Reboot, reset, erase, power off, restore - what's the difference? Sleeping The ipad sleeps to conserve your battery. This is the normal way to end your ipad session. Everything on the ipad is functioning welll, there are no problems, but you just want to stop for the day. This is the sleep button on your ipad. You could also call it the On / Off button. If there is any inactivity for some time - and this can be set from 2 minutes to Never, the ipad will drop off to sleep. In effect, the ipad has gone into stand-by mode. You can also use this same button to wake it up. If you have an ipad case with smart cover technology, simply close it. This will put the ipad to sleep. Opening the cover will wake it. Changing the Sleep settings My sleep settings are set at 5 minutes. If you choose Never, your IPad will never sleep and your battery will drain more quickly. Waking up the ipad If your ipad has gone to sleep / in standby mode or you have turned it off by pressing this switch, press the same button to turn it back on. Your ipad will turn on almost instantly and you have access to all functions and services immediately. Contrast this with powering off your ipad. The Lock Screen After the ipad is woken up, you will see the Lock Screen. You can allocate whatever image you like to this screen. Mine is the Windows 'Blue Screen of Death'. simply Slide to Unlock. If you don't do it quickly, the ipad will go back to sleep. To change your wallpaper - home screen and lock screen, go to Settings, Brightness & Wallpaper. Close down a running app Wehn you close an app, it still remains in the background. Too many apps running in the background may slow down the ipad or cause other things to run more sluggishly. background. Open the Multitasking Bar - either double tap on the Home button or swipe up with 4 fingers (if you have Multitasking gestures turned on. Hold down any app until they all start wiggling. You can locate the offending app by swiping left or right until you find it. Kill it from active memory by tapping the red circle. This will not delete the app from the ipad - merely from running in the basckground. It will still work when you open it again and no data or settings will be lost. Turn off the ipad - Power off Hold the Sleep / Wake down until this screen comes up. Slide to Power off. This will restart your ipad. It is not necessary to use this method unless you may be having a problem with a misbehaving app, you may not be able to quit an app, or something else is not functioning as it should. Turning off the ipad will reboot it and most likely fix these problems. For everything else, just let the ipad put itself to sleep. (See the step above). Your ipad uses very little power when asleep. So I suggest you put your ipad to sleep instead of turning it off. Hard Reset - Reboot As with many electronic devices that sport an operating system, there might come a time when your apps just don't work the way they should or your ipad simply freezes or has become sluggish. In most cases, a "hard reset" fixes most issues. Resetting an ipad just means that your data and settings will be refreshed, which helps to reset buggy apps among other things. Basically, it s like the restart function on your computer. To do a hard reset, just hold the "Sleep/Wake" button on the upper right of your ipad along with the circular "Home" button on the lower middle part of the device's bezel. After 10 seconds, you should see the Apple logo. That's the sign that you've successfully pulled off a hard reset with your ipad. Just keep holding the two button until you see the Apple logo. You would like an automatic backup solution to use in conjunction with itunes Backup itunes Backup itunes Backup is traditionally how users have backed up their ios devices, and it continues to serve the needs of many users. itunes Backup is best for you if: You frequently use the computer that hosts your itunes Backups. You don't have an icloud account or don't want to use icloud. The photos and videos saved in your device s Camera Roll regularly exceed 1 GB in size or you tend to have very large backups. You want on-site and networked backups. Backing up using itunes If you need to reset your ipad to factory defaults, all your data, settings and apps will be deleted. Once the ipad is reset and you turn it on, all you will see is the ipad in its original state - the day you brought it home. It is very important to have a backup of your data and settings BEFORE resetting it. In itunes, connect your ipad to your computer and select your ipad in the Devices tab of itunes. 1. Automatically back up. Select the method you want for your back up to occur automatically. Select itunes if you have a computer. The back up is free and and storage space is only limited by the amount of hard drive space. Backups occur automatically whenever you sync your ipad to the computer. See ipad Beginners: the ipad and itunes. If you select icloud to do your backup, you will need to pay for the additional storage as only 5Gb is free. 2. To back up manually, you select: Back up Now. With this method, you have to remember to connect your ipad to your computer, open itunes, select your ipad and then press the button: Back up Now. for me, this is too easy to forget and dangerous. 3. To restore a backup. This will use the last available backup and restore your settings, bookmarks, contacts, calendars. An important thing to know about the itunes option, though, is that it doesn't backup your ipad's apps and music. Those are stored in your itunes library and need to be backed up as part of your computer backup or using icloud (more on that in a minute). Given that, it's a good idea to ensure that you're employing some other kind of backup, whether it's an external hard drive or web-based automatic backup services. If you have to restore your ipad from backup, it would be too bad to lose your music because you didn't back it up. Using icloud Backup doesn't disable itunes Backup completely, it just turns off Automatic Backups via itunes. You can trigger a manual itunes Backup yourself whenever you want to create a new one. Backing up your ipad with icloud Backup Mail, contacts, Calendars etc automatically to icloud. tunr them on. To replace an itunes backup with icloud, select: Storage and Backup. icloud Backup Turn icloud Backup ON. You will get a warning message that your computer will no longer backup automatically whever it is synced with itunes on the computer. Like itunes, the icloud backup doesn't cover apps or music. For apps, this is easily solved: you can redownload any of your apps for free using icloud. Restoring the ipad to its Factory Defaults Why would you need to restore? If you are planning on selling your ipad, or even giving it to a family member, you will want to reset the ipad to the factory default settings. This will wipe your ipad, erasing the settings and data, and returning it to the exact state as when you first opened the box. By wiping the ipad, you allow it to be set up properly by the new owner. and your personal information by making sure all of the settings and data are erased from the ipad. There are two ways to do this. One way is while the ipad is connected to itunes on a computer. In the summary pane in itunes, select: Restore ipad. Reset your ipad to factory settings using the ipad In Settings, select Settings, General, Reset. There are a number of settings that you can reset in this section. To reset the ipad, select: Erase all content and settings. This option protects you by making sure all data is off the ipad, which includes information for your itunes account Restoring your data after a reset with itunes If you use itunes to reset your ipad to factory defaults, this is the warning message you will get before proceeding with the reset. If you have been using itunes, you should have backups. This happens automatically. Once the reset is complete, you can restore your data from the last backup.
