Redefining what s possible The Create Development Newsletter Issue 2 Spring 2012 welcome! Now is easily the most exciting time ever for Create. The Learning Nutrition pilots have been launched, a fantastic parental engagement Little Stars (3-7 year olds) project with the Welsh Rugby Union started, FUNS for everyone gets a fab make-over in its 2nd Edition, Physical Literacy stage/age expectations have been established, whilst new courses and resources First FUNS and Learn to Compete, Compete to Learn (L2C, C2L) have both enjoyed incredible early success. I think we could have predicted First FUNS would fly off the shelves given the advance demand and feedback we received, but I had previously suggested L2C, C2L would be a slow burner, a long term project. Now that I am involved in the final edit of the resource I can see how Tim and Pam can easily justify their long list of benefits to young people, but for me it is incredibly simple. It completely squashes the polarised arguments about competition and demonstrates how we can present it in a way that every young person can enjoy being included, challenged and supported through healthy competition. The feedback from the pilot courses supports my belief that it will revolutionise the way we approach and view competition. Before I leave you to browse I must thank so many of you for your anecdotes, examples and case studies that you send us. It is essential that we can prove that the work we do together genuinely makes a positive difference to young people. Ronnie Heath Ronnie Heath Managing Director. In this issue... hot topic physical literacy & assessment You probably wouldn t be reading this newsletter unless you were already aware of the importance of fundamental movement in maximising potential and life-long participation in PE and Sport. We have the tiered colours and profiles from the FUNS for everyone programme but we have been really searching for an effective way to communicate expected levels of Physical Literacy for different ages and stages and valuable ways to track progress and measure impact. With the help and feedback of our beacon schools we have been able to produce a graph and table to give broad expectations for key milestones for all, most and more able and talented young people. My health warning is that these illustrations have been compiled using data from children who have regularly used the FUNS programme but it gives us a clear understanding of what can be achieved with a broad cohort engaged in focused programmes around their Agility, Balance and Coordination abilities. We continue to collect data and learn from the differences our programmes can make. Through many case studies we are building on the success of the Sport Accelerate project in Wales last year (awarded the Olympic Inspiremark). We are working with 16 learning community schools in Central South-Wales to measure the impact of a 12 week programme with a cohort of KS2 children engaging with FUNS for the first time. In addition our partners Create Ireland are working with 40 students from the University of Cork, delivering FUNS to Early Years. Our pilots are successfully using a range of recording solutions including sticker books, wall charts and electronically through the web-based FUNS wheel. FUNS and Raising the Bar have given us, as teachers, the opportunity to move away from the very directed lessons we used to provide and focus on the individual development and needs of our children. Our children now have the capability to asses their own strengths and weaknesses and can focus on what they need to develop. creating a leadership legacy Create Development has been applying its Market Leading solutions in the training of young leaders and Young Ambassadors from across primary and secondary schools. The training, delivered in both conference and workshop formats, sees young leaders and Young Ambassadors given the opportunity to identify and practice their leadership skills, create a shared plan for future learning around the Values and an opportunity for them to create challenges to deliver a PE based legacy across their school. I thought the session was excellent, I thought you achieved fantastic results as far as the young leaders were concerned, getting them to work as cohesive groups, building on the Values they'd been learning about. They definitely understood and knew what the Values were and understood their application in the activities they undertook last Thursday. I was really pleased with the way they worked together and their responses to you.
