PLANE CRAZY SATURDAY OCTOBER 19, 2013 AFTER ACTION REPORT We, who live in Mojave, know that October brings the best weather of the year and as we saluted and thanked our Emergency Service Personnel in Kern County, the weather was picture perfect! Stars of the Day! A hearty and sincere THANK YOU to the Emergency Services Personnel in the Mojave area, including: Kern County Fire Department; Kern County Sheriff Department; California Highway Patrol, Mercy Air Aerial Ambulance; Hall Ambulance and Mojave Air and Spaceport Fire, Crash & Rescue! Aviation photographer Chris Sampang captured this great shot as Kern County Fire Helicopter made an impressive water drop demonstration. Thanks Chris! He was here from the Bay Area, visiting with his fellow photographer friend, Norman McBride. He was using a beautiful Nikon camera, while Norm shot with a Canon. Just as the Bell 205 was starting to spool up Chris took this photo. I love to hear a Huey start brings back memories of our H-models.
This is a Super Huey with an 1800 shaft horsepower turbine Lycoming engine from a Cobra. It also uses a transmission and tail rotor from a Bell 212 helicopter. It has a fixed tank - 360 gallons of water, with a snorkel and pump attached. The pump at the end of the snorkel attached to the Bell 205 Super Huey can load 360 gallons of water in a matter of seconds. Water can be siphoned from lakes, rivers, reservoirs, or a portable tank through this hanging snorkel. They used a portable tank at Mojave Airport. Kids of all ages loved the lineup of emergency vehicles on the flightline! Shown in photo: Hall Ambulance, Mojave Airport Fire, Crash and Rescue trucks, and Kern County Fire Engine, Mojave Station. Kern County Fire pilot Pat Williams explained all of the equipment on board their machine.
Trucks with big horns, sirens and red lights filled the flightline on Saturday! Thank you Kern County Sheriff for your fantastic display of dirt bikes and off road vehicles! CHP had a good looking booth complete with sample Spike Strips and lots of printed hand outs.
Air Methods - Mercy Air (Aerial Ambulance) based at Mojave Air and Spaceport flew their new Bell 407 down to allow visitors to look inside. Thank you,pat Thy, for flying the air ambulance down the flightline and being on hand to answer questions. We are so thankful just knowing you are available when needed! Many thanks to Steve Rushford, Midge Wright, Bill Deaver, Chris and Riitta Martin who all worked the promotion table for MTM. Maggie Geimke of Usborne books and Doug Castleman Aviation Art had displays, as did Anthony and Jamie Cardoza and an aviation and space book table. Thank you all for participating in Plane Crazy Saturday! The Edwards AFB CAP Composite Squadron 84 had a booth set up, but all of the cadets were out working on the flightline! They do a fantastic job at Plane Crazy Saturday! Thank you CAP!!
