A Bridge to the World Come with us. There s so much to enjoy! The world speaks English, but why? The spelling is difficult. The pronunciation is impossible! Why does a quarter of the world speak English? The answer is simple. The British Empire takes this language to every continent. English is the language of the United Nations and the European Union. It is the international lingua franca for air and sea travel, business and the Internet. It is the language of sports competitions and pop music. This language is a bridge to the world. English-speaking countries In every corner of the globe there are Englishspeaking countries. They speak English with a different accent. They drink tea and play cricket and they have the British monarch as head of state. We want to look at these countries and introduce you to their culture. 1. Britain We all recognise London when we see the famous clocktower Big Ben, the River Thames and Tower Bridge, but we want to tell you about some unusual British houses. We can learn about the food of this country and what schools are like there. Many sports started in Britain and they are now popular in India, Australia and New Zealand. 2. The USA Fly with us across the Atlantic to the United States of America. Here we can learn about the natural wonders and read about famous landmarks like the Statue of Liberty in New York. We can see the cable cars in San Francisco and read about Barack Obama, the first African American President. 3. Canada Then we travel north to Canada. It s a big country. It has 6 time zones! We can learn about the native people the Inuit, and visit cities where people speak French. Canadians love the Maple Tree. The Maple Leaf is the national flag of Canada and Canadians put maple syrup on their pancakes! 4. India 90 million people speak English in India. We can read about Gandhi, a political and spiritual leader of India, and look at the Taj Mahal, the famous white marble palace. 5. New Zealand There are two islands in the South Pacific where there is a famous rugby team the All Blacks. The landscape of New Zealand is beautiful. Film directors love it for its natural beauty. 6. Australia Let s travel to the other side of the world to a land that is a country, an island and a continent. You can recognise this country when you see the Sydney Opera House, or Australia s strange and unique fauna. Festivals around the world People all over the world love festivals. St Patrick s Day is an Irish festival, but it s popular in the US and Australia. Hallowe en is an ancient celtic festival, but it s very popular in the US and people celebrate Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, all over the world. 4 four

Great Britain Geography 02 Great Britain is a large island. It is an island made up of three countries: England, Wales and Scotland. The United Kingdom (UK) is Great Britain and Northern Ireland. London is the capital of England, Great Britain pital ital of o Scotland and the UK. Edinburgh is the capital es. es and Cardiff is the capital of Wales. Sometimes people say Britain me e and not Great Britain. The name Britain comes from Britannia and goes back to Roman times. Great Britain is surrounded by seas on all sides. The North Sea and the English Channel separate it from the European continent. It is 1,000 kilometres from north to south and 500 kilometres at the wide part of Britain. No town or village is more than 120 kilometres from the sea. The mountains in Britain are not very high. Ben Nevis in Scotland is 1,350 metres high and Snowdon in Wales is 1,100 metres high. The mountains in the north of Scotland are called the Highlands and British people call the Pennine Chain, that runs down the middle of England, The Backbone of England. There are many rivers in Great Britain. The Thames is an important river. It flows through London and into the North Sea. The River Severn is 354 kilometres long. 6 People speak English all over Britain, but in Wales many people also speak Welsh. In Scotland some people speak Gaelic. The British currency is sterling. There are 100 pennies in one pound. The flag of the UK is called The Union Jack. It is a union of the crosses of St George (England), St Andrew (Scotland) and St Patrick (Ireland). six

Parliament Parliament is made up of three parts. The Queen The House of Lords The House of Commons The Queen Britain has a Constitutional Monarchy. The Queen rules symbolically. Parliament passes laws in her name. The House of Lords Some Lords have inherited family titles and some have titles because of their work. The main job of the House of Lords is to check new laws. The House of Commons The British people elect Members of Parliament (MPs) to the House of Commons at a general election. The leader of the government is called the Prime Minister. 1 02 Ascolta e leggi il testo Geography e poi rispondi alle domande. 1 How many countries are there in Great Britain? 2 What is the capital of Scotland? 3 How high is Ben Nevis? 4 What do British people call the Pennine Chain? 5 What river flows through London? 6 What language do many people speak in Wales? Houses in Great Britain 03 Most houses in Great Britain are made of stone or brick. The colours of the stone vary across the country. The stone in Edinburgh is grey and the Cotswold stone near Oxford is a warm sandy colour. Britain has many types of houses and lots are very old. Walking down a street in Britain you can go past Victorian, Georgian, Tudor and modern houses mixed together. In large cities people live in apartments that are called flats. Flats usually have 2 or 3 bedrooms and a communal garden. In most towns there are streets of houses in long rows that are called terraced houses. They usually have two floors, but some that are called town houses have four floors. They have a basement, a raised ground floor, a first floor and an attic. They sometimes have small walled gardens. British houses do not often have balconies. Semi-detached houses are popular in Britain. This is when two houses are joined together, each with their own front door, garden and garage. Detached houses are separate from other houses and have gardens that go right round the house. 8 eight 1 03 Ascolta e leggi i testi Houses in Great Britain e poi abbina la descrizione delle case (1-7) al proprio nome (a-g). 1 An apartment a semi-detached house 2 An independent house b oast house 3 A house joined by one wall c flat 4 A house joined by two walls d houseboat 5 A house with a straw roof e terraced house 6 A house on the water f detached house 7 A house with a pyramid roof g cottage

03 Cottages Britain is famous for its cottages. They are small houses in the countryside and some have thatched roofs. These are roofs of straw and people replace the thatch every 12 years. Old cottages have small, low rooms and fireplaces and are very cosy in winter. Many cottages have beautiful gardens. 03 Houseboats Some people in Britain live on houseboats on rivers or canals and in London there is an area of canals, called Little Venice, where there are lots of these homes. The houseboats are painted in bright colours and often have a terrace with plants and flowers. 03 Oast Houses Visitors to Britain often do not know what these strange pyramid shaped houses are. They are farm buildings used for drying hops, the essential ingredient for making beer. The oast houses have three or four storeys where the hops are dried. Today farmers do not use oast houses for this kind of work. Many oast houses are homes. A Nation of Gardeners British people love their gardens. They look after their lawns and sweet smelling and colourful plants and flowers. Many gardens have a pond and some have a kitchen garden where they grow herbs and vegetables. Lots of people have a patio with a table and chairs, but because the weather is so bad, they can t eat in the garden very often. 2 Rispondi alle domande. 1 What are houses in Britain made of? 2 What houses have thatched roofs? 3 Can you find cottages in cities? 4 Where can you find houseboats in London? 5 What can you find in an English garden? 6 Why can t English people eat in the garden very often? What do British people eat? 04 Traditional British food is based on beef, lamb, pork, chicken and fish. They serve this with potatoes and other vegetables. Typical foods include the sandwich, fish and chips, pies like the Cornish Pasty and Trifle. Some main dishes have strange names like Bubble and Squeak and Toad in the Hole. Cornish Pasty It is a pie that comes from Cornwall. The original pies are for farmers working in the fields. They are half savoury and half sweet. The farmers eat the meat and vegetable half first and then the sweet part. Trifle This is a dessert made with sponge, fresh fruit, jelly, custard and cream. Bubble and Squeak This is a meal made with everything left from a previous meal. Meat, mashed potatoes and vegetables. 04 Breakfast Most people around the world think a typical British breakfast consists of eggs, bacon and sausages. Nowadays a typical breakfast is a bowl of cereal, a slice of toast, orange juice and a cup of tea or coffee. In winter people eat porridge. This is boiled oats. 04 Lunch Many children at school and adults at work have a packed lunch. This is usually sandwiches, some crisps, some fruit and a drink. They put the packed lunch in a plastic container. On Sundays the main meal of the day is at midday. It is usually a roast lunch with Yorkshire Pudding, roast potatoes, vegetables and gravy. 1 04 Ascolta e leggi i testi What do British people eat? e sottolinea le informazioni sbagliate nelle frasi seguenti. 1 Traditional British food is based on beef, lamb, pork, kitchen and fish. 2 Trifle is a dessert made with sponge, fresh fruit, jelly, custard and bechamel. 3 Nowadays a typical breakfast is a bowl of cereal, a slice of bread, orange juice and a cup of hot chocolate. 4 A packed lunch is usually sandwiches, some crisps, some cheese and a drink. 5 Sunday lunch is usually Yorkshire Pudding, roast bananas, vegetables and gravy. 6 The British eat a lot of potatoes and tomatoes in many different ways. 2 Completa la tabella con le informazioni mancanti. Afternoon Tea 04 Dinner A typical British meal is meat and two veg. One of the vegetables is usually potatoes. The British eat a lot of potatoes in many different ways. Nowadays people in Britain have an international diet. They often have Italian food one night, Thai food another night and British people s favourite food is Indian. British people have afternoon tea at around 4 o clock. It can be a small meal and not just a drink. It consists of a pot of tea with freshly baked scones. You eat the scones with thick cream and strawberry jam. Sometimes people eat thinly sliced cucumber sandwiches. In Britain people drink tea with milk and sometimes sugar. JAMIE S SCHOOL DINNERS Yorkshire Pudding This is not a dessert, but is part of the main course. It is made from flour, eggs and milk and it is baked in the oven. People eat Yorkshire Pudding with roast beef and hot gravy. Lunches at school in Britain are called school dinners, but the young chef Jamie Oliver doesn t think they are very healthy. Children eat lots of chips and junk food and they don t eat fresh vegetables. Jamie has a television programme where he goes into the kitchens of a school in Greenwich in London and shows the cooks how to improve meals at school.
