ITW 2014 NEWSLETTER 2 Opening Keynote cont With more than 1,200 participants in the audience, the choice of Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, was certainly popular. And topical too as the audience had the chance to ask Sir Tim about his vision then and now, in this the 25th anniversary of the invention of the web. Sir Tim was interviewed by celebrated broadcaster Bill Kurtis and this year also offered attendees the chance to use the new Twitter boards and tweet questions direct to Sir Tim! In his lively opening speech and the interview following, Sir Tim shared with the audience that keeping the World Wide Web open is his proudest achievement to date. He underlined the importance of the work of the wholesale community in the development of the web. In his view, it s good to think about the internet as a utility because it is something that is very core to modern-day life. Tackling the challenges that are presented by the web today, as well as the opportunities, Sir Tim acknowledged that there is now a battleground to control the internet, with governments taking a bigger role in how people access the service. And with spying over the web becoming an increasing issue, he warned against political institutions using the technology for political purposes. ITW 2014 NEWSLETTER 3 CIL Panel Discussion Confidence, Innovation, Leadership Summit The conference sessions at ITW 2014 began with the unveiling of the results of the C100 survey, which outlined the views from the global wholesale leaders. 300 people were in attendance for the panel moderated by Bill Kurtis, and featuring a fantastic line up which included Daniel Kurgan, CEO, BICS, Shawn Henry, President, CROWDSTRIKE SERVICES, Holger Magnussen, SVP, DEUTSCHE TELEKOM ICSS, Dave Welch, Co-Founder and President, INFINERA, Denver Maddux, Senior Director, MICROSOFT and Will Hughes, Global Head of OTT, TELSTRA GLOBAL. On the thematic side, fraud and security concerns were at the forefront of the CIL panel discussion. Shawn Henry, President at CROWDSTRIKE SERVICES and former FBI director cyber division commented on the growing disconnect between the two in the industry, and warned that the risks for data theft could be on the rise, which will result in severe network consequences. During the panel it was also revealed that 82% of the carrier market surveyed sees the OTT market as an opportunity rather than a threat. The panel agreed that OTTs are driving new consumer behaviours, which are expected to generate more messaging and voice trends. "There's this large perception that OTTs think that all messaging is going over the top," said panel member Will Hughes, Global Head of OTT at TELSTRA GLOBAL. "But when we looked at some of our SMS revenues, they were remaining flat, if not growing in some parts."
