TUTTI - Systematic Product Concept Generation A Joint Effort by: HUT Helsinki University of Technology, Department of Machine Design ÅA - Åbo Akademi University, IAMSR Institute for Advanced Management Systems Research UIAH University of Industrial Arts Helsinki, Department of Industrial Design Year 2020 Product concepts for different futures

An initiative in the Masina technology programme 2002 2007 coordinated by National Technology Agency - TEKES Tekes, the National Technology Agency is the main public financing and expert organization for research and technological development in Finland. Tekes has a budget of 380 million euros, a source of funding for 2000 projects annually. MASINA is a national technology programme that advances the Finnish Mechanical Engineering's planning and research to answer to the challenges of the future. The Tutti research project funded by Tekes has started in August 2002 and continues until August 2004.

Aims of Tutti To produce (alternative) future scenarios To produce future product concept models and visualisations based on the scenarios To further develop methodologies associated with scenario and product concept generation To introduce (industrial) product development and associated research projects Schedule year I: scenario generation year II: product concept generation

Themes of Special Interest short distance mobility within an urban environment everyday user s intimate technology personal assistants leisure, entertainment wood processing industry machines distributed energy production and storage

Process Part 1: Future anticipation Scenario study Technology study Definition of the line of the business and actor Definition of characteristics of scenarios Futures table method Creation of scenarios The extension of future table Business-related scenarios Part 2: Concept development Idea generation Concept draft generation Design concept generation, technology and market study Future product concept presentation

Part 1: Future anticipation Scenario study Main trends, existing scenarios Shell, CIA, WBCSD:n (World Business Council for Sustainable Development) Wide range of scenarios, different emphasis Technology study Technology foresights, technology road maps, existing technology studies, scientific publications and news papers, patents, military and space research Key technologies should be defined

Part 1: Future anticipation Definition of the line of the business and actor In which business the company is now and in which business it may be in the future Definition of characteristics of scenarios The driving forces and factors in the operating environment are mapped by PESTE-analysis Also the quiet tacit knowledge within an organisation According to driving forces and existing scenarios it is possible to outline the characteristics of scenarios Futures table method Tables are created by listing important factors of the future PESTE-classification Global, block, industry -levels Alternative future paths Creation of scenarios Paths can be converted to textual presentations

Selected product concept groups (Industrial)robotics in every scenario Technology platform remain, market/business change Short distance mobility in every scenario Technology platform vary, market/business remain Best concepts, six pieces random market and technology

Guard robot, Robotics group, Sabotage-scenario mobile, flying robot (cf. beetle, dragonfly) watch e.g. the house other functions: take fotos/video, scan the environment (air, objects etc.) and people (vital functions)

Black & Decker vs. 2020, Robotics group, USA led Big Mac scenario Record player-sized industrial robot for domestic use Body, far reaching arm and a changeable magazine for different tools From kitchen to gardening, mainly used in garage as a modern power tool. It learns tasks by mimicking and can repeat them faster than human

Stand up car, short distance mobility group, Sabotage-scenario A safe option for pedestrians Works as an extension of ones domestic space by being able to park alongside corridors and living rooms if needed Protects the owner from pollution, street violence, and is fully car theft proof After use it sits down on its fender edge and locks down. The cart uses a spindle type of a mechanism, which enables tilting and turning into various directions Wheels work with individual electric motors

Shopping-Kart, short distance mobility group, USA led Big Mac scenario Passenger transportation system for shopping centers Steered by central traffic control system Carts are ordered to the car park, customers scan their credit cards and decide where to go or accept the plan that the cart suggests
