These stages must be completed in the order given below. To avoid damage to your computer system, it is also crucial that you finish all the steps in one stage before moving to the next. During part of the process, you will need to have all other programs closed and will not be able to read these instructions online. In addition, before you begin, it would be helpful to download any cleanup tools you will need in Stages III or IV. I. Updating your operating system Before you begin working with your antivirus software, make sure that you have installed the latest Windows Server updates. II. Uninstalling Norton or Symantec AntiVirus (including LiveUpdate): 9. 1 Close any open applications before you continue. Select Start. Select Control Panel. Double click on the icon that says Add/Remove Programs. Scroll down and highlight Norton AntiVirus or Symantec AntiVirus. When you are prompted to confirm that you want to remove this program, select Yes. Scroll to LiveUpdate and highlight it. Confirm that you want to remove the program. Restart your computer. III. Cleaning up after uninstalling Norton/Symantec programs You will also need to run one of the following cleanup tools:
NC State University 2 of 5 If you uninstalled the Norton or Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition distributed by NC State: Download NoNAV (http://www.ncsu.edu/antivirus/files/nonav.exe) and run it. You will need to have administrative privileges for your computer in order to run this. If you uninstalled Norton AntiVirus (a consumer or retail version, not the Corporate Edition distributed by NC State) or Norton Internet Security: Go to http://help.ncsu.edu/solutions/ncsu/323php and follow the instructions found there. You will need to use Internet Explorer and have Active X controls enabled in order to use this page as well as a Symantec page to which you will be directed. IV. Uninstalling other antivirus programs These are general instructions for uninstalling most antivirus programs. See your antivirus program's documentation for additional details. Close any open applications before you continue. Click on the Start button (usually in the lower left corner of your screen). Select Control Panel. In the Control Panel window, double click on the Add/Remove Programs icon. In the Add or Remove Programs window, scroll down and highlight the antivirus program you want to uninstall. If you are prompted to confirm that you want to remove this program, select Yes. If you are prompted to restart your computer now, choose Yes. 9. Visit the Web site of the manufacturer of the antivirus program. Download and run any available tools for cleaning up your computer after that program has been uninstalled. Repeat steps 1 through 9 for each of the other antivirus programs, if any. V. Installing SAV10 on Windows Server 2003 x64 Be sure that you have local administrative privileges for the server on which you will be installing this program. Make sure you are connected to the Internet. Open your Web browser. Download the antivirus program from http://www.ncsu.edu/antivirus/files/savwin6exe (You will need to log in with your Unity ID and password.) We recommend that you save this file to your Desktop. Close your Web browser and any other programs that are running. On your Desktop, double-click on the SAVWin6exe icon. This will self-extract in a hidden folder named %temp%. If you get a Security Warning message, select the Run button. When you get a message telling you that you are about to install the program, click on OK. 9. When the Self-extracting Archive window opens, click on Start. The program files will
NC State University 3 of 5 be put into a hidden temporary folder named %temp%. The installation process will begin automatically. In each window, accept the default settings (unless you have a specific need to change one of them) by clicking the Next button. 1 In the license agreement window, mark the button to accept the terms. 1 In the Setup Type window, make sure that the button for Complete is marked and click on the Next button.
NC State University 4 of 5 1 1 When the installation process has been completed, click on the Finish button. Once installation has finished, LiveUpdate should start automatically, though there may be a short delay. If it starts automatically, connect to the Internet and skip to Step 4 of the instructions for running LiveUpdate (below). If it does not start automatically, begin with Step 1 of those instructions. VI. Running LiveUpdate Make sure that you are connected to the Internet. Double-click on the yellow Symantec AntiVirus shield, located in the right-hand portion of your system tray (at the bottom of the screen). In the Symantec console window that opens, double click on the LiveUpdate button. Follow the prompts to download and install the most recent virus definitions and updates to the antivirus software. When the updating process has finished, the console window should show that the version of the virus definition file is no more than a week old. It may take a few seconds for the new date to appear. New virus definitions are provided by Symantec at least once a week and sometimes daily. Close the console window by selecting the Exit button. VII. Configuring your firewall ports Make sure that you have an active firewall. Open the folder in which the SAV10 files were extracted. The default is the hidden folder %temp%, which you can open quickly as follows: a. Press the Windows key (near the space bar). b. Type: r c. In the dialogue box that appears, type: %temp% d. Press Enter. In this folder, double-click on the file named xpsp2-sav10-firewall.reg. This will open
NC State University 5 of 5 the TCP/IP ports that are required for Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition and LiveUpdate to work correctly.
