From the Denison High School Guidance Office Senior Scholarship Update #5 2006 07 The Joel E. Maupin Memorial Scholarship--The amount of this RENEWABLE scholarship will range from $250 to $1000 depending on the financial situation of the student(s) who wins it. (More than one may be granted.) This scholarship is meant to be awarded to a student who has experienced difficult circumstances while growing up (family poverty, lack of family stability, personal medical or social issues, etc.), but who wants to go on for further education. You must be able to show evidence of some adversity and financial need. You must have a minimum 2.5 GPA (or fairly close to that.) A short application, essay and one letter of recommendation is required. Application Deadline--May 1, Return the application to Mr. McGrane, and he will forward it to the selection committee. Knights of Columbus Council 2074 Scholarship--Traditionally these $300 scholarships have been awarded to Catholic students. A very short application is required. The money is not granted until after completion of the first semester of college. Return application to the Guidance Office. Application Deadline--April 13, The Denison High School Student Athlete Scholarship--This scholarship is intended to be awarded to a student who has clearly demonstrated his/her best efforts to excel in the classroom as well as on the playing field. The student does not have to have the highest GPA or be a starter on a squad. An application, recommendations, and transcript are required. This scholarship is given by 2 DHS graduates. Application Deadline--April 23. The Clarence Bartlett Conservation Scholarship--This $500 scholarship is given by the West Central Izaak Walton League of America to a Crawford County senior who plans to pursue a career in a conservation-related area. Some agriculture-related majors will also qualify. A short essay is required with the application. Application Deadline--May 1.... A short application with 3 essays is required. Application Deadline--May 1. Olive Branch Chapter 205, Order of Eastern Star Scholarship--Several $200 scholarships are available to worthy students. You must complete an application and get 3 recommendations. One of the recommendations must be from an Eastern Star member. Application Deadline--May 1, Crawford County Fair Scholarships/4-H Scholarships--Check with Jan Henningsen at the County Extension Office about these. Denison High School Student Senate Scholarships--Check with Mrs. Bradley or Mrs. Jentz about these. FCCLA Scholarship--Awarded to one FCCLA member who has excelled in the local chapter and who has promoted and lived the goals of the chapter. Application Deadline--May 4,
Music Boosters Scholarships--Check with Mr. Bekkerus and/or Mr. Klaver for the application forms. Usually, 2 or 3 scholarships in the amount of $300 are given on Awards Day. The John C. Culver Scholarship --Two scholarships are awarded ($1500 and $1000) to Iowa students who plan to attend any 2 or 4 year Iowa college. Financial need is considered, but most important will be a statement of why you are interested in politics and government. A short essay is required. Application Deadline--April 2, Chevrolet Classics Club of Omaha/Council Bluffs Scholarship--A $1000 scholarship will be awarded to a winning student who will pursue a career related to the automotive industry. The student may attend a trade school, community college or university. An application, recommendations, and short essay are required. Application Deadline--April 15, An Incredible Offer--The Hospital Foundation of Crawford County is offering a $20,000 scholarship to someone who intends to pursue a career in nursing, leading to an RN degree. The money will be paid in installments of up to $5000 per year for a total of 4 years. The individual receiving the scholarship in 2007 must agree to return to the Crawford County Memorial Hospital for employment after graduation. An application, short essay, recommendations, and proof of community service will be required. Application Deadline--April 15, Friday Club Scholarship--All students planning further education are eligible. An application, a letter of reference, and a letter stating your academic objectives are required. Application Deadline--April 2, 2007 File Your File Your File Your File Your The Helen Starek Memorial AAUW Scholarship--This scholarship is given in memory of a long time Crawford County teacher and musician. Mrs. Starek was devoted to, and actively supported, all of the fine arts--performing and visual. The application is a letter addressed to the scholarship committee in which you describe your involvement in the fine arts here at Denison High School. Not only should your letter detail your contributions to the arts, but it should also address how you have personally benefitted from a fine arts education. Letters should be turned in to Mr. McGrane in the Guidance Office. Application Deadline--April 23, United Bank of Iowa Scholarship--This is open to all seniors who have an account at UBI. If you don t have an account, your parents must have one with UBI. An application, including personal references, is required. Financial need is a serious consideration. Community involvement and future plans must be written about. Application Deadline--May 10, The Denison Education Association Scholarship--Funded entirely by donations from those teachers in the Denison Community School District who are members of the Denison Education Association, these $300 scholarships are awarded to students who will attend some type of further education. If there is an acceptable pool of applicants who plan to attend various education institutions, one scholarship may be awarded to a student attending a community college or trade school, while another will be awarded to a student attending a 4 year school. It is anticipated that 3 scholarships will be awarded to the Class of An application and short essay are required. An interview may be required of the finalists. Application Deadline--April 13, Educational Communications Scholarship Foundation--$1000+ scholarships awarded to 110
students across the nation. Grades and activities are important areas of judgment for the first round. There is a $4.00 processing fee. Semi-finalists will be asked to write an essay. Application Deadline--May 15, Great Clips for Hair Scholarships--These $300 scholarships are awarded to students who plan to pursue a career in cosmetology or barbering. An application, short essay and letter of recommendation are required. Application Deadline--May 1, The Leila Riggleman Scholarship--This is a $1000 scholarship which is paid in 4 equal payments over 4 years. All students are eligible, but you must be planning to eventually pursue a BA degree. A short application and letter about goals will be required. Application Deadline--April 27,... File Your File Your File Your File Your E. A. Raun Scholarship--Funding for this award is from the interest on a financial donation which Mr. Raun made to Denison High School. The amount of the scholarship and the number of scholarships awarded is determined by the amount of that interest. A very short application and a letter about your goals are required. Application Deadline--May 3. The Crawford County Farm Bureau Scholarship--Your family must have membership in the Crawford County Farm Bureau. (The leaders tell me that there are over 1,000 members in Crawford County. Perhaps you don t live on a farm, but if your parents have Farm Bureau insurance, they are members.) The committee hopes to award 10 of these $200 scholarships to deserving students in the county. You must be planning to major in some aspect of agriculture/ag business/conservation or something related. However, you may also qualify if you plan to pursue a degree which will help you contribute to rural Iowa in some way. (Example: you plan to teach in a small town, or start a business in a rural area, etc.) Application Deadline: April 10, File your soon, even if you don t think you will qualify for need-based free money. Denison Kiwanis Club Scholarship--Community service, volunteerism, and good citizenship are important components of the application process for this scholarship. You must provide an essay, a recommendation, and an application letter. Application Deadline--April 11, The Denison American Legion Post #8 Scholarship--You must be a relative of a veteran who is a member of Post #8. You must have at least a C average. You must write a letter to the Commander of the American Legion, Denison Post, explaining why you should be considered for the award. The details are on a form in the Guidance Office. The William and Elsie Bandow Scholarship--You must be interested in becoming a pastor of the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church OR you may be planning to become a teacher in a Lutheran school. Others are encouraged to apply, but first preferences will be given to those who fit the above criteria. An application and 2 letters of recommendation are needed. Application Deadline--May 1, The Denison Consumers Credit Union Scholarship--This is open to all students who are members of the Denison Consumers Credit Union or whose parents are members. A total of $1400 will be given to a qualified student or students. A letter of application, resume, and transcript are required. Application Deadline--April 15, File Your File Your File Your File Your Siouxland Officials Association Scholarship: Two sportsmanship scholarships (1 female/1 male) will be awarded to selected students who live within a 75 mile radius of Sioux City. The winners will be students who exemplify superb leadership skills in great sportsmanship. Application Deadline: March 30, Winter Dance Party Scholarship--This new scholarship commemorates February 3, 1959-- the day the music died. This is the date that 3 rock n roll performers and their pilot were killed in an airplane crash in northern Iowa. Every year a Winter Dance Party is held which celebrates the music of the time and the music makers. Profits from the Party are used to fund the scholarship. To qualify for this scholarship, you must plan to major in music in college. You must write a brief essay explaining why you have chosen that major. Application Deadline: April 15, Iowa Choral Directors Association Scholarship to honor Leo Grether: This scholarship memorializes a gentleman who spent his life in music education. To qualify for this scholarship, the applicant must be a choral music education major, must send a tape of 2 performance pieces, and must write an essay about why he/she wants to be a vocal music teacher. Application Deadline: April 15, SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS..TYPE... The Bill Rodenborn FSC Memorial Scholarship--Your parents must be employees of a Farm Service Cooperative or stockholding members of an FSC. An application and short essay are required. Application Deadline--April 15, Learning Disabilities Association of Iowa Scholarship Program-- $1000 scholarships available for those students with a documented disability. A short essay is required. The award can be used at any school. Application Deadline--March 31, Crawford County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship--This $1500 scholarship is available to a student accepted for a full-time course of study leading to a diploma in a health-related field. Selection is based on need, grades, activities, interest in health field, references, and an interview. You must submit a photo with your application. This generous scholarship is even renewable one time for a college student. Application Deadline-- before April 1. The Denison Community Cultural Diversity Committee Scholarship--These $500 scholarships are offered to ethnic minority students from Denison High School who face limited access to future academic opportunities. An application, recommendations, and short essays are required.
Application Deadline--May 1, Robert D. Blue Scholarship--You are expected to demonstrate literary and scholastic ability, to have a sense of morals, and to be involved in your school and community. A 500 word essay is required on the topic Describe someone in your community who has demonstrated the responsibilities of being a citizen. You also need 3 letters of recommendation. $500-$1,000 scholarships (Last year, 65 scholarships were awarded.) The Car Council s Paul High Memorial Scholarship--$300 scholarships awarded to anyone planning to enroll in an automotive technology program. This would be a super opportunity for some of you still wondering what you want to do with your life.
