Job Purpose This is a new, central and strategically important position within the charity. The Head of Marketing and Communications will play a crucial role in determining the overall positioning of the organisation, it's profile and awareness levels. The post holder will be responsible for promoting and communicating the work of the charity to a wide range of audiences, forging new relationships and developing existing stakeholder relations. This will involve leading, implementing and evaluating marketing and communications strategies, projects, and campaigns that lead to effective positioning and promotion of the charity and our work. The post holder will be responsible for providing communications, marketing, media, brand and reputation management advice to the Board, CEO and Management team. Main duties and responsibilities 1. Strategy & management Working closely with the Director of External Affairs and Chief Executive to lead on the development and implementation of a UK wide three year rolling marketing and communications strategy, thereby playing a major role in delivering the overall organisational strategy and annual plans. Act as the charity s leading expert on all aspects of marketing and communications including brand management, digital and website development. Benchmark the charity s marketing and communications activity and review performance against leading edge examples in the sector. Provide professional advice and guidance to the Director of External Affairs, Chief Executive, Management team and the Board of Trustees at both strategic and operational levels on best practice approaches to all aspects of communications, marketing, public relations and media in order to maximise and enhance opportunities for promoting the charity. Develop and manage Bowel Cancer UK s Marketing and Communications team ensuring that team members are supported, grown professionally and aware of best practice and innovation within the sector. Ensure that the Marketing and Communications team have agreed plans, clear objectives and receive training and development opportunities to enable them to perform their roles effectively. Develop and manage the team s income and expenditure budget in conjunction with the Director of External Affairs, and provide regular updates to the Chief Executive and the Director of Finance. Work closely with our Education and Information team, Policy and Research and Fundraising teams to develop an excellent knowledge of their work and support them to maximise their impact through effective marketing and promotions. 2. Marketing and campaigns Lead the development and delivery of a three year rolling strategic marketing plan that includes a strategy for reaching the charity s key audiences as well as brand development and promotion. Act as the charity s brand guardian. Regularly review and develop the charity s key messages and ensure these are appropriately used and consistently communicated across the charity. Work closely with the Head of Health Promotion and Training and other colleagues throughout the organisation to develop charity-wide public education campaigns to transform awareness of bowel cancer. Work with the Education and Information team to promote our work, including our training events. 3. Website and Digital Development Develop and implement a rolling three year digital strategy and social networking strategy as part of the marketing and communications strategy. With the Communications Officer and colleagues across the charity develop the charity s website as a leading source of expertise and information on all aspects of bowel cancer diagnosis, treatment and care. Take a lead on developing digital resources such as short films, for use in all areas of the charity s work. 4. Communications Lead the further development and implementation of systems to monitor, research and evaluate the impact of our communications activities and ensure learning is built into future work. Review and manage the charity s internal communications and with the Management Team ensure that all staff are informed about the charity s work with a clear message management structure. 6 P a g e
With relevant teams oversee the development of and commission content and design for the charity s publications and information and ensure all patient information complies with Information Standard processes. Manage the charity s relationship with communications related suppliers to ensure optimum value for money. 5. Press, PR and campaigns Working with the Press and PR Advisor, lead the development of a proactive media and PR plan as part of the marketing and communications strategy to raise the charity s profile, reach and impact and make Bowel Cancer UK the go to organisation for press enquiries. Devise and manage (alongside the Press and PR Advisor) the organisation s engagement strategy for print, broadcast and online media and ensure we gain at least two major profile pieces each year. Work closely with and advise the Director of External Affairs and Research team on the design and promotion of our influencing activity, including policy campaigns and gain media coverage where appropriate. Represent Bowel Cancer UK and act as a spokesperson when required to do so. Work with the Director of External Affairs, department colleagues and the Chief Executive to develop the charities media lines and message structure. Draft articles, press releases, briefings and updates for both external and internal publications. Ensure background briefings are provided to the Chief Executive and other charity spokespeople prior to any media activity. 6. Representation and Stakeholder Management Work closely with the Director of External Affairs and the Chief Executive to pro-actively identify, cultivate and maintain relationships and partnerships with leading stakeholders including journalists and other marketing and communications stakeholders. Lead the charity s celebrity recruitment and liaison and approach potential celebrity supporters for the charity and our individual campaigns. 7 P a g e
With the Director of External Affairs, Chief Executive and other colleagues, develop and maintain the Charity s profile in the healthcare sector and help to create, prioritise and maintain partnerships that are beneficial to the organisation and its beneficiaries. 7. Working with the Fundraising Team Provide expert advice to the fundraising team on all aspects of PR, Marketing and Communications. Work in partnership with the fundraising team to develop and promote a programme of marketing activity that attracts and retains supporters ranging from corporate to individual to Bowel Cancer UK. Proactively work with the fundraising team to identify fundraising stories to promote in the media. 8. General Keep up to date with developments in the detection and treatment of bowel cancer by attending courses, conferences and seminars as appropriate. Participate in and contribute to relevant internal meetings and the development of organisational priorities. Carry out other associated duties as might arise, develop or be assigned, in line with the broad remit of the post. Head of Marketing and Communications Person Specification EXPERIENCE Extensive experience of marketing and communications including digital development. Significant experience of team and staff management including developing and monitoring budgets. Experience of leading change and improvement within a marketing and communications team. Experience of developing and implementing a Marketing and Communications strategy and annual plans. A proven track record in creating and delivering strategic campaigns with measurable outputs. Experience of acting as a spokesperson for a charity. SKILLS, ABILITIES AND KNOWLEDGE Excellent communication skills including proven ability to prepare and deliver presentations and to work with a wide range of people to deliver results. Able to write persuasive, well targeted copy for print and online communication channels; has strong editorial instincts. Able to work under pressure, prioritise tasks & organise workload to meet deadlines whilst maintaining a good attention to detail. Competent in all Microsoft Outlook packages. Experience in using Content Management Systems and/or website editing.
