Must have worked as a CNA at least 6 months, have no outstanding complaints or restrictions on CNA certification; 2. Must be at least 18 years of age at the start of the class; 3. Must have received a District approved score or passed a screening math and reading comprehension test or appropriate ACT or SAT scores; 4. Must have earned a high school diploma, GED, U.S. College or U.S. military credits, or 12 years of education in a foreign country; 5. Must present proof of current DPS Fingerprint Clearance; 6. Must present proof of TB immunization or chest x-ray; and 7. Must present proof of rubella and rubeola immunization. The prospective student will submit documentation of the prerequisites with the completed Proof of Prerequisites Form to the Records and Registration Office prior to registration. Educational Value This course enhances the career ladder for the experienced Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) qualifying them to take the exam to become a Certified Medication Assistant (CMA). 2 Description This course provides basic background information and routine procedures that are essential for the safe administration of select medications by experienced Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA) in a long-term care facility under the supervision of a licensed nurse. Content includes basic principles of medication administration, simple calculations, and categories of medications. Upon successful completion of this course, students are eligible to take the written and manual skills certification exams administered by the Arizona State Board of Nursing (AZBN). Passing of both written and manual skills exams will meet the qualifications to become a Certified Medication Assistant (CMA). Supplies Nursing scrubs, notebook, pen, wrist watch, EAC name badge Competencies and 1. Explain the role of the Certified Medication Assistant (CMA) in Arizona including allowable acts, conditions, and restrictions. a. Discuss the legal requirements for medication assistant in Arizona. b. Discuss the medications that CMAs can administer in Arizona. c. Describe the Board of Nursing role in the regulation of medication assistants. d. Explain the delegation process and the information a CMA would need to accept delegation 2. Discuss principles, terminology, laws, and drug references as they apply to administration of medications. a. List drug sources and uses b. Differentiate between different names for the same drug c. Demonstrate use of drug references d. Discuss drug legislation and how laws protect the public e. Describe the processes of drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion and resident education/care that will support the desired effects of drugs b. List and describe factors affecting drug action c. Distinguish between therapeutic effects and side effects of a drug d. Describe types of adverse reactions to drugs and nursing assistant responsibilities for each type of adverse reaction. e. Differentiate between drug dependence and abuse in residents and staff. o Learner responds correctly to exam questions 4. Explain principles of medication administration and nursing care considerations when administering medications to clients of all ages. a. Recall the effect of aging on body systems b. Discuss pharmacokinetics in the aged c. Administer medications to elderly applying principles of safe medication administration, resident rights, and knowledge of aging changes that may affect ability to take medications d. Discuss the effects of medications on children 5. Accurately calculate medication dosages. a. Recall common mathematical operations b. Recognize different systems of measurement and when a licensed nurse needs to be involved. c. Write and define units of measurement for metric and household systems d. State common equivalents among measurement systems and use the conversion table to convert between systems e. Calculate the number of tablets or capsules to give when the available dose differs from the ordered dose. f. 4 mass. g. Verify a dosage calculation using conversion from one system to another. 6. Describe measures to promote safe medication administration in health care facilities. a. Name common abbreviations associated with medication administration. b. List medication forms c. Describe routes for administering medications d. Recognize the routes of medication that may be administered by the CMA e. Document time using international time f. Describe the licensed nurse s responsibility to check the components of a medication order. g. Describe the ordering, packaging, storage, and disposal of drugs h. Describe documentation used to communicate medication orders i. Pour medications according to accepted procedure j. Explain the 6 rights of medication administration k. Document medication administration l. Report and record observations. 7. Discuss medication properties, uses, adverse effects, administration of, education, and nursing assistant care of residents receiving certain types of medications. a. Identify fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins, and minerals. b. List one function of each vitamin or mineral. c. Discuss common herbal supplements, their uses, and potential dangers. d. Discuss types of infection, immunity, and persons at risk for infection. e. Discuss considerations when administering antibiotics. f. Differentiate major categories of antibiotics and the nursing assistant care and administration considerations associated with each type: penicillins, cephalosporins, tetracyclines, macrolides, aminoglycosides, sulfonamides, quinolones. g. 5 each type. h. Demonstrate administration of medications to residents with transmission-based precautions. i. Describe the structure and function of the eye and medication administration considerations when administering eye medications j. Describe the structure and function of the ear and the effect of aging on the auditory system. k. Identify common eye and ear pathology. l. Identify common types of ear drops and eye medications. m. Demonstrate administration of eye and ear medications (drops/ointments). n. Recall structure and function of integumentary system. o. Discuss symptoms of skin disorders. p. Discuss major categories of topical medicals. q. Identify those skin medications that should be administered by a licensed nurse. r. Identify general principles for medicating the skin and associated nursing assistant care. s. Demonstrate application of topical medications allowed. Types of Instruction Classroom presentation and discussions, skill lab, and clinical practice Grading Information Grading Rationale Four unit tests, a dosage calculation test, and a comprehensive final exam will be given. The course will be evaluated as follows: Unit tests = 60% Dosage calculation test = 20% Final exam (posttest) = 20%. Students must pass both theory and clinical components to pass the course. The clinical component of this class will be graded as either "P" for pass (competent) or "F" for fail (not competent). The theory component of this class will be a letter grade based on a percentage calculated from test scores. A minimum grade of "C" in lecture portion and a passing grade in clinical portions must be earned to pass the class and be recommended to take the state Certified Medication Assistant examination. Lecture and Skills lab portion Each of the following components must be completed satisfactorily for the student to pass the lecture and skills lab portion of the course: Four unit tests: The student must earn a minimum 75% on each unit test. If a student fails to achieve 75% on a test, an alternate form of the exam will be given for one test only. Students will not be given access to test items prior to the administration of a test. 6 Dosage calculation test: The student must earn 100% on the dosage calculation test. This test will consist of at least 10 simple divided dosage problems with oral medications. It does not require a change in system of measurement (e.g. ml to tsp). A calculator may be used. Two retakes using alternate forms of the dosage calculation test are allowed. Students will not be given access to test items prior to the administration of a test. Comprehensive Course Test: The student must earn a minimum of 80% on the final/comprehensive course test. If a student fails to achieve 80% and passed all unit tests on the first attempt, the student may re-take an alternate form of the comprehensive course test. Students will not be given access to test items prior to the administration of a test. Final skills laboratory: The final skills laboratory exam is Pass/Fail. All applicable skills will be tested. Critical elements of medication administration for all tested skills are found in the D&S Diversified Technologies Arizona Medication Assistant Manual. The student must demonstrate all critical elements of selected medication administration to receive a grade of pass. If each competency is not met, the student will receive a grade of fail. Test Retake A retake test: 1) addresses the competencies tested in the original test, 2) contains different items from the original test, 3) is documented in the student s record. The student must successfully complete the didactic and skill lab portion of the course in order to proceed to clinical practice portion of the course. Clinical Practice portion The student must complete the clinical practice within 45 days of completing the didactic and skills laboratory The student will receive a pass or fail grade for the clinical practicum; each competency must be met for the student to pass. The instructor will place an evaluation form in the students file indicating that the student has met all competencies for each of the 3 levels of clinical practice. The competencies of previous level must be met to proceed to the next level. Grading Scale A = % B = % C = % D = % F = % A grade of "P" for Pass in the clinical component AND a minimum grade of "C" in the lecture component must be earned to pass the class and to qualify to take the state certification exams. A grade of "D" or "F" in the theory component or a grade of "F" in the clinical component will cause the official grade for this course to be recorded as an "F" and the student will not pass the course or qualify to take the Certified Medication Assistant examination. 7 Course Completion The student successfully meets the passing standards of the didactic/laboratory and The student successfully completes the clinical practicum. Upon successful course completion, the instructor will provide certificate of course completion to each successful trainee. The course completion certificate includes the trainee s name, CNA certificate number, dates of course enrollment and completion, names and addresses of course provider and clinical practice sites, and lead instructor s signature. Eastern Arizona College will send copies of each student s certificate of completion to the Arizona State Board of Nursing and D&S Diversified Technologies.
