A educatioal assistat is a perso hired to support the work of professioal staff, such as teachers ad cliicias. Educatioal assistats are valued members of the school commuity. They make a sigificat cotributio to the work of the school ad toward the educatio of all studets. Educatioal assistats work withi school ad school divisio policies ad practices. Their roles are determied by the eeds of the school divisio. Their day-to-day activities are directed by the pricipal, teacher, or other professioals uder whose supervisio they work, ad ca be as varied as the teachers ad studets they support. t h E E d u c a t i o a d M i i s t r a t i o a c t Persos havig care ad charge of Pupils regulatio, M.r. 23/2000* Persos who may have care ad charge of pupils 1(1) the followig persos may have care ad charge of pupils: (a) a school cliicia; (b) a paraprofessioal employed by the school board to work with teachers ad pupils as part of the teachig-learig process; (c) a studet teacher; (d) a voluteer; (e) a perso who has bee authorized by the school board or its delegate. What do Educatioal assistats do? Educatioal assistats assist i keepig studets egaged i the rage of activities that take place i the learig eviromet. These activities, for example, may be academic, social, or related to specific studet eeds. They ca take place i a variety of situatios ad settigs, ragig from group work to idividual pursuits, ad from readig ad writig to paitig, drawig, ad workig with objects. Classroom activities ad lessos require a teacher s plaig, orgaizatio, schedulig, ad coordiatio. Educatioal assistats may be asked to assist the supervisig teacher with this preparatory work. This extra pair of eyes ad hads ca be ivaluable to the smooth fuctioig of the classroom. The classroom ca be a active, fast-paced work eviromet. Educatioal assistats respod to the eeds of the studets as well as the teacher ad/or school team i a timely ad appropriate way. By keepig the lies of commuicatio ope with members of the school staff, sharig iformatio, ad givig ad receivig feedback, the educatioal assistats support teachers i the high volume of activity ad chage that takes place i a typical workday. The day-to-day tasks of educatioal assistats ofte ivolve several resposibilities. They may be expected to operate ad maitai specialized devices, equipmet, ad techologies. They may be required to assemble, orgaize, ad costruct support materials as directed by the teacher while attedig to oe or more studets. This requires orgaizatio ad the ability to multi-task. Sometimes studets require practice, time, or support to feel that they ca perform a task. Educatioal assistats assist studets by explaiig, demostratig, ad modellig the skills ad attitudes ecessary to ecourage ad support learig as facilitated by the teacher. Educatioal assistats should be familiar with studets specific learig eeds ad prefereces. This ca help build positive relatioships with studets, which icreases the effectiveess of studet learig support. Educatioal assistats help classroom teachers with the supervisio of studets, which ivolves followig supervisio timetables ad plas based o school guidelies ad procedures. It also ivolves cotributig to studet safety, reiforcig a positive, welcomig eviromet, ad resolvig situatios that may pose a risk to studets or compromise their educatioal opportuities. Educatioal assistats also idetify safety issues ad take prevetive measures, by followig established safety policies ad procedures. The supervisio of studets also ivolves providig support i everyday activities ad ecouragig positive studet iteractio. Some studets, for example, may ot be fully aware of the dagers their actios might pose. Educatioal assistats watch for potetial problem situatios ad prevet escalatio of coflict wheever possible. Uder the directio of teachers ad other professioal staff, educatioal assistats assist studets who require ogoig, log-term support through plas developed specifically for them by a i-school team. Educatioal assistats may be called upo to work together with members of a idividual studet s i-school team. While the compositio of this team will vary accordig to the idividual studet s eeds, it typically cosists of those people who are ivolved with the studet o a daily basis at school. Studets with specific plas work toward outcomes that are specific to their learig eeds. Examples of these specific plas iclude IEPs (idividual educatio plas) BIPs (behaviour itervetio plas) ERPs (emergecy respose plas) IHCPs (idividual health care plas) Beig familiar with the purpose ad the termiology of these plas will help clarify educatioal assistats resposibilities. A studet with physical eeds may eed a wheelchair, for example. A visually impaired studet may eed the ogoig support of Braille traslatio. Other eeds may ot be as costat. A studet with metal health eeds may require the admiistratio of medicatio for a period of time. Some studets will have multiple eeds. Skills related to programmig for studets with exceptioal learig eeds are called studet-specific competecies. A competecy is the ability to perform a specific skill or set of skills related to a work assigmet uder the directio of a teacher or other professioal. Examples of studet-specific competecies are cotaied i Appedix B. The samples i this appedix are iteded to provide suggestios for areas of educatioal assistat traiig.
