Page: 4 1 Introduction to OxySense Gen III The OxySense Gen III Non-Invasive Oxygen Analyzer System is an optical measurement method for determining the Oxygen concentration in various media such as packages, headspace and liquid. The OxySense Gen III is available in two primary model series. The 300 series models utilize the user s PC to communicate with the Gen III instrument. The 5000 series models include an onboard PC to provide standalone measurements. The Gen III system can perform oxygen permeation testing of both packages and films, oxygen concentration studies in air or dissolved in liquid, shelf life studies and leak detection. The Oxygen concentration is non-invasively measured in packages and the measurement is reliable and repeatable. The OxySense GEN III systems comply with ASTM 2714-08. Fig. 1 The OxySense Gen III Non-Invasive Oxygen Analyzer Systems. The OxySense Gen III is ideally suited for use in R & D and quality assurance programs. It brings an easy, accurate, and low-cost method of conducting oxygen testing for modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), vacuum packaging, Oxygen scavenging, closure seal, PET bottle and product shelf-life studies.

Page: 6 2 Unpacking and Verification Upon receiving the OxySense Gen III system please ensure that you have received the following components: OxySense Gen III Instrument (5000 or 300 series) OxySense Gen III Operations Manual CD EasAlign reader-pen assembly with infrared detector Power Cable Flexible Keyboard (Gen III 5000 series models) Mouse (Gen III 5000 series models only) USB Mass Storage (Gen III 5000 series models only) Depending on your order, certain option items may also be included, such as: o OxyDot Application Kit o OxyDots If the unit you purchased is a 5000 Series, please proceed to Section 1 If the unit you purchased is a 300 Series, please proceed to Section 2
Page: 7 1 Gen III 5000 Series Models Please follow these instructions to ensure the 5000 series instrument functions properly once you have received it. Fig 1 OxySense Gen III 5000 Unpack the instrument and turn it around so that you are facing the back of the unit. Fig 2 The back of the OxySense 5000 Locate the power cord connection on the lower left of the back panel and insert the power cord. Turn the instrument around so that it now faces forward. Locate the fibre bundle and thermocouple connections on the faceplate (Fig. 3). Fig The fibre bundle and thermocouple connections Insert the metal fibre optic connector into the housing on the front panel. Rotate the nut by hand until snug. DO NOT USE PLIERS OR WRENCH TO TIGHTEN AS OVERTIGHTENING WILL DAMAGE THE CABLE. Connect the black temperature connector into its appropriate connection. Please note that there is an index notch to assist with proper alignment. A properly aligned connector will slide on easily. After it is in all the way, turn the locking collar by hand to the right to secure the connection 4. Connect the Keyboard to lower USB port located on the left side of the front panel Fig 4 (this is the Only USB port for the keyboard).
Page: 8 Fig 4. The keyboard connection The Mouse may be connected using any other available USB port (front panel, upper or any of the four on the back panel). If you are using a barcode scanner and/or print, printer, you may connect them to any other available USB ports. 5. Plug the instrument into a wall power outlet (100-240 VAC 50/60 Hz). We strongly recommend you use a surge suppressor as the interface between the unit and the wall power. This will help you protect your units and prevent unexpected power related events. Push the button labeled Power located on the right face of the instrument to switch on the unit. A green light on the button should be lit when turned on. (When Power is successfully turned on, a blue light should appear at the end of the pen briefly and then disappear.) 6. Once the standard Windows desktop appears, double click the OxySense Gen III icon to launch the program. 7. Your instrument is equipped with the new EasAlign Pen with an integrated capture switch Fig 5. This makes taking a measurement easy and efficient. All you need to do to take a measurement is position the pen directly over the OxyDot and click the button. Fig 5. EasAlign pen with integrated capture switch 8. Now you are ready to startup your system and start testing. PLEASE PROCEED TO SECTION
Page: 9 2 Gen III 300 Series Models Please follow these instructions to ensure the 300 series instrument Fig 6 functions properly once you have received it. Fig 6 Gen III 300 series Install the Gen III Software as described in the Gen III Installation Guide. After the installation is complete, unpack the unit and turn it around so the back of the unit is facing you Fig 7. Fig 7 Back of the Gen III 300 series Locate the power cord connection on the upper right of the back panel and attach the power cord Fig 8. We strongly recommend that you plug the power cord into a surge suppressor and connect the surge suppressor to an available wall power outlet (100-240 VAC 50/60 Hz). Locate the USB connection on the back panel and insert the square end of the USB cable. Attach the other end to the USB 0 port on your computer. Fig 8 Power cord attached to the 300 series 4. Page: 10 5. Insert the metal fibre bundle connector into the housing on the front panel. Rotate the nut by hand until snug Fig 10. You will now be asked to install the software driver for Gen III. Refer to the Gen III Installation Guide section 4.0 Driver Installation to install the Gen III driver. 9. After the driver installation is complete, start the Gen III by clicking the OxySense Gen III v1 Icon in the Desktop or go to Start -> Program -> OxySense Gen III and click OxySense Gen III v1. 10. Your instrument is equipped with the new EasAlign Pen with an integrated capture switch Fig 1 This makes taking a measurement easy and efficient. All you need to do to take a measurement is position the pen directly over the OxyDot and click the button. Page: 11 3 OxySense Gen III Operations Please note that the system date will have Day, Month and Year and the Time will have hour, minute and second. If the System Date format does not have all required Day, Month or Year components defined and System Time format does not have all required hour, minute or second components defined, the user can set the date and time format in the following manner: Date: The Date format can be changed by navigating to Window s Control Panel >> Regional and Language Option >> Regional Options >> Customize >> Date. Time: The Time format can be changed by navigating to Window s Control Panel >> Regional and Language Option >> Regional Options >> Customize >> Time. While executing the OxySense Gen III software, if the OxySense Gen III device is not connected, the software will display the following message with three options: 1) Retry 2) Continue 3) Abort. 1) Retry: Clicking this button will perform a rescan for the OxySense Gen III device. 2) Continue: Clicking this button will load the software without the OxySense Gen III device. 3) Abort: Clicking this button will end the execution of the software. 1 Background Correction For the best accuracy, a background correction is needed, especially when the signal level is low (20% of maximum signal level). The Background Correction is a reading taken first without the OxyDot followed by a reading with an OxyDot. The GEN III software automatically calculates the background correction. The background correction is only performed when the Gen III software is started. When the application starts, the following screen will be displayed within the Main screen:

Clicking the Capture button will close the Capture Oxygen window and the Main screen (Fig. 3) will be displayed with an Oxygen reading.

Status Message Fig Main Screen-1: Main Screen 1 On-Screen Keyboard 1 About Measured Oxygen Displays the Oxygen concentration measured in the units chosen in the View screen (%, mbar or ppb). Temperature The temperature reading is taken automatically via the infrared sensor built into the reader pen. However, if you wish to enter the temperature manually, it is possible to do so in the View screen with an accuracy of one-tenth of a degree. Calibration da/db The OxyDot calibration da/db numbers being used for the measurement. 4. Logging Button and Indicator The Logging button activates the Logging function and changes the Logging indicator from red to green. This feature enables the logging of real-time Oxygen measurement data for a specified Test. Click the Logging/Timer tab of the Main menu screen. Enter or select the Test Name with Sample Number in the Test Name field through Barcode, Keyboard or the Browse Active/All window. If you do not specify a Test Name
Page: 14 with Sample Number in the Test Name field of the Logging/Timer menu, the logging function cannot be enabled. After specifying the Test Name with Sample Number, click the Logging button. The Logging function will begin and the Logging indicator will be displayed in green. The specified Test Name with Sample Number will be displayed below the Menu 5. Timer Button and Indicator The Timer button activates the Timer function for automated measurements and changes the Timer indicator from red to green. Click the Logging/Timer tab of the Main menu screen. Locate the field on the left of the screen labeled Measurement Interval and enter the desired measurement intervals in seconds or minutes. The minimum time for a single reading is 1 second. Therefore, the minimum timer is 1 second. The initial default value is 5 seconds. After completing Step 1 above, click the Timer button to begin the measurements with the specified interval and the indicator will change from red to green. The Timer function can be cancelled by clicking the Timer button and the indicator will be changed to red. Note: Clicking the Timer button from any menu screen without setting the desired interval will default to the interval currently specified in the Measurement Interval field of the Logging/Timer menu. 6. Pressure The barometric pressure is measured automatically via a sensor built into the processor board. However, if you wish to enter the pressure manually, it is possible to do so in the View screen. 7. View Clicking the View button will open a new window to change the settings for Oxygen Reading Unit of Measure, Temperature, Calibration and Pressure. 8. Config Clicking the Config button will open a window to Lock/Unlock the Menus, Lock/Unlock the View window, Change Language, Serial Number, specify the Alert High/Low Oxygen and Activate the Permeation features. 9. Capture Clicking the capture button performs an oxygen measurement. If the Test Name with Sample Number has been selected from the Logging/Timer menu, clicking the Capture button will capture a new Oxygen reading, update the Log, update the Graph and save the Data Point in the database. If no Test has been specified, the new Oxygen reading will be displayed, the Graph will be updated but the data point will not be saved. 10. Status Message Warning or Error message related to the Oxygen measurement will be displayed in this field. 1 On-Screen Keyboard Clicking the On-Screen Keyboard button will open the On-Screen Keyboard.
Page: 15 1 About Clicking the? button in the Title Bar will display the following screen. This screen displays the currently installed OxySense Gen III software version. 3 Configuration Screen & Activate Permeation To open the configuration window, click the Config button in the Main screen. If the Configuration is locked, the button will be displayed as follows: If the Configuration is locked and you click the above Config button, a new window will be opened to enter the Password. a. Change Password: To change the Password, click the Change Password label to display the following screen:

Old Password: Enter the old Password in the Old Password field. b. New Password: Enter the new Password in the New Password field. c. Confirm Password: Enter the identical new Password in the Confirm Password field. d. Update: Clicking the Update button will update the system with the new Password. If the Old Password matches and the New Password and Confirm Password are identical, a message box will display Password Updated Successfully!. If the Old Password does not match the database entry, an error message will be displayed. If the New Password and Confirm Password are not identical, an error message will be displayed. e. Cancel: Clicking Cancel button closes the Configuration Password window. c. Cancel: Clicking Cancel button closes the Configuration Password window. d. OK: After entering the correct Password, clicking the OK button will close the Configuration Password window and display the Configuration window. You can change the Lock/Unlock Status of various elements of the system, Activate the Permeation features, specify the Language and set the Oxygen Low/High values.

If you select the Locked radio button and click the OK button, the Configuration window will be locked and require a password to open in the future. If you select the Unlock button and click the OK button, the Configuration window will be unlocked. The Config button image will be changed in the Main screen to the following to indicate a Password is not required to open the Configuration window. View You can change the Lock/Unlock status of the View screen. If the View is unlocked, the settings within the View window can be changed. If the View is locked, the settings will be visible in the View window but cannot be changed. Activate Permeation (For the 5000 series, the permeation software will be activated by the factory. For the 300 series, the permeation software is an option. If you have purchased the permeation software option you will need to proceed as described below). When you click the Activate Permeation button, the following screen will be displayed with the Registration Key for activating the Permeation functions.

Registration Key: The Registration Key must be provided to OxySense by phone or email to receive the License Key for activating the Permeation. OxySense will generate the License Key for the Registration Key provided by you and return the License Key to you through phone or email. b. License Key Field: After receiving the License Key from OxySense. The License Key must be entered in the License Key field of the Permeation Registration window as displayed below. If the License Key closed and Permeation Tab can be viewed The Gen III Logo will be replaced with Permeation feature is enabled. d. Cancel: Clicking the Cancel button will close the Registration Key window and the Activate Permeation registration will be canceled and the Logo will not be replaced. License Key field, click the OK is accepted, the window will be in the screen for Lock/Unlock. the Gen III-P Logo when the

Tab Screen The Tab screen allows you to Lock/Unlock the various tabs within the Main menu (Logging/Timer, Graph, Film/Package Permeation (if Permeation is Active), Calibration and Diagnostics). If the function is locked, the tab will not be visible on the Main menu screen and therefore the function is effectively disabled. a. Logging/ Timer Fig 9. Logging/Timer: If you select the Locked radio button, the Logging/Timer tab will not be displayed in the Main window. If the Unlocked radio button is selected, the Logging/Timer tab will be displayed and the function enabled. b. Graph: If you select the Locked radio button, the Graph tab will not be displayed in the Main window. If the Unlocked radio button is selected, the Graph tab will be displayed and the function enabled. c. Permeation: If the Permeation is Active, this section will be visible else this section will not be displayed. If you select the Locked radio button, the Film/Package Permeation tab will not be displayed in the Main window. If the Unlocked radio button is selected, Film/Package Permeation tab will be displayed and the function enabled. d. Calibration: If you select the Locked radio button, the Calibration tab will not be displayed in the Main window. If the Unlocked radio button is selected, the Calibration tab will be displayed and the function enabled. e. Diagnostics: If you select the Locked radio button, the Diagnostics tab will not be displayed in the Main window. If the Unlocked radio button is selected, the Diagnostics tab will be displayed and the function enabled. Serial Number Display the Gen III Serial Number entered during the installation of the software (300 series only). The Serial Number can be replaced if a replacement unit is provided in the future. If you enter an incorrect Serial Number in the Serial Number field, an error message will be displayed: Invalid Serial Number. 6. Language You can select the Language from the combination drop down box to display the screen labels and messages in the desired language. The default language is English. Currently, English is the only language available. 7. Enable Oxygen Alert You can specify if the Alarm should be enabled when the Oxygen Measurement is beyond the range specified in the High and Low Oxygen Alert fields. If the Enable Oxygen Alert check box is checked, it will enable the Alarm. If the Oxygen Measurement is outside the range specified in the Oxygen High and Low Alert fields, the measurement will be displayed in Red color with an alarm.

Oxygen Alert Low and High High You can specify the Oxygen High Alert level to display an Audio Visual Alarm and display the Oxygen reading in red if the Oxygen measurement exceeds the High Alert Level. Low You can specify the Oxygen Low Alert level to display an Audio Visual Alarm and display the Oxygen reading in red if the Oxygen measurement is less than the Low Alert level. 9. OK If you change any of the elements within the Configuration screen, click the OK button to save the changes in the registry and reflect the changes in the Main window. 10. Diagnostic At the time of executing the application, if an error occurs, while communicating with the Gen III device, the error messages can be logged by turning on the Diagnostics by checking the Turn ON Diagnostics check box. 1 a. If the Turn ON Diagnostics check box is unchecked, it will not log the messages. b. If the Turn ON Diagnostics check box is checked, it will log the messages if an error occurs while communicating with the Gen III device in the log file COMPORT_Log.txt and DG_Log.txt, which will be stored at the following folder path: GENIII/COMPORT. These folders will be created under the local drive where the OxySense Gen III software is installed. For example, if the OxySense Gen III software is installed in C: drive, the above log files will be created at: C:\GENIII\COMPORT. Cancel If you do not want to save the changes within the Configuration screen, click the Cancel button.

View-1: View Screen Oxygen View By This area allows you to choose which unit of measure to display the Oxygen measurement. The measured Oxygen concentration can be displayed in: a. Percent Percentage of Oxygen by volume including headspace measurements. If the Percent View By is selected, you may select the number of decimal places to display. 1 Decimal: If the 1 Decimal radio button is selected, a single digit will be displayed after the decimal point. 2 Decimal: If the 2 Decimal radio button is selected, two digits will be displayed after the decimal point. b. PPB To view the Dissolved Oxygen (DO) in parts per billion when the OxyDot is in equilibrium with the liquid. c. mbar To view the Oxygen partial pressure in millibars including the headspace. Temperature This area allows you to Hide or Display the Temperature in the Main screen. If the Display radio button is selected, the Temperature will be displayed in the Main screen. If the Hide radio button is selected, the Temperature will not be displayed in the Main screen.
Page: 22 Celsius/Fahrenheit This area allows you to select the Temperature display in Celsius or Fahrenheit in the Main screen. 4. If the Celsius radio button is selected, the Temperature will be displayed in Celsius in the Main screen. If the Fahrenheit radio button is selected, the Temperature will be displayed in Fahrenheit in the Main screen. Default Temperature This area allows you to enter a Default Temperature and select if the Default or Probe Temperature will be displayed in the Main screen and be utilized in the Oxygen calculation. 5. Enter the Default Temperature value in the Default Temperature field. If the Always Use Default Temperature check box is selected, the Oxygen calculation will utilize the Default Temperature value and the Default Temperature will be displayed in the Main screen. If the Always Use Probe Temperature check box is selected, the Oxygen calculation will utilize the real time Temperature value from the Gen III device and the Probe Temperature will be displayed in the Main screen. Pressure This area allows you to Hide or Display the Pressure in the Main screen. 6. If the Display radio button is selected, the Pressure will be displayed in the Main screen. If the Hide radio button is selected, the Pressure will not be displayed in the Main screen. Default Pressure This area allows you to enter the Default Pressure and select if the Default or Instrument Pressure will be utilized for displaying in the Main screen and be utilized in the Oxygen calculation. 7. Enter the Default Pressure value in the Default Pressure field. If the Always Use Default Pressure check box is selected, the Oxygen calculation will utilize the Default Pressure value and the Default Pressure value will be displayed in the Main screen. If the Always Use Instrument Pressure check box is selected, the Oxygen calculation will utilize the real time Pressure value from the Gen III device and that Pressure will be displayed in the Main screen. OxyDot Calibration This area allows you to Hide or Display the OxyDot Calibration in the Main screen. If the Display radio button is selected, the OxyDot Calibration will be displayed in the Main screen. If the Hide radio button is selected, the OxyDot Calibration will not be displayed in the Main screen.

When the Start Timer button is clicked the button name be changed to Stop Timer and the Timer LED will be displayed in green for automated measurements. To enable automated measurements, the following steps are required: a. Measurement Interval: You must enter the interval in the Measurement Interval field in either Seconds or Minutes. The Minutes/Seconds can be selected from the Measurement Interval combination drop down box. The minimum time for a single reading is 1 second. Therefore, the minimum interval can be set to 1 second. If the desired time between readings is greater than 1 second, enter the number of Minutes/Seconds desired. After entering the interval Measurement Interval field, click the Start Timer button. The automated measurements will process continuously as per the interval specified in the Timer until you click the Stop Timer button. b. Study: Allows you to specify the number of readings to be taken by the Timer function. Enter the specific number of readings to be taken in the Readings in Study field. The readings will be taken in time increments as specified in the Time Between Readings field. After completing Step 1, select the Perform a Study check box to activate the Study. Readings will not begin until the Start Timer button is clicked. Once the readings have begun, they will be taken in increments as specified and until the indicated number of readings in the Readings in Study field has been achieved. 5.7 Start Logging This button activates the Logging function. When the Start Logging button is clicked, the button name will be changed to Stop Logging and the Logging LED will be displayed in green. This feature enables the logging of real-time Oxygen measurement data for the specified Test Name with Sample Number.
Page: 39 Specify the Test Name with Sample Number in the Test Name field through Barcode, Keyboard or through the Browse Active/All window. If you do not select a Test Name with Sample Number, the Logging function cannot be enabled. After specifying the Test Name with Sample number, click the Start Logging button and the button name will change to Stop Logging and the Logging LED will be displayed in green. If the Logging Function is ON, the data points will be stored in the Database for the specified Test Name with Sample Number and the Graph in the Graph screen will be updated automatically. If the Logging Function is OFF, the Data Points will not be stored and only the single current reading will be displayed.

Calibration da/db - This area allows you to enter the OxyDot Calibration (da/db) to display in the Main screen and to be utilized in the Oxygen calculation. Enter the OxyDot Calibration da value in the da field and the OxyDot Calibration db value in the db field. Self-Calibration Clicking Get Low and Get High buttons will read an Oxygen measurement with a known Oxygen concentration sample to give the Ratio value. Once both values have been obtained, the new calibration values are obtained by clicking the Calculate New da/db button. A more detailed explanation of the calibration procedure can be found in Appendix B. Calculated da/db - The resulting Calibration value after obtaining the Ratio values in the Self Calibration menu. The Calibration procedure is described in Appendix B.

If you click the Yes button, the error stored in the database with the current error will be stored at the following folder path: GENIII\ErrorReport. These folders will be created under the local drive where the OxySense Gen III software is installed. For example, if the OxySense Gen III software is installed in C: drive, the above log files will be created at: C:\GENIII\ErrorReport. If there is a problem storing the error in the database, an error message will be displayed: Could not store the Error details in the Database. Do you want to Export the Error Log to OxySense?. If there is a problem retrieving the error from the database, an error message will be displayed: Could not retrieve the Error Log from the Database. Do you want to Export the Error Log to OxySense?. The file name will be ErrorLog plus current date in (ddmmyy format) for example ErrorLog_8-7-2008.CSV. Please contact OxySense Technical Service if the error persists. Be prepared to send the error log file to OxySense for further analysis.
Page: 47 4 Making Measurements Before making any measurements using the OxySense non-invasive oxygen measurement systems, the following preparation instructions must be read and followed. The OxySense instruments are designed for operation in a consistently illuminated environment. Testing should be conducted in the same light level environment for all readings. Otherwise, small variations in measurements (on the order of 0.2%) may be noted. 4.1 Preparing the Package or Container to be Measured Oxygen measurements within packages/bottles are made by first attaching an oxygensensitive sensor to the interior wall prior to filling and sealing. These sensors, called OxyDots, are shipped with the instrument and should be stored in a dark environment. The OxySense system analyses the interactions between the OxyDot and fibre pen to determine the oxygen concentration inside the package. The fluorescence can be measured through the transparent/semi-transparent package wall, the adhesive, and the substrate of the OxyDot. Some properties to keep in mind are: The OxyDot can be positioned as desired in liquid or headspace areas; Measurements can be repeated multiple times to obtain oxygen concentration in the same package; and The OxyDot must be glued in before filling and sealing the package. Use the following instructions to glue an OxyDot inside the package to be measured. Dispense a small amount of the supplied General Electric RTV 118 (or other suitable adhesive) into a disposable container. Using a glue applicator pick up a very small amount of the adhesive on the end and gently apply to the inside of the bottle where you wish to glue the OxyDot. Ideally this will be an easily accessible area for the reader pen assembly to reach on the outside of the container. The adhesive should be spread relatively thickly onto the inside surface in a small diameter, roughly equal to that of the OxyDot.
Page: 48 Pick up the OxyDot using the supplied vacuum pen with the coating side in contact with the pen. Press the black bar on the vacuum pen in and hold. Place the rubber tip onto the OxyDot coating side and release the bar to create a vacuum. Tip: Check both sides of the OxyDot to detect which side is reflective and shiny. This is the side without coating. Use the vacuum pen on the other side. When lifted, the OxyDot should remain on the tip of the pen. When transferring to the package, the pen should be inverted so that gravity keeps the OxyDot on the tip of the pen in case the vacuum is lost. 4. Gently press the OxyDot to the adhesive on the inside of the container. Be sure to move swiftly before the adhesive begins to cure. It is recommended that General Electric RTV 118 be used because of its low viscosity, transparency, short cure time, and high oxygen permeability. The silicone rubber will dry in approximately 90 minutes. Fig. 4.1 The OxyDot is glued to the inside wall of a transparent package with silicone rubber RTV 118 and the aid of the vacuum pen. The coating is now facing the inside of the package and sensor readings can be made from the other side of the wall. The light path is shown as a blue (excitation) and red (fluorescence) arrow. 4.2 Preparing the System for Use Once the OxyDot has been glued into the package, the system must be set up to capture oxygen readings. Follow these directions closely to ensure accuracy of the system. Turn the OxySense system on and start the OxySense Gen III software. Perform the background correction as described in section
Page: 49 Sample temperature is a very important element in the accuracy of the system and therefore is included in the measurements when made. The OxySense System automatically records the temperature when a capture is made. Manually entering the temperature is not required unless an application requires one to do so. 4. Click on the calibration tab, and in the fields marked da and db, enter the factory-provided calibration numbers for the OxyDot you are analyzing (return to the Main tab). 5. Click on the view button, select the unit format (Percentage, PPB or mbar) in which you would like to have the oxygen concentration reported and return to the main screen. 4.3 Taking a Reading Place the reader pen directly over (almost touching the package) the OxyDot from the outside of the transparent package wall. Illuminate the centre point of the film and hold steady. For ease of use, use a clamp and ring stand to hold the fibre pen and take the package to it for alignment. Figure 4.2 gives an idea of a typical setup. Page: 50 5 Permeation Measurements If the Permeation feature is enabled from the Configuration window, the Gen III-P logo will be displayed on the Top with the Film and Package Permeation Tab, if Unlocked is selected for Permeation within the Configuration Window. Cancel: If the Cancel button is clicked, the New Chamber Serial and Test will not be added to the database and will return to the Main screen. 5.2 Adding a New Test for an Existing Chamber To create a New Test for an existing Chamber, the prior Test must be closed. Please make note that once you have Ended a Test, you can no longer add additional readings to that Test. If the Open button displays an Oxygen Permeation Test Name when the Chamber Serial Number is entered, the previous Test has not been Ended. You must End the prior Test before attempting to open a New Test using the same Chamber. Enter the Unique Serial Number of the Chamber by scanning the Chamber Barcode or enter the Serial Number of the Chamber through the keyboard. Click the Open button. If there are no open Tests for the Chamber, a message box will be displayed: Do you want to add New Test for Chamber Serial Number: A0000-100009?.

Log: Displays the Data Points for the selected Test and Chamber Number. If the View By is selected in PPB or Percent, the user can select the Data Point in PPB or Percent. However, selecting the Data Point in PPB or Percent will actually utilize the associated mbar value for the same Data Point and enter within the empty Starting or Final Data Point. 8. Delete Data Point: To delete a Data Point from the Log List, select the Data Point from the Log List and click the Delete Data Point button. Clicking the Delete Data Point button displays the following message: Are you sure you want to Delete the Selected Data Point. Clicking the OK button deletes the selected data point and removes from the Log List and Log Graph. If a data point has not been selected prior to the click of the Delete Data Point button, an error message box will be displayed: Select the Data Point from the Log List. 9. Rate: This option will display a log list of Permeation Rate values with their date and time. Graph: a. Oxygen: This option will display a graph of Oxygen values versus Time. (as shown in Fig. 5.11). b. OTR: This option will display a graph of OTR values measured during the Oxygen capture versus Time. c. Perm. Rate: This option will display a graph of Permeation Rate values versus Time.

If the View OTR By is changed and you click the OK button, the Setup window will be closed and the OTR value will be calculated and displayed per the new selection in the Film Permeation Log or Graph screen. 8. 5.8 Cancel: Clicking the Cancel button will close the Setup window. Timer Clicking the Timer button will start automatic capture for the selected test. automatic capture will be performed after the specified interval of time. The If the interval value is not specified and the Timer button is clicked, it will give a message to enter a valid value for Timer Interval. If any invalid data point is captured during automatic capture, the error message will have two buttons Yes and No and it will ask to stop the timer or not. Clicking the Yes

When any tab is selected other than Film Permeation, the Timer will be stopped automatically. 5.9 End Test Please make note that once you have Ended a Test, you can no longer add additional readings to that Test. To End a Test, identify a specific Chamber Serial Number based upon the options noted above and click the End Test button. If the End button is clicked without entering anything in the Chamber Serial Number field, the application will display an error message: Chamber Serial Number cannot be blank. If the End button is clicked and the Chamber Serial entered is not in the database, the application will display an error message: Could not find the entered Chamber Serial Number. If the selected Chamber Serial Number and Test Name is active, clicking the End Test will display a message box: Are you sure you want to End the Test : For Chamber Serial Number :? You will not be able to capture additional data points for an ended Test.. If the Yes button is clicked within the message box, the Chamber Serial Number and the Test will be Ended. If the selected Test Name is already Ended, clicking the End Test button will display an error message: Test is already ended. 5.10 Print Report To Print the Permeation Report, identify a specific Chamber Serial Number based upon the options noted above. Automatic capture will be performed after the specified interval of time. If the interval value is not specified and the Timer button is clicked, a message to enter a valid value for Timer Interval will be displayed. If any invalid data point is captured during automatic capture, the error message will have two buttons Yes and No and it will ask to stop the timer or not. Clicking the Yes button will stop the timer and clicking the No button will continue the automatic capture. When any tab is selected other than Package Permeation, the Timer will be stopped automatically. 5.8 End Test Please note that once you have Ended a Test, you can no longer add additional readings to that Test. Page: 95 7 Appendix A Principles of Operation A.1 Introduction The OxySense Gen III-P is a Non-Invasive Oxygen Determination (NIOD) instrument for the partial pressure of (dissolved) Oxygen that is based on the effect of Oxygen on fluorescence lifetime of an optically excited Ruthenium complex immobilized in a highly stable polymer. The partial pressure of Oxygen is derived from the fluorescence lifetime of the Ruthenium complex. Optical Oxygen sensors are more attractive than conventional amperometric devices (Clark-type) because they do not consume Oxygen, are not easily poisoned and have a fast response time. Moreover, optical technology allows the Oxygensensitive coating to be kept separated from the rest of the instrument. OxySense technology permits measurement of the Oxygen concentration within a relatively transparent object by placing disposable sensors inside, all without opening the package to be measured. The sensors have been proven to be stable at high temperatures and can withstand harsh environments. A.2 Oxygen Sensitive Coating (OxyDot ) Oxygen sensing based on fluorescence is well established. The typical indicators used are Ruthenium complexes and porphyrins, both of which are compatible with low cost light emitting diodes (LED s). In the Oxygen sensitive coating, the OxyDot, Tris (4,7 biphenyl 1,10 phenanthroline) Ruthenium Chloride is used due to its stability, long lifetime and strong absorption between 400 nm and 500 nm in the blue region of the spectrum. The absorption peak is compatible with high brightness blue LED s or blue semiconductor lasers. The emission peak is at 600 nm in the red region of the spectrum and is detected by a photomultiplier tube to offer the flexibility of a large dynamic range and fast response time. The Ruthenium complex is immobilized in a highly chemically resistant substrate. The hydrophobic nature of the polymer imparts a degree of selectivity in the sensor response by excluding nongaseous water-born quenchers from the sensing membrane. The sensors made with this membrane polymer exhibit a linear Stern-Volmer response that has been attributed to the greater homogeneity of the Oxygen-quenching environment created around the Ruthenium complex within the sensing membrane. This linear Stern-Volmer response to Oxygen makes it possible to use a one or two-point calibration procedure. The OxySense Gen III-P Analyzer System utilizes an optical methodology that determines the Oxygen concentration within a sealed package by measuring the fluorescence generated upon illumination of an Oxygen-sensitive film (OxyDot ). The

A.3 Dynamic Quenching Process The principle of fluorescence quenching is based on the excited state characteristics of a specific dye. Dynamic quenching is the transfer of energy from a fluorescent dye in its excited state to Oxygen in the surrounding medium. The energy consumed by Oxygen will be dissipated as heat after a short time and the whole process can repeat itself indefinitely without consuming Oxygen. The process of dynamic quenching is illustrated in Figure A.

Short pulses (1 µs) of blue light from the LED are absorbed by the Ruthenium complex. In the absence of Oxygen (figure 3a), the Ruthenium complex will emit light in the red region of the spectrum. The average time between the absorption of the blue photon and the release of the red photon is called the fluorescence lifetime. The fluorescence lifetime of the Ruthenium complex in the OxyDot is about 5 s. However, if Oxygen is present (figure 3b), the fluorescence is quenched. This occurs when Oxygen molecules collide with the excited Ruthenium molecules. During the collision, energy is transferred from the Ruthenium to the Oxygen, preventing emission. This process is called dynamic quenching, and it results in a decrease in the fluorescence lifetime proportional to the Oxygen partial pressure. The fluorescence lifetime will decrease from 5 s in an Oxygenfree environment (e.g. Nitrogen) to 1 s in ambient air. The most important aspect of using quenching for Oxygen detection is that neither the Oxygen nor the sensor is consumed during a measurement.

This effect is shown in figure 4. The typical fluorescent lifetime varies between 1 s in ambient air (po2 = 212 mbar at sea level) and 5 s in zero Oxygen. From the averaged signal, corrected for the background, the fluorescence lifetime can be derived.

However, the OxyDots can be calibrated by you with the Calibration tab in the main menu.
