California Summer Music (CSM) is a thriving environment for young performers and composers to learn, grow, and achieve their goals through the unique experience of music making. Every summer, we provide each emerging artist highly individualized, quality musical training and mentoring with CSM faculty and internationally renowned guest artists. Our Mission The mission of California Summer Music is to provide a focused and professionally attuned environment for young musicians to explore and take joy in the creation, expression, and connections that classical music, as a living art, provides. Our artistic faculty works closely with each student to achieve not just musical mastery but strong communication skills and an appreciation of the role that art can play in their lives and in society in general. Our goal is to enrich students with new music, new friends and new insights in an unsurpassed environment.

California Summer Music offers violinists, violists, cellists, pianists, and composers a rich musical environment with personal attention, a myriad of performance opportunities, daily chamber music coaching and composer seminar and plentiful hours of private instruction. Our world-class faculty and guest artists serve as artistic mentors, fine-tuning performances and compositions. Emerging young artists, guest artists, and our faculty spend hours exploring music together, creating a supportive artistic community that nurtures musical growth.

CSM s Performance Program offers a rich, multifaceted musical experience with equal emphasis on solo playing and chamber music for sixty string players and pianists ranging in age from Individual attention is a hallmark of CSM; students have daily chamber music coachings, private lessons, ample practice time, and hands-on resident faculty members, encouraging growth both technically and musically. Each musician is expected to learn his or her individual part in advance.through CSM s concerts, studio classes and public master classes, students receive both performance opportunities and insights into the intricacies of each instrument. The culmination of the Performance Program is a six-concert chamber music celebration, in which each group performs their complete chamber work. High quality audio and video recordings are made from each performance. Participants in the program also have the unique opportunity to work in collaboration with the Composition Program participants to premiere their new works.

Composition Program This year we have almost all newcomers, which is great. It s good to have fresh perspectives in the group discussions, it challenges us as artists to defend our musical philosophies. -Composition Student Limited to ten participants, CSM s Composition Program carefully tailors instruction for each young composer and covers all stages of the compositional process: sketching, planning and development of musical ideas, score and parts preparation, rehearsal, and performance. In addition to approximately nine one-hour private lessons for each participant, our composition students attend a daily group class, in which composers explore and discuss compositions from a variety July 16, 2014 Guest Composer, Louis Karchin with CSM Quartet. of genres, consider problems they encounter in the preparation of their works, and review scores from a composer s viewpoint. Emphasis is placed on the production of a score that accurately communicates the composer s intentions. The program culminates in premieres of the newly written works by players from the Performance Program. The program also features a guest composer residency. CSM has welcomed composers such as John Corigliano, Lowell LIebermann, Christopher Theofanidis, Chen Yi, Paul Moravec, Bright Sheng, George Tsontakis, Gabriela Lena Frank, and Ellen Taaffee Zwilich.

Outreach Programs Living Music Program: California Summer Music's Living Music program extends to the local community, bringing the benefits of live classical music to listeners, old and new. The Living Music provides audiences live performances in an open and interactive environment. Retirement Communities We are delighted to bring a variety of performances by young artists to communities with people who are unable to attend concerts. Our students learn to be ambassadors for classical music and see firsthand the joy music can bring to people of all ages.
