Raconte-moi : Les deux petites souris 1. Content of the story: Two little mice called Sophie and Lulu live in a big house in Paris. Every day, an animal knock at the door of their big house.if they like the animals, the little mice let them come in (e.g. the purple rabbits they find cute). If they don t like the animals, they don t let them animals come in (e.g. the black cat which looks scaring). At the end of the story, pupils have to find out: Qui est dans la maison? (Who is in the house?/ Which animals are in the house?) Combien d animaux sont dans la maison? (How many animals are in the house?) 2. Objectives : - Hearing and understanding a story in French (please click on integrated in the power point: all sentences are read in French by a native speaker) - Recognising familiar animals - Revising the numbers 1-12 - Revising the colours - Asking about likes and dislikes 3. Vocabulary: To make easier the work of primary teachers, here is a list of the vocabulary which appears in the story. - Action verbs Habiter à Paris/ dans une maison=: to live in Paris in a house frapper à la porte = to knock at the door (You will need to mime it so that pupils understand easily. De quelle couleur est.? => Engl. : What color is? De quelle couleur est le chat? Le chat est noir => The cat is black. Domino «Les couleurs» Teacher s note : First practise saying the colors with the class to make sure they all get the right pronunciation. Cut out the cards. Put the colors and the animals in pairs. J aime le bleu => I like blue. Et toi? => English : And you? Je déteste le bleu => english : I hate blue. J aime le vert / J adore le vert +> I like green / I love green. Note: J adore expresses a more intense feeling than J aime (bien). Je déteste expresses a more intense feeling than Je n aime pas Possible extension of the vocabulary Je préfère le rouge => I prefer red. The brown dog Le poisson rouge For more able pupils or upper levels in French Ask your pupil to formulate with their own words the rule: In French, I must put colour adjectives after the nouns. Exemple: un chat noir Extension with feminine animals in combination with a colour adjective This is not included in the story neither in the exercises, but you could introduce it if you want to. Gris=> grise / vert=> verte / violet=< violette / noir=> noire / bleu=> bleue/ blanc=> blanche la souris grise (let them hear the difference : un chat gris (you don t hear the «s» at the end / une souris grise (you hear the «s» as a /z/ at the end l araignée noire (You don t hear the e at the end, but you have to write it because of the agreement between the feminine noun and the adjective). SLIDE 29 Language structure : Aimer + LES + name of the animal in plural Est-ce que tu aimes les lapins? Do you like rabbits (generally speaking)? SLIDE 30 Language structure : Aimer + LES + name of the animal in plural + colour adjective (not in written form, only orally). Work in pairs and ask your classmate. At the end of the play, every pupil has to count how many animals he/she lets come in. Est-ce que tu aimes les lapins violets? Pupil: OUI, j aime (bien, beaucoup)/ J adore les lapins violets (Il s sont mignons). Entrez! Pupil : NON, je déteste les lapins violets! Extension with other adjectives like GRAND and PETIT Un petit chat => english : Un grand chien=> english : Une petite souris => english : Other adjectives in the story Mignon / mignonne : cute beau/bel/belle : beautiful super (invariable) Teacher s note: These adjectives have been introduced in the story like nursery rhythm to highlight and support a good the prononciation in French: super / hamster mignon / poisson beau : oiseau http://www.ifecosse.org.uk Page 4

Revise the colours integrated in both language structures Qu est-ce que c est? C est un chat. Oui, c est un chat noir. De quelle couleur est le chat? Le chat est noir (slides 23 + 24) Make clear that the pupils will have to name all animals which are the house Qui est dans la maison? /Who is in the house? and they will have to find out in French Combien d animaux sont dans la maison? (How many animals are in the house?) Mime as much as possible to make it easier to understand. Let pupils count together the number of windows (slide 6) Une GRANDE maison (gesture) Frappe à la porte: Toc! Toc! Toc (mime) Let them guess who /which animal would knock next at the door before showing the next slide (play with their expectations to include the pupils in the story telling and say : peut être (perhaps), on va voir..
