Young-shin Ahn studied in Seoul Art High School in Korea for a year and went New York. She studied in Juilliard Pre- College and received a Bachelor s Degree in Mannes College of Music. She had master classes with numerous musicians in U.S, Germany, France and Italy. She has been teaching many students since 2005, regardless of ages and capacities. Currently, She is a principal and a tutti member of many Orchestras and a member of IEUM Ensemble. She is also teaches students who want to take ABRSM exam. Ms. Lu has performed with such renowned musicians as Katy Lansdale, Marcy Rosen, Bright Sheng and Hartford Symphony. A founding member of the Sylvanus Ensemble and the 016 New Music Ensemble, she recently completed a concert tour in Taiwan and several performances in Connecticut, USA. Ms. Lu is the 2nd price winner of New York Artist International Competition and performed in Lincoln Center, NYC. Ms. Lu has also participated in master classes with Emerson String Quartet, Timothy Eddy, Slovatcri Serghvsky and the Miami String Quartet. Ms. Lu received her Master s Degree and Artist Diploma at The Hartt School, University of Hartford, where she was awarded a full-tuition scholarship to be a member of the chamber music program, Performance 20/20. As a teacher, Ms. Lu has taught in Taiwan and the United States. She is a registered Suzuki Cello teacher with the Suzuki Association of the Americas. Ms. Lu is a former faculty member of Northern Connecticut Community Music School in the United States where she served private lesson teaching as well as leading cello group class. Ms. Lu teaches at SFS on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Currently she is a lecturer at the Daegu Art Music University and Joongbu University and has been teaching lessons at SFS since 2005. And she has been teaching flute at National Tax Administration and Korea Development Bank as a part of donation of talent since 2006. Ms. Lee is also a member of the La Fiontana Flute Ensemble. Flute Instructor: Ms. Young Hee (Liz) Choe Young Hee Choe has earned B.M in flute performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where she studied with Timothy Day (San Francisco symphony principle) M.M in flute performance from Northwestern University under Professor Walfrid Kujala (former member of Chicago symphony). She previously taught at Head-Royce school in Oakland California, and currently teaches flute and piano privately. She has performed with many orchestras and performed chamber music throughout the states. She also has won numerous awards, including a Young Musician Foundation, 2nd place in Fremont Young Artist Concerto competition, 1st place in SCMF (Southern California Music Festival), Korea times music competition and 1st place in Burlingame solo music competition. She has also studied at music festivals including the Aspen Music Festival, Julius Baker master class. She is currently a member of the National Flute Association and Korea Flute Educators Association. Ms. Choe teaches at SFS on Fridays and Saturdays. Graduate from the Conservatoire National de Région of Paris (Conservatoire Supérieur de Paris) and of Boulogne in Flute, Chamber music, Music Theory and Music Analysis, she worked as a music instructor in several conservatories in Paris teaching students of all ages from beginners to high level players aiming to enter the high level conservatories. She won a numerous National and European Flute Competitions and had been the 1st flutist at the Paris-Sorbonne Orchestra for 5 years. In parallel, she studied Musicology at the Paris-Sorbonne Université (B.A and M.A) and received her Ph.D. with distinction in Ethnomusicology. As a flute instructor, she wants to share her passion and joy for music with students. She encourages students to develop a solid basic technics so that they can play any kind of music comfortably, as well as have a good comprehension of the music they play. Ms. Sun Young Park graduated Gacheon University majoring in oboe and finished soloist course at Rotterdam conservatorium and was a music substitute at MKIS(KL) for 4 years. Mrs. Park currently teaches at SFS for the time being. Mrs. Park is available for instruction at SFS on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. In addition, she offers private home instructions on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Her teaching experience includes 20 years of private piano lessons, 15 years of directing adult and children s choirs, and 9 years of teaching general music. Her main goal is to teach children to enjoy and love music by incorporating movement and singing to private piano lessons. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano performance from San Jose State University, California, and a Master s degree in Choral Conducting from Joong Ang University in Seoul Korea, where she studied with an internationally renowned choral conductor, Yoon Hak Won. Piano Instructor: Ms. Sung-ah (Hannah) Kim Ms. Kim studied in London for ten years receiving both MMus and BMus degrees from the Royal Academy of Music and her early musical education was at the Purcell Specialist s Music School and Royal Junior College of Music. She studied with Kathryn Stott and Aaron Shorr and appeared in various solo and chamber music concerts including recital at the Bolivar Hall in London organized by the Venezuelan Embassy and piano duo performance at the Purcell Room in collaboration with the London Sinfonietta. She received the Nancy Dickinson Award from the Royal Academy and also received LRAM (Licentiate Royal Academy of Music) piano teaching qualification during her undergraduate studies. She has been teaching piano performance, music theory, sight-reading and aural to students from various nationalities from complete beginners to high level players, incorporating ABRSM curriculum, tutor books for beginners, and various music selections from popular classical albums. She enjoys working with young musicians and her students have made good achievement including distinctions in ABRSM exams. She is currently at the Yonsei University D.M.A (Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance) course. She has been teaching piano to SFS students from elementary through high school since 2003. She also played accompaniment for the Elementary and Middle School Music concerts for 9 years. Mrs. Shyn teaches students at various levels, from beginner to advanced, and caters to the individual needs of each student. For the textbook, she uses Alfred s Basic Piano Course Books and holds piano recitals for her students every semester at school. Mrs. Shyn has two kids, both of whom graduated from SFS. Piano & Theory Instructor: Ms. Julie Lee Julie Lee studied in the US, received a Bachelor s Degree in Piano Performance from Eastman School of Music and a Master s Degree from University of Southern California. She has been teaching many students regardless of their ages or capacities over 10 years. Her students have been successful in the ABRSM (Associated Board of The Royal Schools of Music) exams. She has held students piano recital every year at school. She also has been working as a music substitute teacher at SFS since 2008. Ms. Lee is available at SFS on Mondays through Fridays from 3 to 6 pm. She worked as a music teacher in middle school for 9 years and served as a choir director for 5 years and piano accompanist for over 5 years at the Seoul Union Church. Ms. Park s experience as a private teacher since1988 has given her a mature level of teaching skills which has proven effective for most students regardless of their age or capacities. The main focus of her instruction is to help students draw enjoyment out of music from themselves and express that in playing piano. Ms. Park also assists students to build a balanced basis in sight-reading, rhythm, theory, and technique. Ms. Park teaches at SFS on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Piano Instructor: Ms. Oh Nu Ri Ms. Oh has earned her Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from Oberlin Conservatory and a Master's of Music degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy at the University of Michigan. While there, she was a full scholarship recipient and taught piano classes for undergraduate students (Graduate Student Instructor) and was a teacher of the Piano Pedagogy Lab Program. where she taught ages from 7-16)) Ms. Oh had her Debut Piano Recital at Kumho Art Hall in 2013 and currently teaching at Baekseok University and SIS as an after school piano teacher. She has been teaching various levels from beginners to advanced students. Along with performances, she engages in other musical activities such as theory, sight-reading, techniques etc. The most important thing that Ms. Oh focuses on is communicating with her students and enjoying music together. Ms. Oh teaches on Tuesdays and Fridays at SFS and available for home instruction on Mondays and Saturdays. For piano instruction, the students will experience marked improvements in their piano playing through understandings of the two essential elements in piano playing. Of these two, the first thing is to understand music as a musical language and learn the musical grammar. The second thing is to know the needed muscles in piano playing and how to incorporate them to the piano playing with the least effort in order to effectively transfer what we hear in our mind into the sound. Pianist Myeongjin Shin has received her Bachelor of Music degree at Juilliard School, Master of Music degree at Mannes College and Artist Diploma at School of Music at Yale University. While attending Yale, She has given piano instructions to non-major students of Yale University and presently she is teaching piano and other music-related subjects in several different music colleges in Korea such as E-wha Womens University and Dan-kook Unversity etc. While in U.S.A she has won numerous scholarships and awards and among them are the prizes from Frinna Awerbuch International Piano Competition and Artists International. She has given numerous solo recitals and performances in world famous Halls such as Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, Weil Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Wien Saal at Mozarteum, etc. Currently she is performing actively in Korea in such halls as Se-jong Chamber Hall, Kum-ho Art Hall, Seoul Arts Center, etc. Ms. Shin is available for home instruction on Mondays and Fridays late afternoon to evening and during weekends. She has been teaching various students with wide range of ages and levels for over 8 years. Since 2004, she has been working with young students as a music instructor at Gyeseong Elementary School. As an orchestra and ensemble player, she performs with many orchestras and ensemble groups in Seoul. She was the first chair at the Goyang Philharmonic Orchestra and principal at the Royal Symphony Orchestra. Now, she is a member of The Players Quartet and I-neo Quintet. Violin/Viola Instructor: Mr. Kum Joung You Kum Joung You studied music at a young age. After high school, he continued his musical studies in the United States, attending the State University of New York, majoring in violin performance. Mr. You continued his education at The Hartt School, where he received a Master s of Music in violin performance in 2009, a Graduate Performance Diploma in Viola in 2011, as well as an Artist Diploma in Viola performance in 2013. Among the numerous scholarships and awards Mr. You has received the Harry King Award, and the Juliet Rosch Award. He is also a two-time winner of the Hot Spring Music Festival Violin Competition, Seoul Philharmonic Viola Tutti Audition finalist, and New York Artist International Competition 2nd prize, and performed in Lincoln Center NYC. Mr. You is a registered Suzuki violin and viola teacher with the Suzuki Association of the Americas. He has studied Suzuki pedagogy with renowned Suzuki teacher trainer, Teri Einfeldt, former chair of the SAA. He has taught students age through adult using his knowledge and skills in Suzuki pedagogy. Mr. You is a former faculty member of Northern Connecticut Community Music School in the United States where he served an advanced level violin and viola teacher using both traditional and Suzuki method. In addition, he directed the Vivace chamber ensemble, preparing high school and middle school age students for serious musical study in their future years. Several of the students in this group have earned acceptance into regional and district festival orchestras as well as summer music camps, such as the prestigious New England Music Camp. She has taught at University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia as a visiting senior lecturer until April, 2011. Dr. Lee has more than 10 years of teaching experience. For the past 5 years, she had been teaching at University of Seoul, Baeseok University, Kangnam University, Sunhwa Art School, Kaywon Art School. She had also taught at Michigan State University CMS, Charles Stewart Mott College, and Flint institute of Performing Art for about 5 years in U.S. As a performer, she has played in many orchestras and given many solo, duo, chamber recitals, and lectures abroad in U.S, South Korea, and Malaysia. Currently, she is a concertmaster at Viva Musica and chamber 'Milal'. She also has served as the SFS Middle School Orchestra Director from 2012-2014. She loves God and loves to communicate with children through music. She is available for instruction at SFS on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Mr. McCann has taught in several schools in the US. He has performed at Summer Festivals and is currently Concertmaster of Insiem Orchestra. Mr. McCann s students can expect a challenging, yet fun learning environment with emphasis on technical development and music making. Each student is encouraged to work on scales and/or etudes as well as an appropriate solo piece, including emphasis on intonation, becoming familiar with different positions and melodic phrasing. Voice Instructor: Ms. Young Hee Kim Ms. Kim studied in the United States for over 11 years, receiving both Master s degree of Music and Doctor s degree of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance from the University of Maryland where she won numerous scholarships. As a full time international NATS member and visiting teacher at Gyeonggi-Suwon International School, Ms. Kim has been teaching different levels of singers from beginners to high level performers. As a choir director, performer, and passionate instructor in the USA and South Korea for over 20 years, Ms. Kim s beautiful voice tone quality was recently awarded as a finalist in the Art Song Division of the American Prize in Vocal Performance. Ms. Kim s goal, as a voice teacher, is to enlighten her students use their voices more easily and beautifully, thereby supporting them to experience greater joy in singing and to build on success through their vocal growth. Ms. Kim s students will participate in an annual recital to share the beauty of music with others. While at the SMMT she has been featured in leading roles in productions such as, The Wizard of Oz as Glinda, Jesus Christ Super Star as Mary and Annie as Grace, receiving 2 nominations as Rookie of the Year at the Korea National Awards in 05 & 07. A graduate from Catholic University of Korea in Seoul, Mrs. Lee has been featured in performances at the Blue House before the President of Korea. She has also been featured in ARTE TV and at the movie Harmony directed by Kang Dae Gyu, by dubbing the singing of actresses Kim Yun Jin and Kang Ye Won. Mrs. Lee would like to share her passion for singing with students aiming to succeed at school oriented activities. She is prepared to teach a variety of styles ranging from classical, jazz and pop. She bases her work on the book Sing like a Star written by vocal trainer Seth Riggs, who taught celebrities such as Michael Jackson, Natalie Cole, Jennifer Lopez, among others. She has been performed with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Prime Philharmonic Orchestra, Asia Philharmonic orchestra, Gunsan Philharmonic orchestra, and Korea National Opera. Ms. Park received her Bachelor's degree in Percussion performance from Sookmyung Women s University in Seoul, Korea. I have many years of experience in performing various percussion instruments including drum kit and I am well prepared to teach students at all levels. I love working with young musicians and we can have fun with various percussion instruments (Set Drum, Timpani, Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Cymbals, Xylophone, and Glockenspiel) while learning. Percussions Instructor: Ms. June Moon Kyung Hahn Ms. Hahn specializes in classical percussion music including marimba, vibraphone, orchestral instruments, and timpani. Students can expect to learn technical and musical theories of these instruments, along with scales, and rhythm structure. Born in California and raised in Korea, June Moon Kyung Hahn won numerous awards from Japan, France, Poland, China, and USA. At the age of ten, she became the youngest percussionist in Korea to hold a solo recital. Active in chamber music, Ms. Hahn has been invited to the Tong- Yeong International Music Festival, Perkumania in Paris, the Poland Percussion Festival in Krakow, and the Seoul International Computer Music Festival. At a young age, she was a member of a Cultural Volunteer Corps where she performed at orphanages, nursing homes, and hospitals. In 2010, Ms. Hahn and percussionist Eun Hye Kim started a percussion duo - 'Moitié,' in which they donate half of their earnings to children with special needs. Ms. Hahn studied at Seoul Arts High School and received her Bachelor of Music degree at The Juilliard School, She received a Diplôme de Perfectionnement at Conservatoire de National Regional de Paris. SWEP PARENT AGREEMENT- MUSIC LESSONS As a parent/guardian of Seoul Foreign School (SFS), when signing my child up for individual music lessons with an SFS SWEP instructor, I agree to comply with the following terms and conditions. 1. The parent/guardian will pay, in advance, a nonrefundable fee directly to the music instructor, at the beginning of each month by either cash or bank transfer. 2. Returning music students must also pay a non-refundable one month in advance fee directly to their instructor on the day of signup to secure their place for the new semester. 3. If the child or parent/guardian decides to discontinue or terminate lessons, he / she must inform the instructor and SWEP Coordinator, in written form, 14 days in advance, in order to allow enough time for that instructor to find a replacement. 4. Once the parent/guardian agrees to a day and time for a music lesson this must be adhered to. The instructor cannot be expected to change the days of lesson times on an ad hoc basis. 5. If your child is unable to attend a lesson for any reason, the parent/guardian must inform the instructor. However, the instructor is not obliged to refund money or to reschedule the missed lesson. 6. If the instructor has to cancel a lesson, he / she will notify the student s parent/guardian and the SWEP Coordinator as soon as possible. The instructor will try to reschedule the class but if this is not possible he / she is obliged to refund the money for that class. 7. Private music lessons for beginner and intermediate students at the elementary and middle school level must be charged at the fee scale set by SFS. These fixed prices are: 55,000 won for 60 minutes, 40,000 won for 45 minutes, and 30,000 won for 30 minutes. For advanced students in the middle and high school music instructors are able to set their own fee scale. 8. The class will begin and end promptly at the times agreed upon by the instructor and SWEP Coordinator. In all cases, the instructor and student(s) will leave the school premises no later than 6:00 p.m. 9. The instructor will not allow students to remain in the facility space unattended, especially at the conclusion of the class while the student(s) are waiting to be picked up. 10. In the event that a student walks homes after the end of a class without a parent/guardian, the instructor will require a note from the parent/guardian which will be kept on file. 11. If a parent/guardian is repeatedly late in picking up his or her child, then the instructor will contact the SWEP Coordinator. SFS will not be responsible for the supervision of students after normal SFS school hours. 12. If students are sent home early due to weather conditions, the SWEP Coordinator will attempt to notify the instructor as soon as possible so that they may contact the parent(s) and cancel the lesson. 13. In the case of any misunderstandings or queries, the parent should first contact the child s music instructor. If not resolved, the SWEP Coordinator has the right to intervene until a satisfactory resolution is reached. 14.
