Getting my ipad/keeping my ipad Why is the Cornell Executive MBA program providing me with an ipad? a. The Cornell Executive MBA is distributing ipads as part of a pilot program for the Class of 2014 and Class of 2015. Providing course material electronically has been the number one recommendation by participants. As stated, the use of ipads to deliver this electronic course material is a pilot project and we will be looking to elicit feedback on making improvements. In addition, this electronic platform will enable us to distribute course material quickly and efficiently. The ipad is not intended to be used for the bulk of the course work in the CEMBA program. For this, a laptop equipped with the Microsoft Office suite of products is required. When/Where do I get my ipad? a. If you were enrolled in the program before July 10 th, 2013, your ipad will be sent to your home. If you are enrolled after July 10 th, 2013, you will pick-up your ipad when you arrive at the Statler Hotel on Cornell Campus for your first Residential Session. What type of ipad will I receive? a. You will receive an ipad with Retina Display, 64 GB, Wi-Fi and with the GSM Cellular network option (3G/4G) installed. It will be up to you as a student to purchase the monthly service contract if desired. Will the Cornell Executive MBA program be paying for my 3G/4G data plan? a. No, the Cornell Executive MBA program will not supply 3G/4G data service. We recognize however that many people already have data plans and that you may need access when Wi-Fi is not available. The program has chosen a device that is 3G/4G capable should you choose to purchase a data plan at your own expense. Is there a warranty included? a. The ipad carries a two-year Apple Care+ warranty. Information pertaining to this warranty can be accessed at the following site. http://www.apple.com/support/products/ipad.html Do I need to return my ipad after I graduate? a. After successful completion of the program the ipad belongs to you. Do I need to return my ipad if I don t finish the program? a. Yes. What if my ipad is lost or stolen? a. You are responsible for replacing your ipad if it is lost or stolen. Your ipad may contain copyrighted content of CEMBA so your device will need to be remotely wiped. You will need to turn on Find my ipad in order to do this. Look at this link to see how to remotely wipe information off your ipad. http://support.apple.com/kb/ph2701 Can I upgrade my device when a new model comes out? a. Unfortunately, the program will not provide students with new models should they become available. However you are free to upgrade at your own expense. Before disposing of your device, you should seek the advice of the IT Help Desk in clearing personal and copyrighted materials from your ipad. 2

Will the program provide me with a different tablet if I prefer (i.e. Android, Surface, etc.)? a. No. After much research, the ipad was chosen as the tablet of choice for optimal integration with the program portal and with our third-party electronic materials provider (XanEdu). It is the program s opinion that you will have the most robust and enriching experience with the ipad, but you are free to utilize another tablet should you choose to purchase one at your own expense. 3

Accessing course materials How will course content be distributed and how will I be able to access it? a. Blackboard will be your source for retrieving all course content. You will be able to download a digital course pack that contains the readings for each course. There are 2 ways to download course packs: as PDFs to your laptop or to the interactive ipad app on your ipad. Training will be provided to assist you with this. Course slides and other material will also be found on Blackboard. What course content will I be able to access electronically? a. There are several types of course content that you will need to access while in the program. The most common forms of course material are: i. Required Readings (digital course packs) will be found in the XanEdu app or a textbook will be provided to you in hardcopy. ii. Presentation Slides will be found on Blackboard, under the course name and number within the course materials folder. Will any course material not be available electronically? a. Textbooks are currently not available in digital format. In addition, some cases and slides that are used during the residential sessions may be distributed in paper copy and this is at the discretion of the individual faculty member. Do I need an ipad to access the electronic course material in the program? a. No, there are multiple ways that you will be able to access course material. The ipad and supporting Apps will provide the best overall experience with the ability to highlight notes, annotate documents, share information with other classmates, etc. You will also have the ability to download a course pack for each course (in PDF format) for reference on your personal computer or laptop. Will I still need a laptop computer? a. Yes. The program requires you to have a laptop computer that is less than 2 years old and has Microsoft Office 2010 or newer installed. In particular, there are several courses that will require Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint programs. Will my digital course material expire once the program is finished? a. No, your digital course material will never expire. Course material provided through the XanEdu app will be yours indefinitely. Course material downloaded in PDF format to your laptop is available indefinitely, as long as you save a copy within 6 months of the course starting. 4

Using the ipad for coursework & general use Will ipads be permitted in the classroom? a. ipads will be permitted in the classrooms during residential sessions.. Will laptops be permitted in the classroom? a. Laptops will be permitted in class during residential sessions.. Can I use my ipad in the classroom to present to the class? a. Yes. The classroom will have an adapter for your ipad. It is recommended for all presentations to always have a backup device and to test the technology before class or during a break. What Apps should I be downloading to get the best experience? Required Apps 1. XanEdu is our third party provider of digital course packs. With the XanEdu app, you will be able to download course packs to display on your bookshelf (similar to how you would download a book from ibooks). Course packs will provide all necessary readings for each course. You will have the ability to annotate and highlight as well as share your notes with other participants in the class. 2. Blackboard is an app that all of your course material will be stored. You will be able to see all of your course materials here. 3. Chrome Your ipad does come with Apple Safari Web Browser, but there will be some websites that work better with the Chrome Web Browser. (is this required or recommended?) Recommend Apps 1. Box.net is a file-sharing network, which allows customers to save and store information on a cloud based website. 2. YouTube is a video sharing website, on which users can upload, view and share videos. During the program many professors will have videos of examples or case studies that will best viewed using YouTube. 3. Go To Meeting is webinar software App that many professors will use during tutorials or office hours. 4. Adobe Reader will allow you to read any PDF documents. How do I transfer or backup my personal files from my ipad? a. We have set up a secure cloud storage environment (https://cornell.box.com). Each student is given 10GB of storage space for their use. Please see the Portal ipad tutorials for information on how to setup and access your cloud storage. Printing course materials Will I be provided paper copies in addition to the electronic courses? a. Course packs will not be provided in hardcopy. Select materials and textbooks may still be provided in paper format. 5

Can I still print course materials? a. Yes. Students are free to print any course material at their own expense. The easiest way to print course materials will be by printing the material using your laptop computer. What if I have difficulty adapting to the course content electronically, will printed material be available? a. No printed material will be provided by the program. You will receive a hardcopy text book and the digital Course pack is available in a printable PDF file. Typically, you will receive your course material 2-4 weeks in advance of each course s start date. If you choose to print your course packs, it will be your responsibility to do so at your own expense. Please know printing facilities during residential sessions will be limited. 6
