quantity issues Combines detention and parking
Features of the Permeable Paving System Manufactured to the same ASTM C-936.Standard Specification for Solid Concrete Interlocking Paving Units. as traditional concrete pavers Possesses same strength, aesthetics, durability & performance characteristics
Cost Benefits of the Permeable Paving System Allows better land-use planning May reduce or eliminate drainage and retention systems required by impermeable pavements May reduce cost of compliance with many stormwater regulations
Pollutant Removal Mechanisms Filtration of Solids (TSS) Oxidation Cooling Bio-chemical Reactions Adsorption and Absorption Collect for Treatment " Salts " Heavy Metals
Design Applications Can be designed to accommodate a wide variety of stormwater management objectives: Capture and infiltrate entire stormwater volume = zero discharge Infiltrate the increased runoff generated by development and impervious surfaces Infiltrate a fixed volume of runoff from every storm Infiltrate sufficient water to control the peak rate of discharge
Permeable Pavement Design Permeable interlocking concrete pavements require greater initial site evaluation and design effort They require a greater level of construction skill, inspection oversight during construction and after installation, and attention to detail A qualified, professional engineer with experience in hydrology and hydraulics should be consulted for permeable pavement applications
Factors Affecting Permeability Aggregate Material Used for Base and Sub base Construction Methods Environmental Conditions and Existing Sub grade Hydraulic Design Slope Type and Size of Aggregate Material Used To Fill Drainage Voids
Maintenance of Permeable Pavers Fine debris may accumulate in the drainage void aggregate material over time, reducing the flow capacity Testing has shown it is possible to regenerate areas with reduced infiltration rates It is recommended that permeable pavements be inspected and cleaned at regular intervals to ensure optimum performance - depending on traffic levels, cleaning with vacuum sweepers may be needed from a few times per year to every 3 or 4 years
