1 Collin College Division of Health Sciences and Emergency Services AAS in Surgical Technology Surgical Technology Program Admission Packet Overview Thank you for your interest in the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Surgical Technology at Collin College. This packet provides information regarding admission procedures and required courses. This admission packet has been designed to answer questions about the program and provide the Program Application Form. The Deadline for submitting an application for admission to the Summer Semester class is 5:00 PM, on the Second Friday of April. Applications may be hand delivered to suite B304, Central Park Campus in McKinney, Texas; or mailed to: Surgical Technology Program Director, 2200 W. University Drive, PO Box 8001, McKinney, Texas, The AAS in Surgical Technology is a one year program that begins in the summer semester. Classes are scheduled only on the Central Park Campus in McKinney, Texas, and are scheduled during the summer, fall and spring semester. Enrollment is limited and competitive. Admission to Collin College does not guarantee admission to the Surgical Technology Program. Upon successful completion of the program the student is awarded an Associate of Applied Science and is eligible to sit for the national certification exam. Accreditation The Surgical Technology program operates under the standards of the Accreditation Review Committee on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC-STSA), 6 West Dry Creek, Suite 110, Littleton, CO , (303) The program follows the Core Curriculum for Surgical Technology, 5th Edition as established by the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST). The Collin College Surgical Technology program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP),1361 Park Street, Clearwater, FL 33756, Phone: Graduates of this program are entitled to an Associate of Applied Science degree and are eligible to sit for the national certification examination administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). Those students passing the certification exam are allowed to use the title Certified Surgical Technologist.
2 For more information please visit: ARC-STSA website: CAAHEP website: AST website: Curriculum Admission to the AAS in Surgical Technology Program requires completion of semester credit hours of prerequisites: All general core courses with the exception of Microbiology. These courses must be completed with a passing grade of C or above. Once admitted, students complete 35 semester credit hours in prescribed courses. Both general education and specialty courses may have defined prerequisites set by either the college or the program. Progression in the Program requires passing specialty courses with a C or better. Students are advised to consult the website ( ) for the Curriculum Plan. Admission Criteria Admission to the Surgical Technology program is on a competitive basis. Applicants will be awarded points based on specific admission criteria, as outlined in this packet. Applicants will be ranked and selected based on the number of points earned. Individuals with competitive points will be invited for an interview with the Surgical Technology director. Currently the program accepts up to 24 students every summer semester depending on the availability of clinical sites. Specific admission requirements include: 1. Submission of a completed college admission application. Students should be aware that admission to the college does not guarantee admission to the Surgical Technology Program. Applications for the Surgical Technology Program will not be considered from students who have not completed a college admission application. 2. Submission of GED Certificate or high school transcript noting graduation. 3. Overall GPA of 2.5 from all college courses completed and applicable to the surgical technology degree plan. Official transcripts reflecting all college courses completed must be submitted to the Director of the Surgical Technology Program. 4. Completed and signed Surgical Technology Program Application Form by the deadline specified: 5:00 PM, on the Second Friday of April. 5. Completion of the pre-entrance courses with a grade of C or above and a cumulative prerequisite course GPA of 2.5. If prerequisite courses are being completed during the spring preceding admission and students are otherwise qualified, students will automatically receive conditional acceptance pending completion of prerequisites with a cumulative prerequisite GPA of Must be eligible for placement in MATH 0310 at Collin College OR have taken college algebra or higher within the past five years of the application date.
3 7. Completion of the PSB for Health Occupations Examination prior to the deadline for application. 8. Fulfill TSI requirements or be exempt (See academic advisors for more information.) 9. Submit a handwritten, well-developed, one to two page essay discussing why surgical technology has been selected as a career choice and why attendance at the Collin College program is desired. Submit this essay with your application form. 10. Request two letters of reference from employers or teachers (not friends or family) that can attest to your character and aptitude in a healthcare career. These letters should be directly mailed by whomever writes them to: Attn: Surgical Technology Program Collin College, Central Park Campus 2200 W. University Dr. McKinney, Texas, Once admitted to the program: 1. Be in good health and furnish physical examination and eye examination records. Forms will be provided by the Surgical Technology Program once the student is accepted into the program. 2. Attend a student orientation meeting during the summer prior to the program s first semester. 3. Participate in assessment of Core Performance Standards as defined by College policy and be reviewed by the ACCESS department if accommodations are necessary. (To review Core Performance Standards, see the Surgical Technology Web Site at 4. Pass a drug screen at the student s expense when requested by the program. Positive drug screens can result in students not being admitted to the program. 5. Agree to a criminal background check. Findings from the background check that do not meet clinical affiliation specifications will result in the student not being admitted to the program. 6. Provide proof of personal health insurance prior to clinical rotations. 7. Purchase liability insurance prior to clinical rotations. 8. Purchase school approved uniforms, if required, for clinical experiences. 9. Complete and provide written proof of a negative TB skin test or clear chest x-ray post conversion dated prior to the beginning of clinical rotations. 10. Complete and provide written proof of all immunizations recommended by the Department of State Health Services according to the following schedule: (
4 Influenza Vaccine - once a year Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis primary series or booster within the last 10 years MMR - one or two doses if born before 1957 Varicella 2 doses or documented age-appropriate vaccination or physician report of evidence of disease (chicken pox) Hepatitis A two doses, the second dose should be administered 6-18 months after the first dose Hepatitis B three dose series, the second dose should be administered 1 month after the first dose; the third dose should be given at least 2 months after the second dose (and at least 4 months after the first dose) Combined Hepatitis A and B three doses, the second dose should be administered 1 month after the first dose, the third dose should be given at 6 months NOTE: Students interested in admission to the program for Summer Semester should see their physician and begin immunizations 4 months prior to the beginning of the semester. Acceptance is also contingent upon program pre-requisites (BIOL 2401, BIOL 2402, HITT 1305 and HPRS 1271) being completed before starting the program. Science courses can be no more than five years old at the application deadline to be accepted as program requirements. 8 Information about the PSB Exam Register early! The exam has limited space and fills on a first-come, first-serve basis. Students may take the PSB for the Surgical Technology Program once in a 12 month period. PSB results are good for one year. If you have previously taken the Health Occupations Aptitude Examination or if you have taken the PSB for nursing, be sure to notify the program director by phone so a copy of your scores can be filed with your Surgical Technology admission file and evaluated for points. How to schedule an exam: Bring your receipt from the cashier s office to the Surgical Technology Office, located at the (McKinney) Central Park Campus, room B304. (Hours: M-F 8am-5pm) Sorry, no registrations by telephone. Please provide a stamped, self-addressed envelope at the time of registration if you wish to receive a copy of your scores mailed to you. You may also pick up a copy from the Surgical Technology Office, room B304. Fee: There is a $20 non-refundable fee, payable in the cashier s office at any campus. Payment is accepted by cash, check, credit card, or money order only.
