The successful candidate for this newly created position will possess a shared vision of the importance of technology in the delivery of modern public library services, and will be able to effectively communicate and implement that vision and related strategies. THE LIBRARY IN A CHANGING WORLD OF INFORMATION Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh (CLP) is in the midst of an exciting era. Library staff and customers have come to expect CLP to be a vital community resource that provides access to printed materials, programs, spaces and the latest technology. One of the areas of focus of our recently adopted strategic plan calls for CLP to develop a comprehensive plan to anticipate and respond to technological change. In this position, you will have the opportunity to work in an environment that values strategic direction, thoughtful exploration and superior service. You will work both collaboratively and independently to lead the Library in navigating established, new and emerging technologies, all of which are integral to our services. The Library enjoys strong relationships with local institutions of higher education, such as the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University, as well as with large and small technology organizations, including Carnegie Mellon s Entertainment Technology Center, Google Pittsburgh and the Idea Foundry. We can already point to numerous examples of how CLP is driving exploration and innovation with the creation of The Labs@CLP, My StoryMaker and a new library catalog interface developed using open source. CLP is a member of the Allegheny County Library Association (ACLA), and is committed to offering the best in library services to the region. With ACLA, CLP is the co-owner of einetwork, a locally-funded nonprofit dedicated to providing technology resources to all public libraries in Allegheny County. This position will work closely with einetwork to best utilize county-wide library resources. n
The Opportunity Reporting to CLP s President and Director, the Director of Digital Strategy and Technology Integration will coordinate system-wide initiatives related to digital strategy and technology, direct the work of the Information Technology Department and work to further our organization s digital transformation, ensuring that CLP is recognized as a trusted and relevant resource for our community. This position will inspire staff to keep abreast of cutting-edge technologies and develop mechanisms for communicating with and assessing the needs of both staff and community members. The Director of Digital Strategy and Technology Integration has the opportunity to shape and execute the use of technology in order to enhance the library customer experience in a changing library landscape. The person in this position will represent CLP in local, regional and national conversations related to libraries and technology. The essential functions of the position include: Provide strategic direction for the development of the Library s digital and technology initiatives, including, but not limited to, coordinating and prioritizing system-wide efforts, approving grant proposals and maintaining an overview of all technological/digital initiatives across CLP and within the einetwork consortium. Build and strengthen working relationships with agencies and key stakeholders to enhance, supplement and shape digital and technology offerings in Pittsburgh and Allegheny County. Articulate and advocate for the Library s position regarding access to eresources, including leading our involvement in local, state and national endeavors. Provide direction and expertise in digital library applications, including web development, emerging technologies and initiatives to help the Library innovate through technology, ensuring that virtual services are effectively and appropriately integrated with onsite services. Ensure discoverability and accessibility of all library resources through a variety of tools, such as the Library s website, OPAC (online public access catalog) and other emerging mechanisms. Address the current and emerging needs of the community and the profession by directing the development and delivery of technology training options/opportunities tailored to residents and their diverse learning styles and expanding the technical capacity of library staff so that the potential of both online and onsite services can be realized. Review and revise technology-related policies. Direct the work of the Manager of Information Technology and the IT Department staff to ensure the availability of all infrastructure elements, hardware devices, software and assistive technologies necessary to support creating, storing, managing and accessing digital content. Collaborate with the einetwork to identify and develop county-wide digital and technological initiatives. Work collaboratively with the Executive Directors of both the einetwork and Allegheny County Library Association to shape and execute a system-wide and county-wide strategy that will address the current and future technology needs of existing and potential library users. Lead and support all staff in implementing the related goals and objectives of the Library s strategic plan. Serve on the CLP Leadership Team.
This position requires extensive knowledge of current and emerging technology and its potential use in libraries; demonstrated project management success, including managing multiple and simultaneous projects; knowledge of public library operations, services and functions, and a commitment to further the Library s mission and awareness of integrated library systems and information architecture. The candidate must also have a proven record of visionary leadership and: An ability to persuade, engage and articulate a vision to a wide variety of audiences Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills The ability to recognize and set priorities, embrace and drive change initiatives, and to use collaborative and inclusive leadership skills An awareness of current eresource access issues facing libraries The ability to immediately provide leadership and positively impact the organization while learning the community and developing relationships Qualified applicants will have a minimum of five years of library or technology management experience or experience in a learning organization or related setting, including supervisory experience; a Masters in Information Technology, Library Science or related field is desirable; a documented combination of education and experience relative to the requirements of the position will be considered.
