5 ABOUT THIS GUIDE The Imagine Learning Client Setup Guide shows you how to set up Imagine Learning on the desktops and devices in your classroom and install a local Media Server. Imagine Learning runs on: Windows and Mac OS X desktops Android devices Chromebooks ipads Microsoft Tablets If you are using Imagine Learning on a PC or Mac desktop, you can install an Imagine Learning app or you can use a supported web browser to access Imagine Learning. (For information about supported web browsers for Imagine Learning, please review our System Requirements at support.imaginelearning.com.) You can find download links and instructions on how to install Imagine Learning apps by going to Device Downloads at support.imaginelearning.com. The Imagine Learning Media Server allows you to cache the media files that are required to run Imagine Learning software. This means that you can download and store these media files on any desktop where an Imagine Learning Media Server is installed. Caching these media files stores them in a location where they can be accessed more easily and quickly by the software. To determine if you should cache media files on your local desktop or device, check with your school or district IT administrator. Your IT administrator may have previously installed an Imagine Learning Media Server at the school or district level, or may prohibit local caching on user desktops or devices. Chromebooks do not support media caching. 1

7 DESKTOPS Before you begin Before you configure access to Imagine Learning on a desktop, complete these steps: Verify that the Imagine Learning Server has been installed and that it is available over your network. Ask your IT administrator if you should install the Imagine Learning Media Server on your local desktop and configure local media caching. Your IT administrator may have previously installed an Imagine Learning Media Server at the school or district level, or may prohibit local caching. Verify that you are using a recommended operating system and web browser on your desktop. See System Requirements at support.imaginelearning.com. All recommended web browsers must have the Unity Web Player browser plugin installed. Unity requires a DirectX 9 level graphics card. Imagine Manager also requires the Microsoft Silverlight browser plugin and a PDF reader. Depending on how your network s security is configured, you may need administrative rights to install a web browser plugin. If you do not have administrative rights to your computer, contact your school or district IT administrator for help. 13 MEDIA SERVERS Installing a local Imagine Learning Media Server The Imagine Learning Media Server allows you to cache the media files that are required to run Imagine Learning. This means that you can download and store these media files to a location where the Imagine Learning Media Server can access them quickly and easily. (For system requirements for the Imagine Learning Media Server, see System Requirements at support.imaginelearning.com.) To determine if you should cache media files on your local desktop, check with your IT administrator beforehand. Your IT administrator may have previously installed an Imagine Learning Media Server at the school or district level, or may prohibit local caching on user desktops. An Imagine Learning Media Server may alleviate network performance issues if you are running Imagine Learning in a web browser with the Unity Web Player plugin. You don't need an Imagine Learning media server if you are using an Imagine Learning standalone app on a workstation. If your IT administrator wants you to cache media locally, you will need to download and install the Imagine Learning Media Server on your desktop. The Imagine Learning Media Server can be installed on Windows or Macintosh operating systems, and the download files for each operating system are accessible on the Unity Web Player page at support.imaginelearning.com. This section explains how to install an Imagine Learning Media Server on a machine running Windows or Mac OS X.
