The electronics for the keyless entry system are built into the radio. f you unplug and remove the radio, you will disconnect the keyless entry system. THERE S A SOLUTON: As of the print date of this document, there are no third party adapters to allow you to completely remove the radio. The most accepted method to install a new radio in this situation is to actually keep the radio inside the vehicle. The nstall Doctor will show you how to do this inside these instructions. t basically involves moving the radio behind the center console and mounting the new radio into the location where the radio would normally be mounted. Factory Radio NOTE: Removing the radio in this vehicle requires removing lower dash panels on both the drivers and passenger sides of the vehicle as well as the center console panel as seen in the photo above. Once this center console panel is removed, you will access to the hidden screws that secure the radio to the dash. STEP 1: Locate and remove (2) phillips screws on the curved lower dash panel below the radio. The 2 screws will be located above the cigarette lighter plug. STEP 2: Open the glove box. There are two (2) hidden screws that need to be removed. The first screw is located at the top left corner of the glove box assembly. Locate and remove one (1) brass colored phillips screw. STEP 3: The glove box must be freed from the dash. To keep the glove box from falling to the floor of the vehicle, stop bumpers are attached to each side of the glove box. With you hand, firmly push in the thin plastic of the glove box. You will see the stop bumper attached to the side of the glove box. f you push in hard enough, you can free the stop bumper from behind the dash. Do this to each side, one side at a time, and the glove box will fall free of the dash panel. STEP 4: The second hidden screw is located at the lower left corner of the glove box and can only be accessed when the glove box is completely lowered out of the dash. This screw is a phillips screw as well as an 10 mm bolt. this screw/bolt. All nformation, ncluding Photos And llustrations, n These s s Believed To Be Correct And Reliable. STEP 6: Once all 3 phillips screws have been remove, the lower dash panel can be pulled from the main dash. The top of the lower dash panel is secured to the main dash with one snap on the left of the steering column, and one snap on the right of the steering column. Gently pull to unsnap and free the lower dash panel from the main dash. With your hands, pull the right side of the lower dash panel (the part of the panel secured by 2 screws hidden behind the glove box) then pull the left side. You will have to wiggle the panel but should be able to pull the panel away from the main dash. STEP 10: The radio is secured to the dash with two (2) 8 mm screws / phillips screws at the rear of the radio. The only way to remove these screws is to look up, under the radio where the center dash panel was just removed. Locate and remove both screws. Once the screws have been removed, pull the radio out of the dash. Unplug the connector attached to the rear of the cigarette lighter attached to the lower dash panel. NOTE: STEP 11: Unplug the black cable plugged into the rear of the radio. Unplug the plastic wire harness connector from the rear of the radio. The radio can now be pulled from the dash. f your vehicle does have a installed keyless entry system, you will need to keep the radio. The new radio will be installed into the opening where the radio was just removed from. You will use the wires that were unplugged from the rear of the radio to connect to your new radio. NOTE: you begin: This vehicle requires the use of a specialty radio installation kit designed specifically for 1996 to 1998 Civics. The radio is designed with an extended face panel so that the face of the radio sits flush with the rest of the dash surrounding the radio. However, the rectangular opening in the dash the new radio will slide into is approximately 1 inch behind the front panel of the radio. When installing a new radio, the face of the new radio will not align flush with the rest of the dash because of this 1 inch difference in depth. The specialty radio installation kit is designed to move the radio out so that it aligns with the rest of the dash surrounding the radio as well as covering the small gaps on each side of the new radio. All information needed to complete the mounting of the new radio to the installation kit is included on this sheet. f you need additional help, please consult the following tech documents: Document Title Document # Why use radio installation kits 999005 ing your radio to an installation kit 999007 Radio security 999010 Radio nstallation Kit For 1996-1998 Civics Slide the kit into the rectangular opening in the dash.
