In addition, you will be working in the hospital on various specialty units and in a rehab center. Opportunities to work in a Physical therapy facility as well as in the Humane Society Hospital are additional options. Those who would prefer to work indirectly in patient care may take the Unit clerk program, and participate in the accompanying hospital clinical. You will be trained in advanced patient care skills at the PCA level of nursing. Skills include; EKG, diabetic care, basic lab skills, sterile wound care, home care, etc. Continuation of Medical Terminology, as well as Pathophysiology will be taught. 1

TECH Prep College Information: Our program has articulation agreements with numerous colleges in Michigan. You have the ability to earn college credit for the program. To be approved for credit hours, you must maintain a B average in Health Occupations, and pass all core curriculums. Credits range from 3-7 credit hours depending on the institution you attend. Contact the college for the articulation credits that have been approved. VI. COURSE OUTLINE/ASSIGNMENTS Self Management Skills I. Students will improve in Self Management Skills. A. The student will gain a better understanding of the causes and symptoms of Stress B. The student will learn methods and techniques to improve their ability to cope with stress C. The student will learn how to understand and manage aggression, resentment and anger, in order to respond appropriately in confrontational situations II. Student will learn positive character traits necessary to become a responsible, ethical adults. III. Students will learn the skills necessary for gainful employment expected in the workplace. A. The student will learn effective communication skills and ethical behaviors expected in the workplace B. The student will learn how to present a positive self image, work attitudes and good work habits necessary for maintaining employment IV. Students will continue to work on the 12 Body Systems, Pathophysiology and Medical Terminology V. Students will complete additional unit work in Allied Health areas VII. CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION Type of Performance 1. Students will complete a Stress Assessment and practice Stress Management techniques 2. Create a 5 minute presentation that demonstrates traits necessary to function as a positive productive individual 3. Demonstrate appropriate Manners 4. Completion of a Resume, Cover letter and Follow-up letter 5. Completion of Unit Modules 6. Skill Performance in Nursing skills, Physical Therapy Skills, Lab skills, EKG, First Aid and CPR skills 7. Evaluation of Tests, Quizzes and Presentations 4

Student Conduct Professionalism is required due to the delicacy of the subject material. Under no circumstances will foul language be allowed. Common rules of courtesy are required towards the instructors, as well as your peers or disciplinary actions will be taken. Insubordination will not be tolerated under any circumstance! Thefts of books, equipment or other student belongings, and any abuse of equipment, will result in a suspension and/or removal from the program. Any physical abuse, verbal or mental abuse of elderly residents will result in disciplinary action and reporting to Adult Protective Services for review, and possible criminal prosecution. All students and a parent must sign a document stating that no felony charges are in your history as a minor. This is a state mandate for all health careers programs. The document will accompany this Syllabus. You are to arrive ON TIME to class. Wayne-Westland Policies will be followed and include suspension followed by removal from the program. See Student Handbook. Absences should be called in to my office as well as your own Attendance Office. My number is: 419-2136. Please note: District Attendance Policies will be enforced. Any missed tests/assignments resulting from an absence must be made up after school within 1 week or the graded assignment/test becomes an E. Pop Quizzes on days where an absence has occurred cannot be made up **Students with 2 or less absences for the Semester will receive bonus points for the Midterm and Final Exam. However, missing class on the day of the Midterm or Final exam will cause you to receive and E for the Exam Grade regardless of attendance. EMPLOYABILITY GRADES Weekly Employability Skills grades will be included in your overall grade. The following guide is for your reference: 2 absences, Employability grade is an A 4 absences, maximum weekly Employability grade is a B 6 absences, maximum weekly Employability grade is a C 7 absences, maximum weekly Employability grade is a D 8 or more absences, the weekly grade is an E 5

Dress Code: Approved scrub uniforms are required to practice skills and for Clinical and Tours White shoes are required. (May be tennis shoes as long as they are not Canvas) 1 pair of stud earrings only with your uniform. All others must be removed. No jewelry with your uniform, except a watch. No wild colored hair/do s No excessive make-up No perfume Long nails and nail polish are not permitted, as they are a safety and health hazard. Nails must be cut and filed so that they are not seen beyond the fingertips Tongue rings, eyebrow rings and rings in the nose will be taken out or you forfeit the right to attend Clinical Grading Policy: Tests and Quizzes - 45% Skills - 45% Weekly Employability Sheets - 10% Grading System: 90-100 A 80-89 B 70-79 C 60-69 D On exam days, No test will be administered to those persons who have not completed their Unit work. Make-up exams must be made after school. **More than 2 absences during the Clinical portion of the course will result in removal from Clinical and you will receive and E for the Term. In addition, the student will forfeit their Certificate of Completion for the program at year-end. You will not be allowed to continue on into Health Occupations II. **Should a student be removed from the nursing component and transferred to other areas because of poor performance, the student will receive a D for their Term grade, and will not be allowed to schedule himself or herself into Health Occupations II. Semester Grades: 30% First Card Marking 30% Third Card Marking 30% Second Card Marking 10% Semester/Final Exam Lab/Clinical Skills A Competency Grade will be given for each skill taught. Practice the skills for long- term retention. You will be tested only once on the skill, so come prepared for testing off with the instructors. Levels are as follows: 4 - student is competent enough to teach/demonstrate to others the task (95%) 3 - student can perform the task without assistance (85%) 2 - student can perform the task with minimal assistance (75%) 1 - student practiced but did not test off on the task taught (60%) 6

CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION No Certificate of Completion will be issued to anyone with less than a C average and/or less than 70% of skills at a level 2. *Anyone with more than 12 absences for the year will forfeit their Certificate of Completion. Nursing Assistant Competency Exams Nursing Assistant Competencies will be on a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory basis, according to OBRA s Michigan Model 1991. A student must achieve satisfactory status on all skills to qualify for State Nurse Assistant Exams. OBRA core curriculum tests must be passed with 80% accuracy. If a Core Exam is failed, you have 2 weeks to complete the exam. **In order to take the second year program Core must be passed. No make up exams will be given at the end of the year. Clinical skills as stated under Clinical guidelines must in addition meet 100% proficiency in the nursing skills to meet State Requirements. A minimum of 24 hours of clinical practice is required. Cost of the CNA Exam is approximately $178.00, and will be reimbursed to you when employment is secured in a nursing facility. You must notify your employer so that the paper work to the State can be processed for reimbursement. Information will be distributed to you in the Spring. There are 2 parts to the exam: a skills test and a written exam. You must pass the skills portion before you can take the written test. **Please note: All students who pass the 2 Sections of the CNA Exam will be filed on the State Registry in Michigan. Nursing homes who hire you will check this State Registry to verify your status. Should any abuse of patients occur by you, the facility will notify the State, and your name will be red flagged on the Registry. You will then not be allowed to work as a nursing assistant. Optional Certification: Patient Care Assisting Competency Exam Exam Fee: $90.00 Given in the Spring HOSA All students will be strongly encouraged to join HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America). Should you choose not to participate in HOSA, you will be required to prepare a term paper which must be turned in prior to competition. Dues $20.00/year 7

HOSA, con t. We are a service-oriented profession. Students will be asked to participate in at least 1 Community Service project this year. Fund-raisers are necessary to fund the various competitions in the Spring. All HOSA members will be asked to participate. If you choose not to fundraise and qualify for the State Leadership Conference, you will be assessed $100.00 in order to participate, as it costs over $450.00 to send a student to the conference. Student Competition: As members of HOSA, students will be asked to compete at Regional Competition, or write a Term Paper in place of the event. Only Medal winners move on to the next level of competition. Medal winners earn the right to compete, but may not necessarily be allowed to compete if they do not maintain a C average in class and have less than 8 absences at time of registration. They must be in good standing with attendance at the career center as well as at their home school. In addition, no students who have been suspended may compete at the State Conference. It will be left to advisor permission to compete at the State and National levels. REQUIREMENTS FOR STATE AND NATIONAL HOSA LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE: Participation in one HOSA Sponsored Community Service Project is required. HOSA Dues must be paid by the student. No student will participate in HOSA at State or National levels unless they are in good standing in the classroom. Good standing includes: student must maintain a C grade point or higher, must not have more than 8 absences at time of conference, and must not have any suspensions that are a result of verbal or physical assaults. Student conduct in the classroom will also be taken into consideration. The State HOSA Leadership Conference is not a right but a privilege. Professional behavior should be maintained during class time. Ultimately, the privilege to attend the State HOSA Leadership Conference is at the discretion of the teacher. Additional Requirement in the Program Current Physical Exam by October 1, 2014. Proof of a Negative PPD TB skin test, or a negative Chest X-Ray by October 1, 2014.
