Faculty of Health Sciences Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion The Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion has a comprehensive program that instructs students in the fundamentals of modern medicine alongside the study of acupuncture and moxibustion, which embraces the knowledge and techniques of traditional Eastern medicine. The department fosters advanced clinical skills and research-oriented thinking. During the four-year program, we cultivate the wide-ranging communications skills required of medical professionals. Students also gain clinical skills during hands-on training at the affiliated acupuncture and moxibustion center and medical clinic. We expect our graduates to not only enter the fields of acupuncture and moxibustion, but also to be active in a wide range of fields such as athletic training and public welfare. Department of Judo Therapy Judo therapy is a branch of Japanese traditional medicine with a history of about 1,300 years, having been developed as a mean of treating injuries associated with judo. The techniques that judo therapy practitioners use to treat bone fracture, joint dislocation, joint sprain and muscular bruise have been steadily passed down through Japanese history. Judo therapy is similar to orthopedics in some respects, but does not employ surgery or drugs. Students in this department learn these traditions and techniques and examine them from a scientific viewpoint. The department produces medical professionals who are highly educated and compassionate with a strong ethical sense. Graduates have many paths open to them in the medical, healthcare, social welfare and sports fields, such as opening a judo therapy clinic and working as an athletic trainer or healthcare service provider. They can also enter the field of research. Diploma Policy A degree is granted to students in the Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion who complete the required credits and acquire the following skills and capacities: A broad understanding of nature, society and culture and the basic knowledge, technical skills and attitude necessary for utilizing information, communicating and understanding other cultures. The necessary knowledge to pass the national examination to become a licensed acupuncture and moxibustion practitioner with the basic skills such as logical thinking, creative thinking and lifelong learning that will allow them to become competent practitioners of acupuncture and moxibustion who actively contribute to society. A rich sense of humanity and a strong ethical sense, both as members of society and as medical professionals with a broad perspective that provides the flexibility to deal appropriately with any situation whether serving as a team leader or a team member. The combined knowledge and technical expertise to practice acupuncture and moxibustion therapy as one segment of modern medicine in the areas of healthcare, medical treatment and public welfare. Faculty of Health Sciences Elective Education Programs Students in the Faculty of Health Sciences can take two elective programs: 1) the Athletic Training Education Program 2) the Health Fitness Instructor Education Program. Students can acquire the necessary knowledge and skills in exercise sciences and sports medicine through these programs. Athletic Training Education Program The Athletic Training Education Program s aim is to prepare each student to become a certified athletic trainer who can function as an integral member of the health care team in high schools, colleges and universities, professional sports, sports medicine clinics and other health care settings. Students in this program study the concepts and skills to support athletes. The Athletic Training Education Program is accredited by the Japan Sports Association (JASA). Upon completion of the program the student is eligible to take the JASA certification examination to become a JASA certified athletic trainer (JASA-AT). Health Fitness Instructor Education Program The Health Fitness Instructor Education Program is designed to prepare students to lead, instruct and motivate individuals or groups in exercise activities to promote healthy lifestyle. Upon completion of the program, the student is eligible to take the Health and Fitness Instructor certification examination to become a Japan Health Promotion and Fitness Foundation certified Health Fitness Instructor. Diploma Policy A degree is granted to students in the Department of Judo Therapy who complete the required credits and acquire the following skills and capacities: The necessary knowledge and technical expertise to practice judo therapy Cultural refinement and the ethical values of medical professionals The mindset and communications skills of global citizens A scientific thought process Learning Program (Boston, MA, U.S.A.) We have invited Professor of Medicine Ted J. Kaptchuk and Associate Professor of Psychiatry Jian Kong of Harvard Medical School the world s leading experts in placebo, pain and acupuncture research to serve as guest professors. In pursuit of the university s educational goal of producing capable and talented individuals who have a strong global perspective, we have created an overseas learning program in Boston, Massachusetts. The program includes participation in classes at the New England School of Acupuncture the oldest graduate school of acupuncture and moxibustion in the United States as well as tours of Harvard University, one of the world s premier education and research institutions, and attending lectures on the latest studies of Professor Ted J. Learning program in Mongolia Teaching staff and students in the Department of Judo Therapy participate in a learning program in Mongolia, where Japan s judo therapy techniques have taken root and are spreading and developing. Participation in Mongolian academic conferences and interactions with the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences provides food for thought in many areas, such as the importance of communications skills and the proper attitude regarding the pursuit of medicine.
