2 2 University of Western States History of Excellence As the second oldest chiropractic educational program in the world, the University of Western States (UWS) has continually been a leader in integrating health and science. Today, UWS patient-centered health care programs are based on more than a century of research to provide the knowledge and skills students need to begin a career as a successful health care professional. our Program In 2006, UWS launched the first massage therapy program on the Portland campus, and expanded to the Chemeketa Community College Salem campus in Massage therapy students continue to excel and meet the demands of the growing job market and play an integral part in the health care field. 3 our program Massage Therapy The massage therapy curriculum at UWS offers a well-rounded foundation so graduates 2009 & 2010 Exam Outcomes can practice successfully in a variety of settings, from chair massage to spas, as well as working with complex conditions. Small class sizes allow for personalized instruction from National Oregon UWS Exam Pass Rate Pass Rate Pass Rate faculty who teach a compassionate approach to helping others through touch. Accreditation The massage therapy program is the only university-based massage program in Oregon. The Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities accredits UWS, which means credits completed at UWS may transfer to other colleges and universities. The Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation accredits the massage therapy program. Program Overview The program is structured so students learn a strong foundation in the human body and basic massage strokes before moving on to more specialized training to work with injuries, illness and chronic conditions. Students become skilled massage practitioners because of the sound foundation in science and experience in realworld care emphasized throughout the curriculum. UWS combines the art and science of massage by educating students through lecture and lab settings and real-world experience. I was fascinated by the idea that massage therapy could relieve pain. Passion: pain relief, sports injury rehabilitation Now: runs her own practice that specializes in pain relief, sports injury prevention and rehabilitation curriculum

5 excellence Learning Resources Students learn best by doing and UWS offers many ways to do. Participating in gross anatomy labs allows massage students to study muscles in prosection on cadavers, providing them with in-depth study of anatomy that lectures or textbooks cannot match. Students also gain knowledge through hands-on classes and a number of kinesthetic learning opportunities such as outlining and tracing muscles on fellow students, building muscular structures on model skeletons and watching in-depth videos on massage techniques. The university takes pride in its award-winning anatomical science lab, integrated health care clinics and comprehensive university library. UWS students also have access to the libraries at Oregon Health & Science University, National College of Natural Medicine and Oregon College of Oriental Medicine. Hands-On Hands-on experience is an integral part of the massage curriculum. Students practice massage skills in supervised classes and clinic settings. Clinic rotations begin in the second quarter to provide massage students with real-world experiences as soon as possible. Outside of class, students have opportunities to practice skills through case studies, outreach events and class assignments. UWS students provide massage services throughout the Portland and surrounding areas at events such as the Association of Volleyball Professionals tournaments in Seaside, the Hood to Coast Relay and Doernbecher Children s Hospital. The UWS Model Beginning in the second quarter, you will practice massage in a UWS clinic under supervision. Work with a variety of patients in various settings: sports massage massage for cancer patients geriatric massage disadvantaged/homeless youth integrated health centers chiropractic clinics (Opportunities vary by term) University of Western States 5

6 6 University of Western States Tutoring Services The office of student services ensures students have all the tools to excel in the massage program. Student tutors and mentors provide extra support outside the classroom at no cost and trained counselors are available weekly to meet personal counseling needs. Career Services UWS is committed to providing students with tools to succeed after graduation, including business skills and networking connections. The office of career services connects students to experienced physician mentors and hosts business and professional development workshops for students and alumni. Alumni Relations Once graduated, UWS stays connected and keeps alumni informed of what s happening at the university, in the profession and with classmates through the intouch newsletter, social media, homecoming alumni reunions and other campus or online events. Continuing Education The university s continuing education division offers an ever-changing selection of diverse, high-quality continuing education programs for massage therapists for annual license renewal after graduation. 7 financial aid FINANCIAL AID The typical financial aid package for massage therapy students is a mixture of loans and grants. Grants don t have to be repaid, while loans do. UWS encourages mindful borrowing. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) available online at to determine eligibility and use the school code to have the necessary information sent to UWS. SCHOLARSHIPS All UWS students are encouraged to seek outside scholarships or apply for school sponsored scholarships. JOB PLACEMENT RATE As of January 2013, 89.5% of graduates who responded to a recent alumni survey from the office of career services indicated that they are currently employed in the massage therapy field.
