UIC Schl f Public Health Student Handbk 2006-2007 Jint Degrees MEDICINE DENTISTRY BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION NURSING LAW VETERINARY MEDICINE MD/PHD TRAINING PROGRAM Medicine The UIC Cllege f Medicine (COM) and the Schl f Public Health (SPH) ffer a five-year prgram f study leading t jint MD/MPH degrees. Graduates f the jint MD/MPH prgram are well-pised t keep pace with the increasingly cmplex and inter-related fields f medicine and public health. Medical students in the cmbined degree acquire rudimentary epidemilgic and statistical cncepts enabling them t understand ppulatin-based health phenmena, skills t successfully manage limited health resurces, and principles f cmmunity and envirnmental health which bear n the health f the ppulatin. Mre advanced public health curses enable the student t augment his r her medical training with a deeper understanding in ne f the fllwing disciplines: epidemilgy, health plicy and administratin, cmmunity health sciences r envirnmental and ccupatinal health sciences. Admissin t the Prgram Students are encuraged t apply t the jint degree prgram at the utset f their training. Hwever, in unusual circumstances, medical students may apply t the jint prgram during their first year f medical schl. Incming students must apply t and be accepted by bth the Cllege f Medicine and the Schl f Public Health; students wh chse the dual-degree prgram shuld therefre have higher-level academic talent t accmplish the gals f the cmbined prgram. Prgram f Study The jint MD/MPH degree prgram is a five year prgram f study. Students in the prgram must satisfy requirements f the Masters f Public Health Prfessinal Enhancement Prgram (PEP), a 34 t 39 semester hur prgram, and satisfy fur years f the required Medical Degree prgram f study. The student s public health studies will vary depending n the selected divisin. Prgressin Thrugh the Prgram Students are encuraged t take advantage f the summers befre and after the Cllege f Medicine (M1) year t cmplete sme f the MPH cre curse requirements. Cncurrent public health curse wrk during the M1 thrugh M3 years is discuraged. Hwever, SPH night r cmputer curses might be allwed at the discretin f the advisrs (subject t apprval f the COM prgram gverning bdy r Senir Assciate Dean and the SPH Assciate Dean fr Academic Affairs) fr select students wh have established excellent academic standing in bth the Cllege f Medicine and Schl f Public Health. Typically, the furth year f the five-year prgram will be dedicated t cmpleting the cre requirements and much f the elective curse lad f the Master f Public Health degree. In the fifth year, students cmplete all M4 requirements including the medicine sub-internship and the cre sub-specialty rtatins, the SPH capstne experience, and Cllege f Medicine clinical electives which may be satisfied by apprved curse wrk in the SPH. An alternate rute t cmpleting the jint prgram permits medical students t cmplete their M1 thrugh M4 years in successin fllwed by a year f cncentrated study in public health. The jint MBA/MPH prgram is designed fr baccalaureate-prepared students wh are seeking health care and business preparatin fr health care executive psitins in gvernment, hspital systems, lng-term care, health maintenance rganizatins, planning/regulatry bdies, and cnsulting. The MPH practicum and the Master s Paper represent the capstne/culminating experience in the CHS curriculum. The practicum prvides an pprtunity fr nurses t mve frm acute care t cmmunity-based practice. Students chse a practicum site based n his r her interest, thus the practicum serves as a stepping-stne fr mving int the cmmunity setting and int leadership rles that invlve prgram develpment and administratin. The gals f this Crdinated Prgram include (1) prviding students with a cre understanding f the ways in which law and public health wrk tgether, (2) enhancing the educatinal value f each degree by crdinating respective curricula, and (3) helping develp a well-trained grup f prfessinals capable f addressing issues at the intersectin f public health, medicine, and law. Admissin t the Prgram T be cnsidered fr admissin students must take the LSAT, have earned a baccalaureate degree frm an accredited institutin, and satisfy ther applicatin requirements fr each institutin. Students in the Crdinated Prgram will have the ptin f starting at either institutin, and will have t cmply with that institutin s rules fr enrllment. Prgram f Study Bth prgrams may be cmpleted in 3 ½ years fr full-time law students and 4 ½ years fr part-time law students. Students in the prgram will be assigned faculty advisrs chsen frm amng the attrneys n the faculty f the Schl f Public Health and frm the faculty members engaged in health-related issues at Chicag-Kent. Each student will be assigned ne advisr frm each schl. Students must cmplete ne year f curse wrk (r the equivalent) at SPH thrugh the Health Plicy and Administratin Divisin (HPA) f the schl. Students wrk at UIC will qualify fr twelve hurs f elective credit at Chicag-

Kent (apprximately ne semester s wrk). During the remaining semesters at Chicag-Kent, the students will be required t meet all ther curricular requirements f the law schl. Students may begin their study by attending either schl first, but cannt take curses at bth schls during the same semester withut special apprval by bth schls. Students receiving financial assistance are advised t attend nly ne schl during an academic year. Masters f Public Health Cursewrk The MPH cmpnent will cnsist f at least 37 t 39 semester hurs f curse wrk. This includes the Cre Required Curses (19 semester hurs) and at least 15 semester hurs f electives decided upn in cllabratin with the student s faculty advisr. Students must als cmplete the Schl s field practicum experience (at least 300 hurs f prfessinal wrk in the student s field f study) (3-5 semester hurs) and satisfy the Schl s capstne requirement. T satisfy the capstne requirement, students must demnstrate their ability t integrate cncepts, theries and skills frm the cre public health disciplines int analysis f a public health issue, prgram r plicy. Law Schl Cursewrk Students must meet all f the law schl academic requirements fr graduatin. In the first year f study, students will take all required curses, including Trts, Cntracts, Real Prperty, Criminal Law, Civil Prcedure, Justice and the Law, Legal Research and Legal Writing - in the same sequence as ther law students, as well as nn-health-related electives. T meet graduatin requirements, students must cmplete a ttal f 75 credit hurs in additin t the 12 credits they receive fr the SPH curse wrk upn successful cmpletin f the MPH requirements. While the student is at ne schl, he r she will be cnsidered n fficial leave f absence at the ther schl. Students will pay the tuitin and fees f the schl at which they are taking classes. MD/PhD training in epidemilgy and/r bistatistics prvides an extended perid f study in the etilgic and methdlgic appraches f ppulatin-based health research in cncert with cmplete medical schl educatin. Applicatin is nrmally made at the time f applicatin t the Cllege f Medicine; hwever, applicants will als be cnsidered during their first tw years f medical training. Students must apply t the MD/PhD Training Prgram and t the Cllege f Medicine, and indicate in their applicatin that they are interested in a PhD in epidemilgy r bistatistics.
