The material contained within this checklist will aid in both the predictability and timeliness of the plan review process and eventual installation of your project. This checklist contains the minimum standard information required for a project submitted for the plan review of Kitchen Hood Fire Suppression systems. Plans sets submitted without the minimum information listed below cannot be accepted for review. Before the installation of any hood suppression system may commence, a currently licensed D-7 contractor with the City of Aurora must be issued the appropriate permit for all work performed. Licensing information is available from the Aurora Building Division by calling 303-739-7420. Please ask for a licensing representative. These fire protection systems include, but are not limited to: Fire Sprinkler Systems, Standpipe Systems, Fire Alarm Systems, Commercial Kitchen Suppression Systems and FM-200, Clean Agent Systems and Dry Chemical Systems. NOTICE: The suppression system installation shall be made in accordance with the drawings, specifications, and applicable standards. Should a conflict occur between the drawings and specifications, the specifications shall prevail. THE CITY OF AURORA HAS ADOPTED THE FOLLOWING CODES*: 2009 International Building Code (IBC) 2009 International Mechanical Code (IMC) 2009 International Fire Code (IFC) 2009 International Plumbing Code (IPC) 2011 National Electrical Code (NEC) 2009 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). *Amendments to the codes can be found at www.municode.com (Chapter 22 Buildings and Building Regulations) 2002 National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 17/17A Note: The design of your project must reflect compliance with the adopted codes and be shown on the cover sheet of your plan submittal. MINIMUM PLAN REVIEW DOCUMENT REQUIREMENTS PERMIT FEES: A fire protection system fee schedule can be found at the following City of Aurora website: www.auroragov.org GENERAL REQUIREMENTS The City of Aurora Building Permit application form must be completed in its entirety. Plan review fees must be paid in full before plans will be accepted for plan review. One (1) complete set of the drawings and specifications (field set will be stamped and returned to the licensed contractor to be kept on job site). Plans stamped Preliminary and/ or Not for Construction will not be accepted for review. Plans may be submitted for electronic review in Adobe PDF format. Other formats will not be accepted. Electronic stamped engineered plans are acceptable.. Approved plans will be issued back in the same manner but will need to be printed for use in the field. Plan sheet size options are 24 x 36, 11 x 17 or 8.5 x 11. Submitted plans must be drawn to scale in U.S. units to ensure legibility with sufficient detail to clearly document the nature and scope of proposed construction. PLAN AND SPECIFICATIONS REQUIRED TO BE SHOWN ON, AND PROVIDED WITH THE PLANS Shop drawings shall be prepared and signed by a minimum NICET Fire Sprinkler Level III certified individual or a Colorado Registered Professional Engineer. Provide one (1) complete set of plans for our review. Contractor name, address and phone number shall be shown on the plan cover sheet. Include names of any other contractors performing work on the system (electrical, fire alarm, mechanical). The plans/specifications submitted shall designate the authority having jurisdiction as the City of Aurora The plans shall specify the adopted IFC and NFPA code editions the plans were designed under. Plans shall be required for all preengineered and engineered systems. The specifications shall indicate the hazard to be protected and shall include such information as physical dimensions, combustibles, air-handling equipment, heat sources, etc. The plans/specifications shall indicate that only equipment that is specifically listed and compatible for use with the extinguishing system shall be used. The specifications shall include system acceptance tests. Include a scaled Floor Plan of the area where suppression systems will be installed (See Attachment A ) showing: All equipment with names and sizes, to be protected Elevation view of the room and equipment Show the location of the automatic gas (or electrical) shut off valves. Show and label the types, locations, and dimensions of exhaust hoods, ducts, cooking equipment, piping, tanks, pull stations and nozzles. 2 Include the manufacturer s drawing of the system as designed (See Attachment B ) Add these following General Notes to the cover sheet of the plans: The city of Aurora Building Division does not grant approval for any violations of adopted fire code. Code violations uncovered during field inspections must be corrected. Field inspection consultation is available upon request. Call 303-739-7420 to request consultation. Prior to final city inspection signoff the installing contractor to provide city inspector with a completed kitchen hood suppression installation certification. System manual must be on job site at time of the inspection. The contractor (or designee) must provide all nessessary testing equipement and perform all testing required by the life safety inspector. Gas shut off valves, agent containers, expellant gas cartridges or cylinders cannot be placed in the ceiling areas. Shut off valves concealed behind removable wall panels must be no higher than 5 above floor and have the panel labeled fuel shutoff located behind this panel.
minimum plan review document requirements The hood suppression system will be interconnected into any existing fire alarm system. Activation of the hood suppression system will initiate a general alarm throughout the occupied interior space and the outside horn/strobe. Per nfpa 17/17a, section 5.2.1.9. Provide a 40b type k fire extinguisher within 30 of cooking equipement per 2009 ifc, section 904.11.5. Location of manual pull station shall be a minimum of 10 from the hood and next to an exit door or on a path of egress. Installer shall field verify all hazard dimensions for proper nozzle type and positioning prior to first inspection. Manual pull station is located between 42 to 48 inches above floor level. Manual pull system activates system. On activation of the hood fire suppression system, the exhaust fans are to continue running and the make-up air is to shut down. On activation of any cooking equipment fire extinguishing system, all sources of fuel and electric power that produce heat to all equipment protected by the system shall be shut down.per nfpa 17a 4.4.3.1. Fuel or power shutdown device operates on system activation and all equipment under the hood shall shutdown when the system activates. Gas appliances not requiring protection but located under the same ventilation equipment shall also be shut off automatically upon system operation. Nfpa 17a 4.4.3.2 Fuel or power shutdown device must be manually reset. Operation of detection device activates system; (perform a nitrogen blow off test.) Operation of any manual actuator shall be all that is required to bring about the full operation of the system. Systems protecting two or more hoods or plenums, or both, that meet the requirements of nfpa 17a sec. 5.1.5 Shall be installed to ensure the simultaneous operation of all systems protecting the hoods, plenums, and associated cooking appliances located below the hoods. Nfpa 17a 5.6.1 When a listed releasing mechanism is used employing a single line for mechanical detection and remote manual control the remote manual control shall be installed inline, prior to all detection devices, so malfunction of one does not impede operation of the other. Provide one set of manufacturer s specifications verifying tank flow point capacities and manufacturer s nozzle flow chart, system component cutsheets and installation instructions corresponding to each protected cooking appliance. Where field conditions necessitate any substantial change from the approved plans, the corrected as-installed plans shall be submitted to the City of Aurora for approval. The details on a UL-300 system shall include sufficient information and calculations on the amount of dry chemical; the size, length, and arrangement of connected piping, or piping and hose; and the description and location of nozzles so that the adequacy of the system can be determined. Flow rates of nozzles used shall be provided for engineered systems. Information shall be submitted pertaining to the location and function of detection devices, operating devices, auxiliary equipment, and electrical circuitry, if used. Sufficient information shall be indicated to properly identify the apparatus and devices used. 3

The City of Aurora Building Division has committed to overall maximum average times for plan reviews. Those plans requiring corrections will be rejected within the time frame listed below and, when resubmitted with all corrections done properly, would receive a plan approval within the time frame listed below following receipt of the complete and error free corrections. City plan review for code compliance = 7 working days Code corrections by applicant = 5 working days City review of code corrections = 2 working days TOTAL WORKING DAYS = 14 DAYS PLAN REVIEW TIMES TOTAL CALENDAR DAYS (WEEKS) = 21 DAYS (3 WEEKS) BOARD OF APPEALS: The City of Aurora has created a Building Code and Contractors Appeals and Standards Board. Applicants have the right to have the board hear appeals of orders, decisions or determinations made by the building official relative to the application and interpretation of the building code. Any application for appeal to the board shall be based on a claim that the true intent of the code or the rules legally adopted there under have been incorrectly interpreted, the provisions of the building code do not fully apply or an equally good or better form of construction is proposed.
