Phone scenarios covered: A. Access with a hard-wired house phone connected to a completed, properly wired OnQ telecom system. B. Access with a cordless house phone connected to a completed, properly wired OnQ telecom system. C. Local access with a phone part of a hardwired phone system. D. Remote access with a hard-wired phone not part of a PBX phone system. E. Remote access with a hard-wired phone part of a PBX phone system. F. Remote access with a cellular phone. NOTES: 1. Tone phones must be used. The HMS won t recognize a rotary or pulse tone phone. 2. Make sure that Phone control hasn t been disabled in the set-up menu under the dial page. 3. (A) Accessing with a house phone: 1. When lifting the hand set you should hear a dial tone followed by a clicking sound. This should take about 1 second. 2. Press the (#) pound key. 3. A digitally recorded voice will prompt you, Welcome to OnQ, area 1, please 4. Select the desired option and follow the voice prompt. (B) Accessing with a cordless phone: 1. Pick up the cordless phone and wait for a dial tone or select the function that yields a dial tone. Wait about 1 second, you might hear a clicking noise. 2. Press the (#) pound key. 3. A digitally recorded voice will prompt you, Welcome to OnQ, area 1, please 4. Select the desired option and follow the voice prompt. (C) Local access with PBX phone system. 1. Dial the phone number that the HMS system is connected to 2. Let the phone complete one full ring. As soon as the second ring starts hang up the phone or end the call. 3. Wait 10 to 15 seconds 4. Troubleshooting: NOTE 1: Please read the notes covered on the scenario page before reading these notes. NOTE 2: There will be one question followed by four answers (A,B,C & D) these will correspond with the above mentioned phone control methods. If any of the letters are absent they do not apply to the question. Q. When trying to access the HMS from inside the house you hear a busy signal or a message stating, If you would like to make a call please hang up and try again later. A. The phone is connected ahead of ( see Fig. 1 ) the HMS causing the (#) signal to go to the outside phone company and not the HMS. This could also be caused by not having the HMS plugged into the RJ-31 jack at the telecom module or having the HMS RJ-31x cable assembly plugged into the Line In jack of the telecom module. B. The phone is connected Ahead of ( see Fig. 1 ) the HMS causing the (#) signal to go to the outside phone company and not the HMS. This could also be caused by not having the HMS plugged into the RJ-31 jack at the telecom module or having the HMS RJ-31x cable assembly plugged into the Line In jack of the telecom module. Q. When I pick up a hard wired house phone to access the HMS I hear the click, push the # sign and the system hangs up. A. Check the polarity of the house return line located at the HMS ( brown & gray wires ) and switch them if necessary. The brown wire should be Tip + and the Gray wire should be Ring -. This is assumes the house phone jacks are wired 568A standard and have been tested. B. Some cordless phones and phone systems transmit to short of a tone burst when pressing a key. If the tone burst can t be adjusted a different phone will have to be used. B. Check polarity of the house return line located at the HMS ( brown & gray wires ) and switch them if necessary. The brown wire should be Tip + and the Gray wire should be Ring -. This is assuming that the house phone jacks are properly wired. OnQ Technologies Revision 1.0 6

Q. When I use a house phone that is connected to the PBX phone system I don t hear the voice menu when I press the # key. B. Make sure you have a local dial tone and not a system dial tone. C. When you have a local dial tone and the # key doesn t activate the voice Menu the tone burst from the phone system might be too short or the phone System might not be hooked up to the HMS. Q. When I try to access the HMS via a remote hard wired phone not part of a PBX another device answers. This assumes that you can locally access The system. D. Make sure all other devices connected to the same phone line as the HMS is Set to answer at 3 rings or more. D. Try the remote access procedure (E) Remote access with a cellular phone. Q. When I try to access the HMS via a remote phone connected to a PBX phone System the HMS doesn t respond. D. Assuming the system can be accessed locally and that you have a outside dial tone on the phone system the problem could be that the Tone bursts of the PBX are too short. E. Make sure all other devices are connected to the same phone line as the HMS are set to answer at 3 rings or more. Q. I can t access the HMS via cell phone. F. F. You might have greater than a 1 ring delay between the cell phone network and the land line network. Therefore you might have to end the 1st cellular call after 1 Ring.
