FLASH PROCEDURE for GSM BENTEL and DSC cards Following step are intended to properly update the flash memory of the GSM card. The same procedure will guide you to recover a GSM card after a block due to a flash failure. Please follow all steps starting from the 1 st one. Please note: For some operations (e.g. software and driver installation) Administration rights are required on the computer in use. A Serial Port (RS232) is supposed to be available on the computer in use. Otherwise an USB/Serial Adapter must be installed. We recommend to use a native RS232 with a NULL modem cable. 1 Software Installation Installation package is composed of 2 files: TycoFlashUtilitySetup.msi and setup.exe. To start installation double click on setup.exe You will be guided through the installation procedure by the Wizard. Press Next to continue Then you will be prompted to choose the installation path for the Flasher. Then you will have to specify if this software will be available for all computer s users or only for the installer (with Administrator rights)
Then press Next to continue All needed information have been given. When Next will be pressed the installation will begin. And will be completed when the following situation is shown. Then press Close.
Now a new icon will be available in the computer s desktop. The flasher will be launched by double clicking that Icon named Tyco Flash Utility. At the 1 st use of the software, User will be prompted to chose if use the flasher for BENTEL or DSC GSM cards. Now you will be brought to the begin of the actual flashing operations. Press ok to start The User will be now required to power down the GSM module, connect the Serial Cable (NULL modem cable is strictly required), put jumper on the PRG pins on the card and power it up.
Now will be necessary to specify the COM port in use for Serial Communication and the path where the update file can be found by the flasher software. For details on how to identify the COM Port in use, refer to the separate COM Port Guide The COM port can be selected (as shown above) by a scroll menu while the Browse key will allow the User to find the *.flash file to be written in the GSM card s flash memory.
If you don t have the latest *.flash file and you have an internet connection available, you can choose the Web key and the software will download the file directly from Bentel servers. The software will ask the User to save the *flash on the computer in use. Once saved, just press Next key Now the software will check propriety of communication between computer and GSM board, software version and device type. If something of previous steps have been incorrectly done, the User may face the an error message like the following Sometimes it may depends on communication errors caused by the USB/Serial adapeter in use. In those cases, it will be enough to press the Retry key (highlighted above in red) to overcome it. When all settings are done properly, the User will see the message Ready to Program as below
Then press Next button to proceed to program the flash memory. User will now see the progression of flash operations Once the flash procedure is completed the software will report it and the User will be advised to power down the GSM card and to remove the jumper from the PRG pins. Then switch on the card again. The User will be now requested to confirm the understanding of the needs to remove the jumper from the PRG pins
Now the flasher software will check for last time the programming procedure has finished properly and will show it to User. Once again, a communication problem between USB/Serial adapter and GSM card, may occur.
If the communication problem is limited to an episodic misalignment between the USB/Serial adapter and GSM cards, it will be enough, as done above, to press the Retry key to overcome it. Now the GSM card programming/updateing session is completed.
