1 **POSITION DESCRIPTION** THE 11th STREET BRIDGE PARK Communications and Community Outreach Manager The 11th Street Bridge Park, the first elevated park in the nation s capital, is searching for a Communications and Community Outreach Manager to help coordinate our external relations with nearby residents, funders and national press. This is a critical position as the organization prepares to launch a capital campaign to construct this innovative new civic space. This is an exciting opportunity to join the 11th Street Bridge Park team as its third full time staff. We are seeking a highly intelligent, creative individual with excellent communications, project management and public speaking skills as we engage the broader community. The Communications and Community Outreach Manager is responsible for setting the communications strategy for the 11th Street Bridge Park including coordinating community outreach efforts, marketing and external relations, working with the press, website, social media and advertising. The successful candidate will possess experience with most or all of the following: public speaking, community engagement, online content strategy and development, multimedia and social media production and management, communications, electronic database and content management, and web analytics. Responsibilities and Functions OUTREACH: o Manage on-going community outreach efforts including regular public presentations to community groups, business owners, funders and government officials. o Help plan regular programming to build project awareness such as collaborations with residents, local schools, festivals and presentations. Collaboration is key to this project s success.
2 o Build partnerships with organizations to assist with marketing, programming and outreach. o Manage and coordinate work related to Bridge Park s Equitable Development Taskforce COMMUNICATIONS/MARKETING: o Collaborate with team to improve all areas of Bridge Park s online presence, including programming, fundraising, online events, constituent relations, etc. o Develop web strategy including structure, site / content development, and deployment. o Author and edit original content for online communications channels. o Execute editorial plans via web site and other online channels. o Engage and expand existing supporters through regular blasts, blogs, social media platforms such as twitter and facebook, public presentations and outreach. Perform day-to-day website management duties including content updates, data management, development of web graphics and multimedia, and marketing. Thoroughly understand the 11th Street Bridge Park and how it operates; develop a comprehensive knowledge of its mission, programs, outreach and funding base. o Facilitate online initiatives, collaborating with internal and external partners to ensure programmatic, editorial, and development commitments are met. o Coordinate calendar and optimize blast performance. o Track and report web and social media analytics. o Manage and create video and audio materials. Ability to record and produce these materials and related applications is a plus. Qualifications and Requirements Bachelor s degree in Communications, Marketing, Technology, and/or related experience. Deep knowledge of adjacent 11th Street Bridge park communities in Wards 8, 7 and years of experience as a digital marketing specialist or web editor.
3 Excellent written (including editing and proofreading) and verbal communication skills, including the ability to understand and translate the 11th Street Bridge Park s mission and to develop complex written materials to summarize the essence of large scale projects and collaborations. Knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency in the use of software (Windows OS, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and the ability to use or learn technology used at the 11th Street Bridge Park, including Droople web management and Salsa software systems. Proven ability to manage a complex budget. Strong research and analytical skills. Ability to investigate an issue, ask thoughtful questions and recommend possible solutions. Able to build a logical approach to addressing problems by drawing on own knowledge and experience or by seeking other references or resources as appropriate. Able to set short-and long-term planning goals in line with program priorities and available resources. A task-oriented style, with a focus on achieving clear and ambitious goals. Demonstrated ability to meet multiple deadlines by maintaining a high level of organization while delivering a high quality work product. Able to develop and move projects forward with independence and autonomy and maintain attention to detail and thoroughness in completing assigned duties. Intellectually curious, creative and strategic thinker. Able to think out of the box, challenge conventional norms, and try new approaches. A team player with a high level of energy, enthusiasm, and dedication to the mission and objectives of the 11th Street Bridge Park. A commitment to working in a fast-paced, deadlinedriven, collaborative environment with shared goals and appropriate communication and coordination with colleagues. Sound judgment and integrity with discretion in handling and securing confidential information, as well as the ability to conduct oneself in a highly professional manner. This position will be expected to participate in evening and weekend programming such as festivals, community presentations and regular outreach events on as needed basis. About the 11th Street Bridge Park
4 As the old 11th Street river bridges that connect Washington, DC s Capitol Hill and historic Anacostia neighborhoods are being replaced, a local nonprofit organization, Building Bridges Across the River at THEARC in collaboration with the District government will transform the aged infrastructure into the city s first elevated park: a new venue for healthy recreation, environmental education and the arts. The 11th Street Bridge Park will span the capital s cityscape a soaring structure that will engage the local community and bring residents together from across the city. We are proposing to create a place unlike any other in Washington, DC one that supports the community s physical, environmental and economic health. The project has four goals: Reconnect the neighborhoods on both sides of the river Re-engage the community with the Anacostia River an incredible and irreplaceable natural resource Generate new jobs and economic activity Create a healthy community by establishing a safe place for residents to exercise and play In late summer 2013, staff launched a $1 million pre-capital campaign to support a nationwide design competition, full time staff, on-going programming efforts and plans to implement an economic development analysis and health impact assessment. To date over $1,000,000 has been secured. After a seven month design competition informed by more than 450 community meetings, the design team of OMA+OLIN was selected in October With the design in place, Bridge Park staff will launch a capital campaign to construct this new civic space. The D.C. City Government has committed $14.5 million towards this goal. The 11th Street Bridge Park provides an exciting environment and the opportunity to work with a highly talented team, engaged volunteers and enthusiastic community members. About Building Bridges Across the River at THEARC The 11th Street Bridge Park is a project of Building Bridges Across the River at THEARC. Opened in 2005, The Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus (THEARC) is a $27 million, 110,000 square-foot campus located on 16.5 acres in Washington, DC s Ward 8. Built and now run by nonprofit agency Building Bridges Across the River (BBAR), THEARC is home to ten of Washington, DC s best nonprofit agencies who work collaboratively under BBAR s
5 leadership to provide cultural arts, social services, health care, recreation and educational programs. THEARC features two buildings, classrooms, state of the art dance, music and visual art studios, a full service pediatric medical and dental clinic, meeting space, an organic community teaching garden, playgrounds, computer labs, libraries and THEARC Theater, a 365- seat community theater that is the only theater of its kind in Washington, DC s East of the Anacostia River community.
