2 2 COURSE DESCRIPTION: Medicaid Nurse Aide (MNA 100) PSD (1 credit) Specific knowledge and skills for students and/or nurse aides to assume the role and responsibility required in long-term care is communicated to the student through lectures, lab, and clinical practice. The focus of the course is communication, infection control, safety, residents rights, and basic nursing skills. Co-requisites: must take in conjunction with Practicum HEA 197. Practicum (HEA 197) PSD (1 credit) The practicum provides supervised on-the-job work experience related to the students education objectives. Students participating in the practicum do not receive compensation. Co-requisites: must take in conjunction with Medicaid Nurse Aide (MNA 100). *****NOTE: This is 2 courses. Completion of the MNA portion of the course is followed by the Practicum portion of the course. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course the student will with 70% accuracy, be able to: 1. Demonstrate good personal habits 2. Recognize the nurse aide s role in organizational structure of the nursing facility 3. Identify responsibilities of the nurse aide to the resident and health care team 4. Demonstrate basic skills and techniques in performing uncomplicated nursing procedures according to the program standards. 5. Organize and administer nursing care to residents based on a plan of care and direction from charge personnel. 6. Demonstrate knowledge of resident s rights in assisting residents with their activities of daily living. 7. Demonstrate ability to assist residents in attaining and maintaining functional independence to the extent possible 8. Demonstrate proper care for and use of equipment and supplies necessary for resident care. 9. Demonstrate sensitivity to the residents physical, emotional, social and mental health needs through skillful, directed interactions. a. Actively participate in the maintenance of a non-threatening, independence conducive environment for the nursing facility resident. Admission Requirements 1. The applicant must be at least 18 years of age. 16 or 17 years old applicants must have a parental consent signed. 2. Must present an approved photo ID and a non-laminated Social Security Card.

3 3 3. Must be in good physical and mental health. Must be able to lift push and pull 50 lbs, and able to stand for 3 hours. Must be able to assist with lifting, transferring and turning patients. 4. Copy of valid drivers license 5. Must have had a TB skin test within one year of onset clinical date. If skin test was positive, must have a chest x-ray. 6. Must submit a record of all immunizations (including Hep B records) prior to onset clinical date. 7. Must pass a nurse aide abuse check before class. Administrator determines acceptance. 8. Must maintain liability insurance (purchased through RATC) for clinicals. Expenses to Expect (other expenses may apply) 1. Insurance fee 2. 2 sets uniforms 3. White shoes (tennis shoes with only white- no crocks/clogs) 4. State testing fee 5. Cost of obtaining required skin tests and immunizations Classroom Expectations 1. Students will begin working on assignment posted on the blackboard upon entering the classroom. 2. Students will be expected to maintain a notebook with daily work and handouts. This work shall be submitted for review upon the request of the instructor and will be included in with class participation score. 3. Students will actively and constructively participate in and contribute to class discussions and activities. 4. Students will abide by Health Sciences Rules as listed on the attached document. 5. Keep a journal on clinical experiences (this will be a double entry journal). 6. Wear name badge at all times when in clinical. Student Conduct All students must conduct themselves professionally whether in the classroom, lab or clinical setting. Student will be terminated from the program if there is documented and substantial evidence of resident neglect, abuse or misappropriation of resident property. These individuals will be placed on the abuse registry maintained by the Department. There will be no re-entrance for those students dismissed for unsatisfactory conduct.

4 4 Course Requirement/Attendance It is mandatory that students attend all 75 hours of the MNA 100 training program. Students are expected to attend all classes regularly and promptly. It is the student s responsibility to know and comply with the instructor s policy and to contact the instructor to make up missed work. Students must complete this course with a minimum grade of 70% (letter grade C). Students are expected to attend all scheduled classes, read all assigned lessons, and complete all written assignments. If you are absent for any reason, you are required To call prior to the start of the class day. Absence is defined as missing as much as one hour of class/clinical. Two (2) episodes of tardiness or leaving early will count as an absence. For absences in the excess of 2, the following guidelines are used. For the third absence, there will be 5 points taken from the students final grade. A fourth absence may prevent the student from completing the course. Attendance of clinicals is mandatory for completion of the course. Late Work & Make Up When absent the student is responsible for all material missed. If an exam is scheduled on the day you return to class you are expected to take it on that day. If an exam was given during the student s absence he/she is expected to take the exam on the first day back at school or at the convenience of the instructor. It is the students responsibility to contact the instructor to schedule the test time and place. FAILURE TO CALL IN AN ABSENCE ON THE DAY OF A SCHEDULED EXAM WILL RESULT IN A GRADE OF ZERO ON ANY TEST/QUIZ GIVEN THAT DAY. If you are absent, you are expected to read all material covered, do corresponding workbook chapters, and see any films missed. Failure to do make-up work within 2 class days after the absence will cause five (5) points to be deducted from your final grade. Make-up work is very important for successful completion of the course. Grading 7 exams and 2 quizzes (average counts as 1 exam) will be given and the average of those 8 grades will be the final course grade. All clinical performance objectives must be met in order to achieve a passing grade. They are graded pass or fail. ***In order to be placed on the KY Medicaid Nurse Aide Registry, the student must pass both a written and skill performance state exam. The test fee is $20.00 (certified check or money order) and must be paid at the time of testing. EVALUATION OF STUDENTS PERFORMANCE: 1. TESTS AVERAGE 70% 3. CLASS PARTICIPATION 30%

5 5 4. CLINICAL PERFORMANCE pass/fail All tests during the semester will carry equal weight. A grade of a C (70%) or above on every test will be required to be able to take the state MNA exam. Grading Scale: A B C D Below 60 F Your attendance, class participation and attitude will affect your grade in this class. This instructor has the right to make changes in the grade requirements and their weights in determining the final grade. Class participation will be graded on the following criteria: At the beginning of each class you will be credited with 5 points. One point will be deducted for each of the below behaviors that you fail to meet. CLASS PARTICIPATION RUBRIC 1. Arrive & leave on time 1 point 2. Come prepared for class 1 point 3. Remain alert throughout class 1 point 4. Display positive attitude 1 point 5. Constructively contribute to class discussions and activities 1 point Standards of Progress 5 points The student shall pass all written or oral exams throughout the course with an average score of 70% or above to be eligible for the final examination. Upon successful completion of the 75 hour nurse aide training program, the instructor will advise the Regional Kentucky Technical School, Department for Technical Educators, of those students who are eligible to take the competency exam. After successful completion of the competency exam, the students name shall be placed on a state registry.

6 6 All training and testing records will be maintained for 5 years and are available upon request. No credit will be granted for previous training. MNA DRESS AND BEHAVIOR CODES ALL STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO BE CLEAN, NEAT, AND MODESTLY DRESSED AT ALL TIMES. HAIR: Should be neatly styled and secured away from the face with long hair off the collar. Males who wear a beard should keep it clean and neatly trimmed to ½ to 1 inch in length. UNIFORMS: A navy colored scrub uniform is required. Under garments should be either white or beige/nude colored. Shoes are to be all white leather, enclosed and kept clean and polished. JEWELRY: Jewelry is to be kept to a minimum so that it will not interfere with patient care, infection control or your personal safety. Earrings are limited to 1 pair and must be posts/studs rather than hoops or dangling styles and worn only in the lobe of the ear. Body piercing is considered inappropriate for clinical practice and is not allowed. Tattoos are to be covered. DUE TO ALLERGIES OF CLASSMATES, INSTRUCTORS, CLIENTS, PLEASE REFRAIN FROM USING AN EXCESS OF PERFUMED PRODUCTS. ***IMPORTANT 1. Breeches of confidentiality will result in dismissal from the course and college. 2. Profanity or vulgar language is not tolerated. 3. Be prepared to work and be on time to all class/clinical sessions. 4. Remember that you are a guest in the facility and politeness to faculty, staff, patients and their family members is a must.

7 7 Nurse Aide Training Will Include Basic Nursing Skills Taking and recording vital signs Caring for the residents' environment Recognizing abnormal signs and symptoms of common diseases and conditions Personal Care Skills Bathing, grooming, dressing and toileting, assisting with eating and hydration, and skin care. Mental Health and Social Service Needs Identifying developments tasks associated with the aging process. Behavior management Assisting the resident in preserving dignity Care of Cognitively Impaired Residents Communicating and understating the behavior of the cognitively impaired. Basic Restorative Services Use of assistance devices in transferring, ambulation, eating and dressing Maintenance of range of motion Bowel and bladder training Resident Rights Providing privacy and maintenance of confidentiality

8 8 Course Follow-Up After successful completion of the Nurse Aide Training course the student will be scheduled by the Center to take the State Competency Evaluation. The Kentucky Community and Technical College System has responsibility for the final written or oral examination and the skills demonstration aspect of the competency evaluation. The cost of the examination is $20 (cost may change) in the form of a certified check or money order and is payable to the testing center at the end of the course. Within 30 days of satisfactory completion of the competency evaluation, KCTCS shall forward to the Kentucky Nurse Aide Registry, the name and social security number, address and test date of students who have successfully completed the competency evaluation. The Kentucky Board of Nursing shall maintain, on the registry the name of each student who has successfully completed the competency evaluation. Clinicals: Russellville Area Career and Technology Center completes the 16 hour clinical portion of the MNA 100 course and the entire portion of the HEA 197 course at Creekwood Health and Rehab Center. Creekwood Health and Rehab Center serves the resident's needs through multiple levels of care including skilled and traditional care as well as hospice and Alzheimer's care. The Creekwood staff is very supportive of the student MNA's during their clinical days. The staff provides consistent nursing care to the residents. It is the perfect setting for the student to begin their training. It is a privilege for us to have our clinicals at Creekwood. ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY (NO CHEATING POLICY): Students are expected to uphold the school's standard of conduct relating to academic honesty. Students assume full responsibility for the content and integrity of the academic work they submit. The guiding principle of academic integrity shall be that a

9 9 student's submitted work, examinations, reports, and projects must be that of the student's own work. Students shall be guilty of violating the honor code if they: 1. Represent the work of others as their own. 2. Use or obtain unauthorized assistance in any academic work. 3. Give unauthorized assistance to other students. 4. Modify, without instructor approval, an examination, paper, record, or report for the purpose of obtaining additional credit. 5. Misrepresent the content of submitted work. Rubric for Journal Entries Journal entries reflect individual s thoughts and feelings concerning clinical experience. The entries are thorough, demonstrating introspective thought and connections with previous biopsychosocial concepts. The entries cover this content in reasonable detail, though they may lack connections to previous biopsychosocial concepts. Journal entries are terse and lack applied biopsychosocial concepts. 11 11 Russellville ATC Health Science Rules Laboratory/Equipment 1. Always keep equipment in its designated place. 2. Replace and clean all equipment after use. 3. Report any damaged equipment to the instructor. 4. Do not attempt to use any intricate equipment until cleared to do so by the instructor. 5. The beds in the labs are for teaching purposes ONLY. 6. No eating in the laboratory. 7. Keep the linens folded and off the floor when in use in the lab. Classroom/Laboratory 1. No pushing, running, or rough housing in the classroom or laboratory. 2. Housekeeping in Health Sciences is taken care of within the department. Each student shall be on the Housekeeping Committee during the year. Each student is responsible for cleaning up his/her own breakage, spillage, etc. 3. Do not enter other classrooms at any time. 4. Tardiness is occasionally understandable, Chronic, habitual tardiness is not. Be on time. 5. The telephone in the Health Sciences Classroom is part of the main school line and may not be used by students except in the case of an emergency. 6. Bring your books, pencil, notebook and paper to class every day. 7. No smoking or use of tobacco of any kind. 8. In regard to work missed, you are responsible for everything said and done in class. Tests will include material discussed in class even though it may not be found in the textbook. In the event of extended illness, every effort will be made to help you keep up and/or catch up. Should a student need to make up work, it must be done after school and at the convenience of the instructor. Students may not bring in work late and expect to receive full credit for it. 9. NO BUM CHEWING. 10. Classroom activities and laboratory activities are dismissed by the Health Sciences teacher. 11. NO CELL PHONES, IPODS, OR ANY OTHER ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION DEVICES are to be used in the Health Sciences classroom or laboratory. They will be collected by the teacher. Breaks/Concessions 1. Concession machines are located at the RATC for your enjoyment during break. Please see that all wrappers, bags, cans, and tab pops are put in the designated areas when you are finished with them. Please keep the rooms, halls and campus clean. Abuse of the concession machines will result in their being unplugged. 2. YOU MUST TAKE CARE OF BATHROOM AND SODAS BEFORE CLASS BEGINS. Safety 1. Observe safety rules in classroom, laboratory, and on this campus. When at clinical affiliations, the safety rules of the individual clinical institutions must be followed.
