My life long love of computers began when my parents brought an XT in 1989. After breaking it within the first week and then fixing it, I realised that computers were a field that I could spend the rest of my life exploring. When I discovered the Internet in 1996, I knew that I had found my passion. In 2003, I graduated from Rhodes with an honours degree in Journalism having specialized in New Media. That same year I studied an MSCD.NET at I.T. Intellect and worked for Otaku Web Development for the rest of the year as a junior developer. In 2004 I
started my own new media agency, Good Kid New Media, which I ran successfully with my partner for eight years. In that time we partnered with companies in New York and London, and worked with clients ranging in size from small business owners to international multi national corporations and brands. Over the years we were privileged to be able to work with brands like Hewlett Packard, The Ford Foundation, Royal Bank of Scotland, Flight of the Conchords, Wonderbra, Playtex and others. Projects have run the gamut in budget from several thousands of rands, all the way up to hundreds of thousands of rands. My roles in the company saw me take on dual roles of lead technical developer, along with project leader/manager on several projects. Many times we would be approached by an agency, or new client who was looking for a company to lead their project through the entire developmental cycle, from conceptualisation of the website's strategy, to planning, implementation, launching the project to the general public and the subsequent maintenance of the website and online digital strategy. Having to guide the project through its entire lifespan from the initial sale to the launch of the project gave me an insight into all facets of a projects planning and development. In 2011, I left Good Kid New Media in the hands of my partner, and began my role at The Unlimited as Senior.NET Developer. My role at The Unlimited is much like the company a varied and dynamic one. My day to day role is the maintenance of the existing key systems within the company and the development of new systems in order to fulfil on business objectives. The Unlimited is a financial services provider underpinned by Telesales and Face to Face sales team. Our system collects every single day of the month from all the major banks in South Africa, and we maintain a system of over half a million active customers. This system is completely custom built over the course of the last 8 years. As such it is an extremely complex system that sprawls many different architectures and technologies, most notably: SQL Server 2005 2012, SQL Service Broker, ASP.NET Web Forms v3.5, ASP.net MVC 4.0, Windows Services, MySQL, Asterisk Telephony Systems, Windows Services, Windows Forms and many other custom applications that have been developed in house over the years. The Unlimited as a company has a very entrepreneurial spirit and as such, the way the company sells has changed many times over the years, and our system has had to adapt over the years to this. The development team that I work with is made up of Web Developers, SQL Developers, a Database Administrator, the Operational team and our testing team, but I work closely with the other members of the IT department, including our business analysts, infrastructure team and business intelligence team. Typically I would take the lead on larger projects and would normally work closely with at least one other developer, and a business analyst. Business Analysts would provide a requirements document from business, which I would
then devise a functional/technical document and develop a strategy which would then be discussed with all the other developers in the team. Once a strategy has been agreed upon, I would develop the solution, which would be reviewed by another member of the team to ensure coding standards and quality of work. A final testing/training document would then be produced and it would be handed over to the testing team. Once testing is complete the solution would be deployed by the testing team in consultation with myself as to specific configurations, IIS changes etc. While some projects would be developed based on business needs, many projects are initiated by myself and would be developed in order to take our overall infrastructure forward. In these situations my role would be larger as I would need to develop the overall strategy and requirements documents for the project. Additionally as a Senior Developer my role is not limited to purely to development. I am expected to share knowledge amongst the team and the larger company and I often have often held knowledge sharing sessions with team mates and the broader company. I also conduct interviews with potential staff members who want to join the development team and review all code samples that potential staff submit. Additionally as is expected at The Unlimited I often assist the digital teams when they lack specific competencies in the management of The Unlimited s online strategy.
