They said Dynamic duo Toni Worton and Jay Kumar are excited to have finally opened their own unisex hair salon, Visual Impact & Perceptions (VIP), on Marske Road, Saltburn, after obtaining hairdressing qualifications at Redcar & Cleveland College. Although Toni and Jay went to college together with the intention of one day owning their own business, they never thought it would happen so quickly. Jay said: I went to college purely to achieve qualifications and certificates, but I gained so much more besides. I am now qualified in cutting women s hair, as well as men s, but so much of what the College gave us could never be illustrated with a certificate. Toni was keen to learn more about the business management side of the industry. She said: Our tutors were incredible. They advised us on setting up our own salon and encouraged us every step of the way. We certainly learned so much more than hairstyling skills. Hairdressing tutor Emma Ogleby is thrilled to see Toni and Jay s plan come to fruition. She said: At the College we are keen to nurture an entrepreneurial spirit and do all we can to help. It s great to see young people having the confidence to go it alone. The valuable skills and knowledge Toni and Jay gained whilst on their course at the College have made them keen to take their business further. They are hoping to expand in the future, to include a beauty salon, and are also offering complete portrait and wedding packages, including professional photography and makeovers. Jay Kumar Our tutors inspired us to go it alone and gave us the confidence to realise our dreams. They made us appreciate that we could achieve our goal. 4 www.cleveland.ac.uk 01642 513200
