Stanmore Year 8-11 (2013) Laptop Setup Guide & Laptop Agreement To be ready to use your laptop at Newington you should be able to tick þ all of the following boxes. PREPARATION: LAPTOP AGREEMENT I have read the Laptop Agreement and ICT Policy and returned it, signed, with my Laptop, to the ICT Service Desk in Founders Building or the new Library. The Laptop Agreement is at the back of this Guide. PREPARATION: LAPTOP I have purchased a laptop with warranty protection I have a suitable case/sleeve SETUP (MAC): CASPER SELF SERVICE I have enrolled in Casper: (p. 3) I have clicked on the Self Service app and installed one of the Newington provided/recommended apps SETUP (WINDOWS) I have downloaded and installed the KACE agent: (p. 5) I have re-visited the KACE site and downloaded some software packages. 1

Preparation: Laptop For Term students need to have purchased a suitable laptop. Minimum specifications for those commencing the BYO stream (Stream 2) for 2013 are: 128 GB storage 4GB RAM Intel i5 processor or equivalent 5+ hours battery life Weight under Kg n built-in wireless Windows 7/8 or Mac OSX Mountain Lion (10.8) These specifications will be revised annually for those purchasing new laptops. The College has provided an Information Guide to help guide the selection and purchase process, including information about purchasing a laptop from the College partner provider, XciteLogic. Please consult the Information Guide if planning your purchase or for other Frequently Asked Questions. 2

Setup (Mac): Casper Self Service Apple maintains detailed manuals for their laptops at If you have questions about the setup we encourage you to download and read the various sections of the appropriate guide. Setting up a Mac laptop for the first time is relatively straightforward. Apple s most recent operating system Mountain Lion makes use of Apple s icloud service and App Store. If you have any questions about this process look out for an upcoming guide from the Newington ICT team. To obtain software applications for use at Newington you will enrol your laptop in the College server: Casper. WHAT IS CASPER? Casper Suite from JAMF software is a system to help us provide apps and settings to student-owned and College-owned laptops and ipads. WHAT CASPER DOES Casper enables us to: 1. Provide free and paid educational and productivity applications 2. Ensure particular settings are enabled so that the laptop will work optimally at Newington. ENROLLING IN CASPER To set up your laptop to be managed with Casper, open a web browser (e.g. Safari) and go to this web address: Login with your Newington login (number) and password. 3

Casper will send your browser a special application. Run the QuickAdd.pkg download. OBTAINING COLLEGE APPLICATIONS Apps to be purchased by the College under this program will include Office 2011 for Mac. In 2013 we also aim to provide access to the Adobe Creative Suite Master Collection applications including Photoshop, Illustrator and Premiere Pro. Once your laptop is enrolled in Casper a new app will be on the laptop: Self Service. Head to Applications > Self Service to see and install from College-provided apps. In December this may be a fairly basic list. Keep checking back as the 2013 school year approaches to see new apps. 4

Setup (Windows) - KACE WHAT KACE DOES KACE enables us to: 1. Provide free and paid educational and productivity applications 2. Manage particular settings so that the laptop will work optimally at Newington INSTALLING THE KACE AGENT FOR WINDOWS To set up your laptop to be managed by Kace, open a browser (e.g. Chrome) and go to this web address: Login with your Newington login (number) and password Under the Software Library tab, click on the first Software Title on the list called KACE Agent for Windows and follow the Installation Instructions. 5

You should see the following screen once the installation has completed. 6

OBTAINING COLLEGE APPLICATIONS Once your laptop has the KACE agent installed you should be able to install any available software title from the list under Software Library tab. Initially it may take up to an hour for your laptop to register with the KACE server so software may not be available to install immediately. If you experience this issue just try again later. All College-provided software available to install will appear in the Software Library section. Please check back periodically to check for any new additions. Also you can look for additional software downloads from the Knowledge Base tab where links to popular software items can be found. 7

Year Laptop Agreement This Laptop Agreement explains the obligations and responsibilities for all Year 8-11 boys at Newington in 2013 related to the use of Laptops for learning and communication. The attached form for this agreement should be returned to an ICT service desk, located in the Founders building and the new Library (Rae Building). As signed forms are received each student is provided with access to the College wireless network and details of the laptop are recorded. In addition to the attached ICT Policy (2013) the following should be noted: The College requires that all boys laptops remain enrolled in the College mobile device management systems. Students should not make any attempt to remove that software or any ICT identification stickers from the laptop. To minimise the impact on learning, in the event of a boy without Protecsure (via XciteLogic) mobile device insurance and/or current Dell/Apple premium warranty being without a laptop for more than two days, a loan laptop will be supplied to him from the ICT service desk. The cost for that service ($35/week or part thereof) will be applied to the boy s account. Student ICT Policy 2013 The College recognises that students will use a range of communication devices, resources and services, both College owned and student-owned. Boys are expected to use all ICT devices, resources and services responsibly, purposefully and ethically. Usage of devices, services and resources is always at the discretion of class teachers and other College staff. All boys are expected to take personal responsibility for maintaining possession of their device at all times on campus and to bring their device to class ready to learn: Boys are to have their devices charged and ready for use. Boys are to bring their chargers and necessary accessories daily. Devices should never be left unattended and are to be stored in lockers when not in use. Boys need to rectify any login or technical issues promptly and not during class time. 8

All boys are expected to carefully manage their data and their online College identity: Passwords should never be written down or given to another person; students will be held responsible for all activity undertaken using their login/password; Although the College takes care to backup server-based resources, keeping backups of critical files (e.g. assignment work) is each boy s responsibility. In the use of ICT devices, resources and services, all boys are expected to act with integrity, and use these services for educational purposes: Students should respect the holders of copyright, never plagiarise the work of others and always use appropriate referencing systems; Boys must not access or attempt to access inappropriate sites or resources; As with other non-ict areas, vandalism is always inappropriate; Unless specifically allowed by a teacher for educational purposes, the sending and receiving of text messages or phone calls and the use of social networking sites, gaming and services (e.g. Facebook) are strictly prohibited during scheduled class time. The College provides high speed Internet and provides filtering to protect students and help them stay focused on educational activities. Boys may not use personal 3G/4G mobile broadband hot spots to provide alternate Internet connections. In the use of ICT devices, services and resources, boys are expected to treat others and collaborative working environments with respect: It is never acceptable to digitally record (photo, audio or video) boys or teachers or distribute that information without permission from that person and your class teacher; Negative or defamatory information about other boys, staff or the College should never be posted online; the usual College rules and other laws and regulations still apply to bullying and harassment online; Boys must not access or try to gain access to private or sensitive information or the account of another boy or member of College staff; The equipment and services of the College and other boys should always be treated with care and respect; Boys are expected to follow appropriate etiquette and protocols when communicating with staff members and each other. 9
