A UNIVERSITY IN THE HEART OF BRUSSELS Saint-Louis University, Brussels, formerly known as the Facultés universitaires Saint-Louis, is located in the heart of Brussels, a cultural hub of world renown, and capital of Europe. Saint-Louis is a prime example of an urban campus enjoying innumerable benefits from its host city; benefits for its teaching and research, and cultural and recreational benefits for its students. S aint-louis University, Brussels, began life as a School of Philosophy in 1858. Today, with more than 2,900 students representing 60 nationalities, we count ourselves as one of the principal centres of excellence in the human sciences in Brussels. Our university is composed of three Faculties and an Institute : THE FACULTY OF PHILOSOPHY, LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES, AND HUMAN SCIENCES THE FACULTY OF LAW THE FACULTY OF ECONOMICS, SOCIAL AND POLITICAL SCIENCES, AND COMMUNICATION Saint-Louis offers first-cycle (Bachelor s), second-cycle (Master s and Advanced Master s), and third-cycle degree programmes (doctorates and doctoral training), as well as a range of lifelong and executive courses. SAINT-LOUIS UNIVERSITY BRUSSELS RESEARCH University teaching is built on the foundation of a continuous research effort. Scientific discovery is the lifeblood of University teaching, ensuring it stays relevant and up-to-date. S aint-louis has 15 Research Centres, spanning the entire spectrum of the human sciences, including economics, law, criminology, political science, sociology, anthropology, literature, history, linguistics, and philosophy. Our participation in a range of national and international networks is testimony to the strength of our research. Much of our research is conducted on a contractual basis, as part of the public sector research effort, including for Belgian, European and international research programmes, and also on a contractual basis for private organisations. At Saint-Louis we pride ourselves in our distinctive interdisciplinary approach to research, and we have put in place a research network and two research Institutes, which provide an interface between our Research Centres: the Interdisciplinarity and Society Network (RIS), the Institute of Interdisciplinary Research on Brussels (IRIB), and the Institute for European Studies (IEE). ACADEMIC CONFERENCES Every year, more than 100 colloquiums, study days, seminars, conferences, and debates are held at Saint-Louis. These include, for example, the Chaire Francqui (a programme of thematic conferences led by a scholar at the cutting-edge of the field) and also the study days that are organised by the School of Religion and Philosophy, or by Saint-Louis Research Centres. 3

4MULTILINGUALISM MULTILINGUALISM: A STRATEGIC EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVE At Saint-Louis we seek to be open to the world. As part of our international strategy, we have developed bilingual and trilingual programmes of study. Our students also have the opportunity to study an additional language, chosen from a wide selection, and we encourage them to take part in an international exchange programme. We currently offer more than 60 exchange destinations in and beyond Europe. MULTILINGUAL PROGRAMMES Saint-Louis offers bilingual (French- Dutch and French-English) and also trilingual (French-Dutch-English) programmes in: LAW ECONOMICS AND MANAGEMENT BUSINESS ENGINEERING POLITICAL SCIENCES SOCIOLOGY AND ANTHROPOLOGY INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION Courses taught in English or Dutch are given by lecturers who are either native speakers, or whose own qualifications were gained in English or Dutch. Our multilingual programmes are open to ambitious students, and offer three main benefits: they broaden cultural horizons they improve students chances of being selected for a foreign exchange programme they enhance employability and career prospects.

A WIDE RANGE OF LANGUAGES TO CHOOSE FROM SAINT-LOUIS UNIVERSITY BRUSSELS In addition to the language classes that are an integral part of all Saint-Louis degree programmes, students have the opportunity to learn an additional language, which they can choose from a list of 22 languages offered by Saint-Louis in collaboration with the Institut libre Marie Haps. FRENCH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE COURSES French courses are available for non-native speakers who have a strong command of the language. The aim of these courses is to enable students to follow university courses taught in French. STUDENT MOBILITY AND EXCHANGE PROGRAMMES Saint-Louis students can participate in an exchange programme during their third year of study. Currently, we offer three types of exchange programme: ERASMUS for universities in the European Union, ERASMUS-Belgica for exchanges with Dutch languagespeaking Belgian universities, and we also have exchange agreements with non-eu universities. GRANTS TO STUDY A LANGUAGE ABROAD We offer grants towards the cost of language study courses in a foreign country during holiday periods. We also support student participation in diverse international events and activities (such as model UN conferences for students, and observation of the work of supranational courts). 5

Saint-Louis University, Brussels, is a member of BOReAL, which is a network of libraries from the Académie Louvain. We are currently working with our BOReAL partners on the introduction of a joint catalogue. As a member of the network, Saint-Louis enjoys access to more than 13,000 electronic scholarly and other periodicals, as well as to a number of human sciences databases. Moreover, thanks to a partnership agreement between the universities in the French-speaking Community of Belgium, enrolment in one university confers, without additional formalities, full access and borrowing rights in the others. It is also possible for Saint-Louis students to access and borrow resources from certain Hautes Ecoles with which Saint-Louis University has a partnership agreement in place.
