Consumer Electronics Product Central Master Data Business Needs Group Date: 24-June-2010 This is an Industry Engagement Call-to-Action to recruit users from the Consumer Electronics industry and from everywhere in the world to bring their expertise, commitment, and contribution to a new Industry Engagement work area. The information herein gives a general description of the new work area and the Statement of Business Needs activities that are being launched to accomplish the work. For information on how to join this work area, please refer to Section 12 below. 1. Consumer Electronics Product Central Master data Business Needs Group Develop a standard with product specific attributes and a classification system for the Consumer Electronics industry to use the GDSN. 2. Objective/Scope of the Consumer Electronics Product Central Master data Business Needs Group This work effort is a Work Request (WR), the entry point into the GSMP process, which is submitted by the community to request new standards or modify existing standards. A Business Needs Group (BNG) is formed to create a Statement of Business Need (SBN), which enters the GSMP for prioritization and assignment to a GSMP working group. The Consumer Electronics Industry User Group (CE IUG) Product Central Master Data BNG will work to understand the needs of the industry, and may identify specific areas where there is a business need to develop a GS1 Standard or other GS1 System component. The Scope of this activity covers Extension by product: Hi-Tech & Multimedia (TVs, DVD players, Camcorders, Digital Cameras IT & Telecoms (Laptop computers, Printers, Mobile phones ) This group will be leveraging the work some retailers (e.g. Best Buy) have already carried out on different attributes describing CE products. These lists are not categorized so there is an opportunity to order this information and share with other retailers AND manufacturers for gap analysis purposes, identification of additional information needed etc. Activities will also include the consideration of different perspectives and alternative ways to use Master Data e.g. Multimedia Catalogue could be a tool. This will not be a specific work item initially but we shall refer to such a tool as an additional benefit to standardizing data. GSMP Template v12 Page 1 of 7

2.1. CE Central Master Data Needs include: Need to define rich data attributes. The real value in data is the rich data associated with products, especially for multichannel retailers and different purposes for usage of product data (such as listing, logistics, marketing, sales, on-shelf information, ). Need to track product at item/component level e.g. track versioned components that have been incorporated into products. Need technical information for obsolescent and obsolete products. Increase availability of relevant product information at low cost to retailers and consumers. Product traceability providing accurate and up-to-date information about products. Supply chain partners identifying and describing products in the same way to reduce costs. Reduce data errors and inconsistencies. Need a more efficient way of collecting master data for marketing purposes and consumer information. Retailers want to populate their websites and use applications that can compare data attributes between brands. Information about products is difficult to collect and keep up-to-date. Companies providing this service often only have information available after a product has been launched and also often comes to retailers in free text fields that then need extensive human input to feed these attributes into a retailer s web site. Alternatively, the supplier has to manually feed information into a web portal which is slow and laborious. Increase quality of master data ideally provided by suppliers/manufacturers themselves referencing unique (GS1) identification keys and globally valid standards. Generally, the group must operate within the following context: Develop documents that meet the objective of the work group. Develop documents that capture the additional considerations and concerns that were discussed during the group s calls and physical meetings. 3. Expertise Required This is a call for business information and business information technology experts for the Consumer Electronics Product Central Master Data Business Needs Group. The experts should represent trading partners from both sides of the trading relationship, third parties, and solution providers to have proper representation on the working group. Technology provider participation will be necessary to have feedback on modules that could be created to incorporate defined attributes. The intent is to have balanced membership from the Consumer Electronics user community to define and establish proper global standards with the clear intention of implementation of these. The Industry Engagement work group model requires a minimum level of support throughout the process and to meet eballot requirements for due process (as defined in the GSMP Users Manual). Failure to achieve the minimum through this CTA for due process will mean the group will not be launched. GSMP Template v12 Page 2 of 7

4. Area s Affected The task of this work group will affect GDSN and Data Accuracy as the output from this work group will be the global use of the GDSN for Consumer Electronic products. The initiative aims to demonstrate that the GDSN is uniquely positioned to meet current and emerging requirements for electronic product catalogue data. This work will collaborate with local CE community networks through direct participation in WG activities and via GS1 Member Organisation representation. Community surveys will be used when necessary. 4.1. Possible Standards to Employ Identification Data alignment Master data management Data sharing 5.
